hi my name is candace and i am a disciple. I have had a strong conviction about not smoking/drinking pretty much my whole life but I have a best friend who used to study the bible but turned away from God, and she smokes marijuana everyday. What scriptures could I show her to show what she is doing is not good for her spiritually? I'm thinking that she is idolizing that drug. But I would like to know for anyone who ask me in the future so I am more prepared.

where I live, that would be against the law in a 'go to jail' sort of way.

except for those who are in denial, marijuana is a mood altering drug.

Sober: not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

so I did a search on the word sober and came up with these verses:

1Pe 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
--1Pe 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober .....
--2Ti 4:5 But you, be sober in all things.....
--1Th 5:8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober.....
--1Co 15:34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning.....

--Gal 5:19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: .................drunkeness.................

1Co 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither ...........................
1Co 6:10 ................ nor drunkards, ............... will inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

The Greek word "pharmakia" literally means "drugs", and appears five times in the New Testament: in Gal 5:20, Rev 9:21, 18:23, 21:8, and 22:15. "Pharmakia" is translated into our English Bible as either "witchcraft" or "sorceries". We also get our English word "pharmacy" from the Greek word "pharmakia".

This is good info, Makarizo.

Candypr, your friend has a deeper problem than drugs. She used to walk with the Lord and now she has turned away to something else, and something else in God's place is idolatry. God takes this seriously. It's a spiritual battle, and your friend is losing. Pray like crazy for her. You might call the Al-Anon office and see what advice they can give you. Does her pastor know? We pray for people like this publically in church.

When people get sucked into drugs, usually telling them they have a problem is just brushed off. Is her family willing to do an intervention, and put her into rehab? Her parents may be willing to get the police involved, and it could be the kindest thing.

I am praying for you today, that God will give you wisdom and your friend deliverence. (((Hugs)))

Candace, I will give you some scriptures to show your friend, and to help others. Please, be sure "A friend loves at all times," so don't give up praying for your friend if she turns away from you. You might find out if your church, or one near you has a "Celebrate Recovery." This is an awesome Christ centered program that could help her re-focus her life on Jesus, and put away the illegal habit for good.
You can do a google search to find more info. on it.

I agree with the other posters here. I hope you do, too.

Here are some scriptures:

Titus 2:11:12
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say
"NO" to ungodliness and worldy passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly
lives in this present age.

1 Peter 1:13
Prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace
to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1 Peter 5:8
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.

1 Corinthians 6:19
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you
have received from God? You are not your own. You wre bought with a price. There-
fore honor God with your body.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
(She can break the drug habit through Christ).

Father God, Thank you for Candace, that she hurts for her friend, enough to ask how she can help her and others through your living Word. Lord Jesus, you are enough. We don't need anyone or anything but you in our lives. May Candace be blessed with your wisdom and words to help her friend get back to a right relationship with you. Help them both see that you alone are a God of compassion and forgiveness, having given your Son for our sins and a promise of new life for those who believe...in Jesus name.

Your friend has a bigger problem than smoking marijuana. If she is saved she probably doesn't understand the fullness of the Gospel and her identity in Christ. If she is not saved, simply quitting smoking isn't going to do anything for her spiritual health. She is dead in sin and needs the saving life of Christ. I wouldn't focus too much on the marijuana as I would those two issues. As she matures in the faith or accepts Christ as her savior things like smoking will fall away over time as she realizes they are not representative of who she is as a child of God. She will begin to realize that she is the temple of God and if she wouldn't smoke marijuana in a church building why do it to her physical body? Hope this helps.

Grace and Peace

Amen GraceBro...you're right on with your advice. What the friend should or shouldn't do according to the bible is meaningless if they don't know Christ.

Hello candypr15

I think your friend has an addiction to the drug she is smoking. She certainly needs deliverance but she will have to see the necessity of that herself. You might consider Romans 8.

I've had people ask me if smoking anything will keep them out of heaven. I tell them, I'm not sure but in all the Bible I don't see that there will be any smoke in heaven. So, I assume one will have to "snuff out" if they plan to stay there.
