Some people like myself just enjoy listening to songs and it is no big deal where the artist or group started their musical careers. Other people may really like to keep track of such information, if for nothing other than a music trivia night. I just got to thinking about some bands and where they might have come from. See what you think. This could be a correct the errors thread, or just a have fun first thing that comes to mind thread.

If the band Chicago originated in Chicago, and Boston in Boston... does that mean the band Glass Tiger originated in a Canadian gift shop? Those little glass figurines? Level 42 would have started out playing Jenga somewhere? Journey- on some long trip. Asia needed the whole continent. The Police were off-duty. Firehouse had short practices. Who sang Electric Blue? Electricians? Sting- the Police were in on it for a while. The Human League- bowling fanatics. Men at Work - were not really. Men Without Hats- bad news for clothiers.

Now, granted, a lot of that is not serious at all. See where it takes you. Let's just keep it within the TOS. Enjoy!

Well lets see, Glass Tiger was indeed from Canada and while Asia was from England, their accents were so thick when they spoke that they may as well been from Asia anyway.

Did Falco used to work at a toy factory?

Was ABBA a Christian band?

Not to spoil the goofiness of this thread but sometimes knowing where a band is from can hep with finding meaning in lyrics. Consider the following line from a love song:

In the heart of winter the comfort of the sun

That line gives me goosebumps. That is primarily because I know that the band who performs that song is from Finland (Sentenced, name of the song is "You Are the One"). He understands and profoundly appreciates the comfort of the sun in contrast to their winters. If the line was delivered by a band that hails from Florida I wouldn't give it a second thought.

As far as the OP goes while I don't know how the name Blue Oyster Cult tells us where they are from (Long Island I believe) it does tell us that they had the same idea L. Ron Hubbard had, to start their own religion. But alas, they found that music is not as effective in spreading dogma as books. So they were left with one major hit (Don't Fear the Reaper) and a decent rep as album oriented rockers. Not bad but certainly not the ego trip of leading everyone in a chant of "oyster" while decked out in blue robes.

I do see two different ways this thread can go, both on my account. It'd probably be more intriguing to take a wild guess at where (geographically) a band originated from... and then come back and see if anyone had corrected one's guesses, or to fix them yourself. If its a US band, not to say simply US, but if it is there, what state. Overseas, what province, or some such.

The Who - Newark New Jersey, home of the spotted owl club
Herman's Hermits - somewhere in New England, USA... Henry the 8th spoof
When in Rome - Greece
Def Leppard - Columbia, S America
The Chieftians - NY, NY

someone go after three of those and let me know how much time is spent... thanks. Humble, you'll probably need all of 5 minutes.

Ok, so this is more of a guess of where a band might be from then and not what a bands name might mean?

Ok, Dexies Midnite Runners, from Mississippi?

A Flock of Seagulls from either New England or California?

One Republic from Massachusetts?

Newsboys from either New York or Washington DC?

It's hard to find a website that tells where bands originated. You would have to go to Wiki. and seek out individually. At least that's what I would have to do or go to their MySpace. Some people just know trivia like that. If someone knows of a website that you can get this info. please share cuz' I would be interested.

I know that the op wasn't asking this but, this website tells how the names of bands originated, for those who are interested.

so if I'm next in line, I say I know the Who didn't originate in New Jersey! I Yahoo the Who, and ... go to the official website. Hmm... looking for history section... right there. So the Who originated in London. Interesting that their name was changed, then changed back to the Who again.

Herman's Hermits - Manchester, England

When In Rome - also Manchester, England

Def Leppard - Sheffield, UK

The Chieftians - Ireland

Basically, everybody think up some 'possible' places where groups started, and then someone else sleuth them to see if they are being legit or not. To keep things moving, how about just proposing three, with one being correct at the start. See if the avid music listener can pick out the two 'fakes' without surfing the one that is right. That means Giggles can drop one of Humble's and just surf the net for three of the bands mentioned. Mike, you do the same on Johnfortean's list. Then we'll see if this is worth keeping up or not.

I did find it interesting to learn that about the Who's name changing.

Alrighty... round three!

Rufus,
Hang in there, my friend. You were the inspiration to keep this thread going. If this works, then John14 will set up a quiz for you.

Van Halen were a bunch of hitch-hikers from CA.
The Cars were spawned by LA traffic!
Metallica came from ex-Pittsburgh steel workers.
Megadeth were ex-grave diggers at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary.
New Order were "inspired" to form in England by the speech by GHW Bush.
