The Doctor Said….. You’re doing great! Well, sure. Anyone can say that, but when your doctor says, “Believe me, I don't tell all my patients this…you’re doing great”, then the words really mean something. The doctor said this to me at my July 6 appointment. He also gave the encouraging news that recent case studies have shown a way that CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) not only can be controlled but also can be brought into remission. The way is exercise. There's hope. Anyway, I wanted to share with you the encouraging news that my doctor says I’m going great. Just hearing him say these words makes me feel better. After all, he should know, right? Hmmmmm, what does God know? Maybe what He says should make us feel better. And what does He say to us about how we are doing? Well ………….. Er ......... Uugh …. Maybe we can ask Him.

Father, I want you to ….. ….do this, do that, give me this, cause that person to do that, finagle a way to bless me, etc. And when you are finished with that, I have another list of chores for you to do. Whoa! It scares me even to joke about giving a to-do list to God and to tell Him what and how to do it. Really, I don’t think of Him as being my personal Genie to whom I can give a list of wishes. But sometimes, my prayers seem to indicate that I do. For that matter, who am I to tell our Lord what to do? On the other hand, He does love us and want the best for us. So, we all know that we can bring our concerns to Him. But maybe I should not be so quick to tell Him how to answer my prayers. There’s no way that I should want Him to function at a lower level of wisdom to do what I want Him to do and how I want Him to do it. Why shouldn’t I leave it to Him? That is, maybe I should bring my concerns before Him and trust Him to do it His way? After all, I don’t want Him to do it my way. Or do I? What do you think? Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. -- Psalm 46:10 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. -- 1 Peter 5:7

Whew! The change of schedule caused by the one week vacation must be the reason for my feeling so droopy and tired. My exercising is set back as well. That is, I can’t do nearly as much as I was doing prior to the vacation and, even then, after doing about only half as much I’m pretty much wiped out the next day. Okay, so it’s another start. So be it. There’s no sense in moping around about the setback. No sense in having a pity party with my friends (me, myself and I). I might as well get back on the program and do what I can do instead bemoaning the fact that I’ve slipped backward in this CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) condition. The visit with the doctor was so encouraging that I feel quite a letdown because of my conditioning having gone backward so much so fast. Discouraging it is. I’m down. Oh well, there’s nothing like action – at least as much action as I can – to begin the process of building back up. Right, I’m down but don’t have to stay down. Forward, unswerving, unflinching, and indomitable. Never give up. Keep on keeping on. 2 Cor.4:8 (NRSV) "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; … ……struck down, but not destroyed." Mark 9:23 (MsgB) Jesus said, "If? There are no 'ifs' among believers. Anything can happen."

Who’s On First? If you've considered baseball as a metaphor for life, you realize that life is much more than a game and that the metaphor soon breaks down to the point that it seems insignificant compared to our walk with Jesus Christ. In real life, we don’t always know what base we are on. Sometimes, we might wonder if we are even in the game at all. Whatever our thoughts about baseball as a metaphor for life, many of us have enjoyed Abbott and Costello’s classic routine of Who’s on First? Abbott: Well Costello, I'm going to New York with you. The Yankee's manager gave me a job as coach for as long as you’re on the team. Costello: Look Abbott, if you’re the coach, you must know all the players. Abbott: I certainly do. Costello: Well you know I've not met the guys. So you'll have to tell me their names, and then I'll know who's playing on the team. Abbott: Oh, I'll tell you their names, but you know it seems to me they give these ball players now-a-days very peculiar names. Costello: You mean funny names? Abbott: Strange names, pet names...like Dizzy Dean... Costello: His brother Daffy Abbott: Daffy Dean... Costello: And their French cousin. Abbott: French? Costello: Goofe' Abbott: Goofe' Dean. Well, let's see, we have on the bags, Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third... Costello: That's what I want to find out. Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third. Costello: Are you the manager? Abbott: Yes. Costello: You gonna be the coach too? Abbott: Yes. Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names. Abbott: Well I should. Costello: Well then who's on first? Abbott: Yes. Costello: I mean the fellow's name. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy on first. Abbott: Who. Costello: The first baseman. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy playing... Abbott: Who is on first! Costello: I'm asking you who's on first. Abbott: That's the man's name. Costello: That's who's name? Abbott: Yes. Costello: Well go ahead and tell me. Abbott: That's it. Costello: That's who? Abbott: Yes. On and on it goes, getting more hilarious with each line. Of course, Abbott and Costello did the routine as only they could. Very funny. Okay, who really is on first? Yep, you’re right, it’s metaphor time and it’s reflection time. I may seem silly to reflect on a ball game but reflecting is what I do. I sometimes wonder what base I’m on especially on days like today when I’m thinking through a CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) fog. But God’s grace is such that we don’t have be in doubt. That is, God makes us all winners. No matter what base we are on, He is there with us to coach us so that we can make it home. For that matter, being Omnipresent, He is at bat for us and ready to hit a line drive to bring us all home. Well ……… so much for the preachy metaphor. We all know, right?, that Jesus is there to help us. Easy to forget when we are discouraged or when we don’t feel well. But it helps to keep in mind that He’s ready and willing to go to bat for us. Matthew 28:18-20 … And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Again, I have the sermon this Sunday and again, during the course of its preparation, the sermon is not coming to life. God breathed life into a previous sermon after I asked for prayer in my blog. I would appreciate your prayers about this sermon, too, so that it will help those who hear it. Thanks.

To all of you who prayed about today’s sermon, thank you. It came together well and went better than I had planned because our Savior was in it.

Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) Is it really true that happiness is a choice? Let’s say that it is. Okay, I want to be happy. ..........................………… It didn’t work. Let’s try it again. I hereby choose to be happy. ……..Okay............ I’m waiting........................…………. Huh?..............What do you mean think happy thoughts? How in the world can I think happy thoughts when all I see is @ %#*&)( ~=`! Oops! Strike that. Anyway, I’d stick out like a sore thumb if I appeared to be happy because it’s the in thing to be sullen and hardened with that been there, done that look. But wait a minute. Surely there are plenty of other people beside myself who want to be happy. Maybe we can start a club so that we can get together and be happy without fear of others making fun of us. Think that will work? Well, there’s already such a group – The Secret Society of Happy People. This secret society has compiled a list of what it calls the types of happiness. Maybe this list will help me to think happy thoughts. Maybe this list will help me to help myself to become happy – or at least be a jumpstart to thinking happy thoughts. Types of Happiness From the Secret Society of Happy People 1. Amazed 2. Amused 3. Anticipation 4. Borrowed 5. Celebrate 6. Cheerful 7. Compassion 8. Content 9. Delight 10. Enthusiastic 11. Exuberant 12. Fun 13. Give 14. Glad 15. Gratitude 16. Hopeful 17. Humor 18. Inspiration 19. Joy 20. Love 21. Nostalgic 22. Optimistic 23. Peace 24. Play 25. Relief 26. Satisfaction 27. Spiritual 28. Spontaneous 29. Surprise 30. Sweet 31. Vivacious Of course, going to the source of happiness wouldn’t hurt, either. That is, I could pray for happiness and pray for help to think happy thoughts. Think that’ll work? Philippians 4 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

• Let’s wait until I feel like doing it. • Let’s do it another time. • Someday we’ll do it and we’ll do it right, but we’ll wait until then. • Well, maybe another time. I don’t feel so well right now. Sound familiar? How about this? - I’m tired, sore, stiff and don’t feel well, so now’s the time to go for it. Well? Why not? -- If I don’t do it now I likely will not do it at all.
- Sure, I ‘m tired and am thinking through a fog. Now’s the time to step through the fog.
Now’s the time for action - Father in Heaven, please give me the strength, energy, the will and all that I need to move past this debilitating fatigue.
Hebrews 3:7 (MsgB) That's why the Holy Spirit says, Today, please listen; Hebrews 3:13 (MsgB) For as long as it's still God's Today, keep each other on your toes so sin doesn't slow down your reflexes. Hebrews 3:15 (MsgB) These words keep ringing in our ears: Today, please listen; don't turn a deaf ear as in the bitter uprising. Hebrews 4:7-8 (MsgB) God keeps renewing the promise and setting the date as today, just as he did in David's psalm, centuries later than the original invitation: Today, please listen, don't turn a deaf ear... [8] And so this is still a live promise. It wasn't canceled at the time of Joshua; otherwise, God wouldn't keep renewing the appointment for "today." Hebrews 5:5 (MsgB) Neither did Christ presume to set himself up as high priest, but was set apart by the One who said to him, "You're my Son; today I celebrate you!"

Update Wilma flew to Boston on business this week and came back today. I missed her but she's back and, even as I write this, is working online—connected to her office—from home. Our daughter & her family still are in the process of buying the house that they found, but there has been one delay after another. It seems to be a week to week type of situation. One week, it appears that the sale will close the next week. When that week arrives, another delay emerges creating another week’s delay ... Then another and another. But, one of these weeks, they’ll be moving into their home. My 91 year old Mother seems to be doing better after taking a multiple vitamin. She’s still tired most of the time but not as bad as before and her disposition seems better than it was before she started taking the Centrum Silver. This week, my constant companion, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), i.e. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, has been reminding me of its presence – jealous maybe, thinking that I would forget it is there. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Sometimes I wonder what God is doing behind the scenes in my life – How He is working out problems – How He is protecting us from harm and from our weaknesses. Sometimes I wonder how He is preparing us for eternity. There was a period of time when I was interested in chess and tried to learn strategies of the game. I bought two electronic chess games, set them both at the highest level of play and played them against each other with the hopes of learning something by following out their individual game plans. What do you think happened? This is what happened. I was lost...didn’t have a clue as what those two games were doing against each other except that I finally saw that the two game sets were ending up in a draw. Neither game set won. And I was totally lost as to what strategies they were using. They functioned in a manner that was completely over my head. Sometimes I suspect [quite an understatement indeed ] that God functions over my head. I’m thankful for His ongoing mercy and care. I’m thankful for whatever it is that He does behind the scenes to make things work out for the long run. But I would like to have a glimpse of what He is doing once in a while ... you know, for the sake of encouragement. Romans 8 28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. 31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

Good News. We received word yesterday that our daughter & son-in-law got the keys to their "new" house. After months of living with relatives they’ll be thrilled to have a home of their own again. Our son-in-law and his dad plan to come to our house tomorrow evening to pick up belongings that were being stored here for the last several months while they were house hunting. Saturday, my wife & I have the pleasure of baby sitting our six-month old granddaughter while her parents move into their “new” house.

Some of you who are reading this are experiencing indescribable anguish – some from physical pain, some from emotional turmoil, some from unrequited love, some from being the victim of slander, some from addiction, some from disease – looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. Some of you – while looking for that light at the end of the dark tunnel – have the equivalent frame of mind as the following. Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood This is my story, this is my song Praising my savior all the day long This is my story, this is my song Praising my Savior all the day long Hats off to you. May you be blessed.

It’s moving day for our daughter and her family. An exciting time when they are taking items out of storage and hauling them to their new home. What a blessing it is for them to have young friends – including our son -- who can help them with the move. They loaded a huge U-HAUL moving van in merely a matter of a few hours and are now on their way to the house.

Yesterday, at Church, our congregation was glad to see the return of Kelly, a member who had missed weeks of Sundays due to sciatica and disk pain. He was still in pain as was obvious when he gingerly made it through the side door to find a seat. With the help of his wife and children, he reclined on one side on cushions across several seats. in the row just in front of where my wife and I were sitting. His pain was evident. His wife was our Praise Leader this week. As she led us, the congregation, in praise he, too, praised our Creator. There he was -- lying on his side across several chairs, propped up by cushions – singing praises. Then, while singing praises, lying on his right side, he painfully lifted his left arm in praise to the Lord. After a few more, songs, he worked his way to a sitting position and lifted both arms in praise to the Lord. I don’t like to cry, but I nearly “lost it” at this point. After a few more songs, he painfully, worked himself to his feet, carefully steadied himself then raised both arms into the air singing his heart out in praises to his Lord, Savior and King. No, he was not healed but there he was praising God anyway, strongly expressing his trust in and his admiration for Jesus Christ. If you have experienced agonizing pain, you know how hard it can be to give praise instead of dishing out complaints. For that matter, there are some people who are very quick to blame God for allowing suffering. Yet, this man was praising Him. Frankly, I’m proud (hopefully in a right way) to be this man’s spiritual brother.

Looking back on our lives--reflecting--is an interesting exercise. Today, I was reviewing some files I made while taking counseling classes. Part of one assignment involved listing examples of irrational self-talk, countered by rational-self talk on the same subject. Here is one of the examples which I used for this assignment shortly after 9/11/01. ~~~~~~~ Activating event: Economic slowdown as result of the September 11 terrorist attack. Irrational self-talk: We might lose our only source of income due to the economic slowdown. Consequent emotional reaction: Fear and worry. Irrational assumption producing irrational thought: The irrational assumption that our source of income will be cut off by the United States economic slowdown stems from the assumption that layoffs are imminent where my wife works. More rational, alternative view: It is not rational to base one assumption on another assumption. Assumptions are not reality. There is yet no evidence to support these assumptions. The company’s, Kronos, stock value has gone down less than most of the other NASDAQ stocks. Also, I am preparing for a career that will help the situation in case the feared assumptions become a reality. The U. S. government is taking steps that might stimulate the economy. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.~~~~~~~ Maybe it’s true that hindsight is 20/20. The rational view turned out to be more accurate than the irrational self-talk. Perhaps most of our fears really are irrational. Romans 8 28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

We all have ways of getting someone’s attention, don’t we? While reviewing some old notes for counseling class, I came across an assigned paper that I wrote on the subject. Attention Signal A signal for attention from someone for whom I care is usually a signal for attention from my wife. It sometimes comes in the form of following her around the house, then telling her that I’m following her like a puppy dog. When I do this, she smiles and sometimes makes sweet cooing sounds as she gives me an endearing hug. There are times, though, when the role is reversed and she is the one who follows me around the house and says that she is following me like a puppy dog. As far as what I did to get attention as a child, I don’t remember. However, I do remember Mother telling me of one occasion when I was barely able to walk. She had just carefully tucked me into bed, had tip toed out of the room and was walking down the hall when she heard a slight sound behind her. She turned around to see me right behind her. She said that I started laughing when she discovered me behind her. As I grew older, though, I enjoyed being alone and don’t recall signaling for attention. Other Current Attention Getters At other times, I write a small note to Wilma (my wife) and put it where she does not expect it, such as in a food container, on her pillow, or wherever. The note may be just a few words such as, “Thinking of you”, or “Hi”, or “Boo!!! ... Scared ya, heh?”. At other times, I do the unexpected to get her attention. Last night is an example. She was briskly walking from room to room for a little exercise and I was sitting in the dining room. Each time she entered the dining room, I was sitting in a different position--one leg over the arm rest, then the other leg over the arm rest, backward in the chair, in a different chair, cross legged in the chair, on the floor, backward with my legs over the back rest of the chair, etc. At other times, to get her attention I watch her until she notices that I’m looking at her, then I look quickly away with an innocent expression on my face or change the focus of my eyes to make it appear that I’m actually looking at something else. At other times, I pretend to pout while muttering quiet unintelligible words (as if to myself) while making a choice word here and there intelligible. As a side note, upon mentioning this Journal to my wife, she said that I often use humor to get her attention. Well, now, I had forgotten some of these attention getters. Maybe I can recycle them, i.e., maybe I can use them again. Do you have attention getters? Do you send out signals that attract attention?

Recently, a flight attendant was talking about the recent additions to flight restrictions and was asked about irate passengers. When asked how she deals with irate passengers she said, “I love the hell out of them”. At first, I thought she was using rather coarse language. After all, she had already said that she was a Christian. For that matter, I cringe even to write the statement here in this Blog. But the more I think about it the more I understand what she meant. Hell and love cannot co-exist. She has been a flight attendant for 29 years and she loves the evil out of passengers. She loves all that leads toward separation from God out of passengers. She loves the hell out of them. There’s a real message there. Surely you can come up with all sorts of elaborations and applications for loving the hell out of people. Oh, I just had a thought. Maybe that’s what is meant by being a people person—loving the hell out of people. Well, bah hum bug, I’m not exactly a people person. Really, throughout most of my life, I have not been a people person. So there! But maybe I should be. I have another idea. Maybe I should try doing it—loving the hell out of people. Hmmmm, gonna need help on this one. I’d better pray about it then go forward in the love of Jesus Christ. Then maybe I can love the hell out of people.

Wilma & I visited our daughter’s family Saturday and saw their “new” house for the first time. We like it. They do as well. Our 3 year old grandson, Ethan, showed me the shed in their big back yard. You might remember that I told you about Kelly (two posts ago, I think)…you know, he’s the one with the sciatic and disk pain. Well, yesterday he was doing much better but told me that he’s on steroids and has a long way to go for recovery from the back problem. But the good news is that the pain is under control. So, there you have it – the latest. That’s the way it is on August 14, 2006.

The last couple of weeks have been overshadowed somewhat by Mother’s medical condition and my dental situation. Last week, I took Mother for her 3 month appointment and all was fine except the long wait for the doctor to see her. However, Mother called me yesterday morning because she was feeling sick, weak and had blood in her urine. The doctor worked her into his schedule and said that she has an infection. He gave her two shots, prescribed antibiotics and told her to come back in two weeks. Today, she seems to be a little better. As far as my dental situation is concerned, I’m having the permanent bridge inserted. Last week, they took out the temporary bridge (broke it in the process and made a new one) inspected the area where the four teeth had been pulled and prepared my teeth for the permanent bridge which is scheduled to be installed next month. Thanks to all of you who have been praying.

Chances are that we have witnessed a miracle--probably more than merely one miracle. But most of us think of a miracle as being a sudden, magical, melodramatic occurrence such as the parting of the Red Sea or a sudden healing or a resurrection of the dead. For sure, some miracles are so obvious that they cannot be missed. On the other hand, some miracles might be going unnoticed. What about the change of heart that occurs with so many Christians? What about sadness turned to calm, peasant enjoyment of life? What about a chronic illness that ever so gradually gets better until it is forgotten? For some reason, God seems often to work in ways that seem slow and unspectacular. Sometimes, I don’t even recognize His intervention as a miracle because of its slow progression. Is it a miracle anyway? Is our Father less loving when problems fade away instead of disappearing suddenly as we would like them to do? Something to think about. James 1:17 (MsgB) Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle.

1 Peter 5: 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Thankfully, the infection that Mother had last week has cleared up after a regimen of antibiotics. But her doctor wants to see her in a week or so make sure that all is okay. Hurray!!! We had two days of rain! How wonderful gentle rain is! Oh, did we need it badly and still need more rain to end this damaging drought that we’ve been having. Although the drought is not over, the heat wave is over … for now. We are now experiencing highs in the cool 90s and even in the frigid (as it almost seems by comparison) 80s. May the Lord be praised for including rain in His creation! 1 Peter 5: 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.
