in the Orthodox Faith the Holy Spirit precedes from the Father in the Protestant faith the Holy Spirit precedes from Christ

both Protestants believe that Christ precedes from God so there is no debate there :)

so my question is does it matter and if you ever met an Orthodox would you be willing to agree to dissagree?

It doesn't matter to me and I would agree to disagree...had lots of practice on these forums doing that.

I've been a believer for nearly 42 years and I've never heard of the Holy Spirit proceeding (or preceding) from either the Father or the Son. The Holy Spirit, unless my memory fails me again, is separate from but unified with the Father & Son.

Can you explain what you mean by this term "preceding"?

If two people never come to agree, they pretty much have to agree not to agree, right? Unless one decides to bump off the other, maybe. Anyhoo, I'll never be able to agree with the EOC view of deification, sorry. But I'll agree not to agree with you if you like. I suppose when the Great Schism took place over the filioque, the East and the West decided not to agree to disagree, so they excommunicated each other.

Euty,
"Proceed" is the Early Church Father's term for what Jesus calls "send". Jesus told his Apostles he would "send" the Holy Spirit. EOC says Jesus didn't send the Spirit, the Father did. The formula, which the EOC made a little too crisp for our human lack of understanding, is that the distinctions between the Persons of the Trinity are formulated that the Father eternal begets the Son and the Holy spirit eternally proceeds from the Father, etc. In the Nicene Creed, the Western Church uses the phrase "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son." The part I underlined is called the filioque. The Eastern Church struck that phrase from the creed. The rest is history.

Thanks, HardKnox!

It's a good day when I learn something new that is worthwhile.

Frankly, it just makes me scratch my head and go..hmmmmmmmmm....do we not have bigger issues to disagree over? I don't understand why this is important enough to argue about.

On this side of heaven we know-in-part. Some theological issues tend to sound like the old discussion of how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. At least now I know what a filique is.

For me Adonai's Spirit is Adonai. As my spirit is me. When my spirit leaves, that which remain is not me.
