I've been having pain on the lower left side of my abdomen for a few months and I suspected it was something involving my ovary. Had it ultrasounded and I have a cyst. From what I have read they are quite common and usually nothing serious. However, have any of you any tips on how to manage the pain? Yesterday I took two aleve and gobs of tylenol to no avail. Do I just have to deal with the pain?
Also, the pain is not just midcycle when I should be ovulating.

what type of cyst did they say it was? You can have cysts for various reasons, and there are more than 1 type of cyst.
Generally speaking, I've not found much to be helpful with pain when I've had a cyst. Thankfully my pain is not terrible horrible pain, just noticeable... so I just deal with it.

Poly-something. They didn't give me much information and I am not too pleased with that. I was ultrasounded and the tech said sometimes we just form these cysts and they go away. Then as I was leaving I passed my midwife in the hall and she said, "Oh that was just a poly-whatever cyst. I noted it in your chart." And she hurried off.
I did some reading up online and don't feel much more informed. Some days I have no pain and some days it is mild. But like yesterday it hurt a great deal and did so all day long.

I found ibuprofen (Advil) combined with acetaminophen (Tylenol) helped about the best. But...in reality, there isn't a lot that can be done. Did the technician or doctor happen to mention a size of the cyst? Sometimes they are large enough (or enough of them) that surgical removal is your best option. (((hugs))) and prayers because they definitely do hurt!!

I have no ideas on meds, none have worked for me, but taking slow, not too deep breaths at least keeps me from crying. Then again, mine just ache usually and go to sharp pains for only 5 minutes at a time or so. I've heard eating more fiber is supposed to help but can't remember why. Hope something helps you, and the whole "oh cysts are usual, they don't bother you that much" thing from doctors drives me crazy too.

hmm... by definition "poly" means "many" and so to have just one cyst, but to have it called "poly_____" that seems odd.
If you want to know more, you could always call and ask them specifically what it was, and just tell them that you wanted to look it up, but you couldn't remember the name.
My doctor's office is very accomodating if I do something like this. =)
I currently have a cyst, and they told me what type of cyst, and I have looked it up. They gave me birth control pills... and said, there are 2 schools of thought... (1) is that it will do nothing (2) is that it will keep it from growing larger because the ovaries aren't 'allowed' to do much while on the pill.
I go back in a week for a follow-up ultrasound, and to talk to the doctor.
Did they tell you when you should come back to have it checked again?

Yeah. I thought that was odd too since poly means many and I only had one cyst. My family doctor said I really should call my ob/gyn and get some info as well as let them know that I am fairly uncomfortable.
I'm trying to decide if I'd want to try the pill. I just don't feel 100% comfortable with it right now.
Oh and they said nothing about rechecking it which concerned me some.

Poly could also mean that they saw one cyst with more than one segment. The large growth I had on my ovary was like that, with some segments solid, some clear fluid, and some bloody fluid. 
When does your pain start and when does it end...generally? I'd keep a log of that and also somehow note the intensity each day, so you have something to look back on if/when you go back to the doctor.
I would also hesitate to use the bc pills. IMO/E, in a situation like this, they can mask the problem without fixing it. With my first "issue" like this, we waited a few months to see what the growth would do. It grew to the size of a pineapple before it was removed, and that ovary along with a bunch of endometriosis, which isn't seen by ultrasound.
Tylenol is useless for this kind of pain. You need an anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen. You can take 800 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours (the rule is no more than 100 mg/hr) or 600 mg every 6 hours. I never tried Aleve, but I don't think it's really best for that kind of pain either.

This was good information. I will certainly give ibuprofen a try. The pain is the worst mid-month but occurs any time of the month.
I keep hearing about these cysts that get that big. I can't imagine. Can it be felt externally?

Yes, mine was felt externally for about two months before the surgery. By the surgery, I looked 5-6 months pregnant, and was living off narcotic pain killers.

on the other hand, I had a cyst on my fallopian tube, that was the size of a grapefruit, and I did not really have any pain, and it wasn't visible from the outside, and couldn't be felt from the outside either.
I always take ibuprofen for pain, but I find that it doesn't do much for cyst type pain. (I have a small cyst on my left ovary right now)
I only mentioned the birth control pills, because that was my doctor's recommendation.. that PLUS watching it to see what happens.

Yeah, they suggested that for me, too.
All these fruit sized cysts are freaking me out!

I had one because I hadn't had a period for a few months or I hadn't had a period for a few months cause i had one!! They couldn't decide. I tried ibuprophen and tylenol, aleve and naproxen. Sometimes one worked one day and one would work the other day. I also used those heat patches that you can stick on and they heat like a heating pad that seemed to help me when I was running around. My cyst was 5cm but not that huge of a deal. I had had one rupture on the right side and had gone to the ER with lots and lots of pain but everything looked fine and I was given an antibiotic and birth control to get rid of the other one. Went back for a cehck up three months later and it was gone. I can still feel every other month when I ovulate on the right side but its not that big a deal. Lots and lots of women have cysts and some dont even ever know about it!!! I wouldn't freak out about fruit sized cysts, your dr's are aware of yours and can monitor it.
