I have all my stuff in yahoo albums they are relatively user friendly too. I put my favorites that I like to share in photobucket.

So here's a question for you photo-bugs....How do you organize or categorize your pictures? I have all mine in "date taken" order (year and month). But there has got to be a better way. Any ideas?


I organize my photos by year and quarter. So I have a folder named "2005" and under it folders named "Q1", "Q2" and so on. I use to do seasons of the year but then winter spanned to years and my wife didn't like that. That's how I store them. I categorize them using ACDSee 7. It allows me to use predefined categories or create my own. I can also enter keywords for each picture to facilitate searching. Another feature I like is the ability to do batch renames. Last summer we took a trip to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. I came back with a ton of pictures but of course they were all named things like "DCP_0025.jpg". Within ACDSee I could select a range of pictures and do a batch rename which was totally customizable. I named all the Grand Teton pictures "Tetonxxx.jpg" and my Yellowston pictures "YStonexxx.jpg". It was very quick and easy. I could have had it insert the date into the name or any other scheme I wanted. It leaves the pictures alone on your hard disk other than renaming the files if you did a rename. The categorizing get's saved in their database. Although I don't use ACDSee for editing, it does provide some editing capabilities.

So I have the best of both. Pictures stored chronologically but categorized through ACDSee. I get several photography mags and they always rate ACDSee highly. It's not too expensive either. I think you can download a free trial.

For sharing my photos I now use www.webshots.com. It also allows me to download some beautiful backgrounds and screen savers including inserting my own photos. For editing I mostly use Jasc Paint Shop Pro although I have Adobe Elements. Jasc is easier to use and can do more. Someday I'll buy PhotoShop but Jasc can do most of what PhotoShop can do for a fraction of the price.

The Moose avatar I use is from a picture I took last summer in the Tetons. I got within about 25' of this Moose. I must have taken 50 pictures of him including some with him in a pond with the Grand Tetons in the background. Of course the resolution is very low for use as an Avatar. My camera is an 8mp.

I love your moose avatar!!! I saw it yesterday and I wondered if it was a photo you took. I was born in Alaska so I'm partial to mooses.

Thanks for the ideas!! I use JASC psp 7 for editing my photos too. I guess I need to take some tutorials because I know there is so much more I can do with this program besides red-eye fixing and cropping.

If you do a search on Google for "Paint Shop Pro Tricks" you will see a ton of pages with tutorials and tips. Some of them are very good. To me the advantage of using Adobe Elements or PhotoShop is that there are a ton of books, "How To" articles in magazines, and classes. Paint Shop Pro is just as good or better but it's not as well known. You're lucky to find one book on it. The web is actually your best resource of information. I believe it can do more than Elements and only lacks a few things (mostly desktop publishing related) compared to PhotoShop. I love it.

I also got some close ups of Elk. I am mainly into nature and landscape photography although I do a bit of everything.

Hi all!
I'm new but i've been lurking some. And i use to post ocassionally a long time ago. Anyway, I like photography too. At one time i wanted to start my own business. Unfortunately, i'm not very good. Figured being good was required to start a photography business. [:D] I just graduated with a 4 year degree in Information Systems in December but before then i didn't have time to take classes or practice. I have time now . . .but i still haven't gotten back on track. I was in school so long i guess i'm just enjoying not doing anything at all. Maybe one day i'll get pretty good at it.

While it's true that practice makes perfect, today's new cameras make it very easy to get good results with little or no knowledge. Where I had to learn how to focus, when to use the flash, and how to set the exposure, today just about any basic point and shoot camera will do that for you. Work on your composition and let the camera take care of the technical details at first. Then, as your composition gets better you can experiment with the controls on your camera.

Did you ever do any developing Bill?

I did in high school...just black and white, but man it was fun. My senior year, I was the only one who knew how to develop....any film I didn't do was taken to K-Mart for developing (how sad is that?).

My dad bought a whole bunch of developing equipment before he passed away...I'm still trying to get my mom to give it to me (if it even works - I think the enlarger was dropped at one point).

No, never got the chance. I picked up photography after I was out of school, and it's hard to set up a darkroom in an apartment. That's one good thing about digital, snapshots can be uploaded or printed immediately. I can't wait for Nikon to make an affordable digital SLR. The D70 is still selling for close to $1,000.

I love photography, I was going to go to school for it but got married and had kids!!

I plan on taking some classes at a local center. I enjoy it so much, I always have a camera on me. I love taking pics of my kids, nature. Whatever catches my attention.

I organize my pictures usually within my kids, then time wise once i have all the kids pics separated from the rest, then I put the others in date order.

I caught the photo bug about 3 years ago when my family got our first digital camera. The next year, we went on a spiffy cross-country trip, and I took some really great pics. I like to think that I have an eye for a good pic. [sm=icon_smile_approve.gif] While on the trip, they were annoyed that I was constantly taking pics.. but when we got home and they saw the pics, they were so impressed that they all chipped in and bought me my own diggie for Christmas later that year. [sm=icon_smile_super.gif] It's a 4MP Canon job. I love it! It's got so many features that I'm still trying to figure it out.

At some point I'd love to get a really snazzy digital SLR camera with a zillion megapixels and lenses and all that stuff. But for now, my current diggie is great. I'm also itching to hook up my camera to my telescope. I just have to find a mount that fits, or figure out how to jury-rig it...

This is a hobby I definitely intend to devote more time to in the future, and have considered taking a class or two at my local university. I've reached the point recently in which I'm about ready to just carry my camera around with me all the time, becuase I often see something I wish I could take a picture of, but can't because I don't have my camera handy... and the cheap little camera on my cell phone just doesn't cut it. [8|]

okay.....I've been dreaming and surfing the shopping sites and looking at SLR's to see how inexpensive I could get one.....thing is....I want one with a hot shoe so I can add my own flash for indoor shots (very important to me - doing weddings on occasion and all) it just seems like the included flashes don't usually do too well indoors (or so the reviews say).

If you have any thoughts - let me know....I'm thinking about 5 or 6 mp.

Do you own a 35mm SLR? If you do, I'd look at what's available from the same manufacturer. Saves money on accessories. If not, the Nikon D100 is a 6.1mp fully automatic digital SLR. It can use the full line of Nikon-compatible lenses and accessories. It's currently my dream digital. Unless you count the custom built 15mp that uses an F-3 body and a digital unit from Kodak. I think that goes for somewhere around $20,000. I have two Nikon 35mm, so when I go digital, it's gonna have to be Nikon. My oldest sister has a Canon that she swears by.

Yeah, I have a Minolta XGA (35mm). But my digital is Kodak. I'm trying to decide if I really want another camera or not. Okay, I want one, but do I really need one, probably not, or at least not yet.

One problem I have with digital photography is "graininess" when using high zoom (up to 40 times). Anyone have some tips in the editing department?

as for the graininess issue, I usually use the Jpeg artifact removal tool in Painshop Pro, or the despeckle tool. I also try not to go past the optical zoom on my camera, I hardly ever get good results with the digital zoom unless it is on something really still.

I'll check out my editor this afternoon. Been going to turn off zoom altogether on my camera but it is a very hard thing to do. After all, I might just miss that perfect shot or something - know what I mean?

I never use the digital zoom on my camera. Even if I use a tripod, it still seems kinda grainy. So I just stick with the optical zoom.

It's FANTABULOUS for both the digicam newb and more experienced user as well.

I love photography. I was in heaven when my mom bought me a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm SLR. I worked for a photographer, and learnt much from him. I also photographed several weddings for friends and aquaintenances.

I got my digicam two years ago, off eBay. I wanted something similar to an SLR with lots of manual control. At the time I wasn't paying attention to or very interested in megapixels - and I got a 2.1 mp Olympus Camedia C700, with rechargable batteries, a battery charger, and a 16mb smart media card, and the USB cable for about $250. It retailed at over $600, and I have loved it. I broke the flash on it though, when some object fell from a shelf and happened to land JUST ON MY FLASH - of all places!!

I just purchased another cheap but good camera from Ebay, because Olympus wanted almost $200 when all was said and done to fix my flash. I got an older model Toshiba 3.3 mp camera for taking my indoor flash shots. It works pretty well.

I use Paint Shop Pro to edit and optimize all my pictures.

I've attached a very recent pic, taken with my new Toshiba. the lake REALLY was that color; the only adjustment I made to the pic ws to resize it. It may look a bit fuzzy because I had to optimize it quite a bit to keep it under the 40k limit for uploading.

Oh, btw...I usually organize my photos in folders by subject matter - "Scenery", "Kids", "Flowers", "Church", "Grandpas" etc. I'm terrible with remembering dates, but I can remember "events", so that's how I organize them.

On the subject of digital zoom...no, the digital zoom isn't going to give you the sharp quality that your optical zoom will. HOWEVER, I was very pleased with the digital zoom results for this one picture, that I was taking just to see how much I could zoom. I did not use a tripod (at least, I don't think I did; I honestly don't remember.)

one on the left is just normal wide angle, and the one on the right, zoomed all the way in, (10x digital zoom). You can see the details on the houses!! And I'm telling you...that's a couple of miles away from where I was!!! Probably about one and a half to two miles "as the crow flies", I guess...

No, it's not gonna hang on the wall, framed and admired...but it sure is COOL!!! LOL Maybe I could be a private eye...hee hee

I use The GIMP for photo editing. It's free, and just as good as the full blown Photoshop. Works great.

I just bought a Canon Rebel EOS SLR about a year and a half ago. It was that or continue using my dads twenty+ year old slr that was fully manual. It weighed more than my calc book! [sm=crazy.gif] I didn't go digital 'cause there was no way I could afford it.

I just graduated with a Visual Communications degree so my Rebel should be useful. I LOVE taking candid shots of the kids at my church. I was the unofficial youth photographer when I was still in youth group. Now I just take pics of everyone when they aren't looking. I get some real interesting ones sometimes.

Right now I keep my cd's organized by event/people there. The ones of my church are in one bag organized by date. My family pics are in another bag and so on. I get the cd's from the developers so I can't sort the files as well as I want. One of these days I get to it [sm=icon_smile_roll.gif].
