The psalms represent honest expressions of what we experience. You will find every emotion, every feeling, expressed throughout the psalms. God desires that kind of honesty from us. So when the psalmist cries out for the killing of the enemy, what is he saying? He is agreeing with God that God IS going to put an end to all evil. The evil is outside us. The evil is within us. And someday it is all going to be done away with. So praise the Lord when you read verses like that and say thank You, Lord, that one day Your will WILL be done on earth as it is in heaven! Deliver me from evil, the evil within me and the evil of others! And help those who are Yours, Lord, to see the evil that they are doing, they are a part of. And search MY heart, O Lord, and show me MY wicked ways so that I can repent and be led in Your ways, paths of righteousness. If you have any more questions, just ask. LL

I have a suggestion. On the Internet, you can find many lists for reading the Bible chronoligically. Find one, then read the Scriptures that are about David. By doing this, while all of the Psalms are not written by David, many of them are, and you will see what he was going through and how they relate to those things, the people, his life. That way, you will understand the Psalms much better.

Good advice so far nlp. When you read the impreccatory Psalms (eg Psalm 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 109, 137 and 139), take account of what David was going through. He had been annointed, but could not understand why he was being pursued. Note, however, that although he appears to be calling a curse upon his enemies, he ended his Psalms by praising and trusting God: I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high. And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long. but I will trust in thee. Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy. So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will show forth thy praise to all generations. I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. However, note that he did not say what HE would do to his pursuers. He was handing them over to God to deal with, and considered that the actions of his pursuers were sins against a Holy and Just God, rather than against himself. Paul had a similar approach: 1 Cor 16:22 If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha. (The NIV translates "If anyone does not love the Lord--a curse be on him. Come, O Lord!) 2 Tim 4:14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: (The NIV translates "Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done."

SinnerSaved got it right, and I'm surprised more churches don't teach impreccatory prayers. It's calling on God to bring judgement and consequences on those who are living godless and hurtful to others, which God says He'll do anyway. Scripture tells us that vengence is God's and He will repay, so it's kind of reminding Him about that (which is OK) and saying we won't do that because it's God's job, not ours.
