Markav: Captian, those are Romulan type transmission. Last I saw on of them, it was just before the sneak attack at Listening Station 163!

Captain: Did you say Romulan?

Markav: Yes, Captain.

Captain: Cancel Yellow alert, and call off security.

Markav: Captain?

Captain: Do as I say, I'll be on the bridge in a few minutes. Continue on course as planned. Nemo out.

Markav stood by the communication console with a look of total shock, surprise, and confusion.

Nemo stood in his office with Kanani. What has Turnel done now.

Kanani: What is it Adam?

Nemo: Turnel is here.

Kanani: Ambassador Turnel?

Nemo: Yes. I have him here at my request. I had hoped to keep him under raps for a little longer, but things have gotten complicated. I'm going to have to find him and find out what's going on.

Kanani: Be careful.

Nemo: I always am.

Kanani: Adam, I don't want anyone to see me leave your ready room.

Nemo: Agreed... Nemo to the transporter room.

Transporter guy: Yes, Captain.

Nemo: Beam up an individual from the cordinates 040010 in the Captain's ready room and send the individual to 42245.

T guy: Ten Forward? Aye Captain.

Kanani is beamed to Ten Forward. When she gets there, she takes a deep breathe and realizes that she has already gotten too involved. As much as she enjoys serving on the USS Debit Card with a friend and colleage and with Counselor Troi, her past haunts her. Being even 5 feet from the bridge brings back memories. It was a wonderful time. Serving as her mother's 1st officer was a dream come true. It was just two months after the the USS DayQuil left for the voyage into Alpha Quadrant 17 when her mother's ship was attacked by the Borg. The ship escaped and many of the crew survived, except her mother. She sacrificed herself for the entire ship by implanting a deadly virus into the main Borg system which destroyed at least 10 Borg cubes. Thousands of Borg perished that day- all because of Melanie Troi. But the pain of losing her was too difficult to bear. She stepped down from her Commander position, vowing never be a higher office again.

Then Kanani remembers. Dr. RAM! Dr. RAM was Borg before she was captured and it was just about the time when her mother died.

Just as Kanani remembers, Dr. RAM enters Ten Forward.

Nemo stands alone in his ready room contemplating what he should do next. His options are limited and his time is running out. Finally, he makes a decision.

Captain: Lt. Roc.

Roc: Roc here, captain.

Captain: Lt, there is an Ambassador on board, by my request. I currently have him staying in Commander Shell's quarters, however he may not be there. He is a Romulan Ambassador. I would like for you to find him and secretly escort him to the waiting room by the conference room on the bridge. Once you have him there, leave a guard and meet me in the conference room. Understood?

Roc: Will he be cooperative?

Captain: Just tell him Adam said it was time. Nemo out.

Nemo waited a few moments wondering just who needed to be contacted next. Once his decision was made he acted decisively.

Captain: speaking into his com. Commander Shell, Chaplin Mulcahay, Dr. RAM, Lt. Roc, Lt. Markav, Lt. Brenda, Lt. Li, Counselor Troi, report to the conference room in five minutes. Nemo out.

Commander Shell leans back in the first officer's chair, observing the Bridge crew. They're mostly newbies, scared, and kind of annoying. She thinks back to the conversation she had with the Captain. Obviously he has a personal problem with her. His words grate on her nerves, playing over and over again in her memory.

She sighs, and one of the ensigns looks over in her direction. She narrows her eyes at him and he quickly turns back around.

The more she thinks about that conversation, the angrier she becomes. How dare he question her capability or her leadership qualities? Just because her methods are different than his...

Captain: speaking into his com. Commander Shell, Chaplin Mulcahay, Dr. RAM, Lt. Roc, Lt. Markav, Lt. Brenda, Lt. Li, Counselor Troi, report to the conference room in five minutes. Nemo out.

Shell raises an eyebrow at this announcement. Something is developing, that is quite obvious. How can she pretend that nothing is bothering her? She thinks about it for a moment, and then smiles. Of course, she has the perfect answer to that question. One of the advantages to being a Trill is that she has many past personalities at her willing disposal. Most Trills don't take advantage of this for the fear that a past host will become dominant. But Shell learned to master that quite a long time ago... She sifts through her memories and finds the perfect match... She closes her eyes, take a deep breath...

Shell opens her eyes and stands from her chair, the same air of confidence that she always has had, but something ever so slightly different about the way she walks. As she heads to the conference room, one of the Ensigns turns to her.

Ensign (nervously): Is everything...OK? Are we in danger?

Shell smiles at him sweetly.

Shell: Just do your job, honey, and everything will be fine. You wouldn't be here if you weren't capable.

She winks at him and heads into the conference room. She is the first one to arrive. As each person walks in with a grave expression, she smiles warmly and greets them encouragingly. When Mulcahay walks in, his expression dark, she smiles.

Shell: Why so glum Father? You know a frown is just a smile turned upside down.

She smiles warmly.

The conference room slowly filled with tension and one by one the summoned crew members arrived and took their seats. Captain Nemo was the last to arrive. He looks around and sees what makes up his senior staff. Only one over the rank of full Lt. He glances at Shell, who has a surprisingly calm serene look to her. Something is going on.

Captain: Thank you all for coming. The reason for this meeting is to let you know what the mission of this ship is. There are two reason's we have been dispatched, one is to explore a previously unexplored sector of Beta Quadrant. This mission should take us approximately three to five years to complete. But before we begin that mission there is another mission we have to complete.

Nemo taps his com-badge.

Security, bring in our guest.

A moment later a security guard escorts Ambassador Turnel into the conference room.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Romulan Abmassador Turnel, the Romulan Ambassador to Andor. Our first mission is to escort Ambassador to a secret meeting on Tau Setty Two. This meeting is very time sensative and now our diversion to rescue the BEACON is endangering the timing. It is very important that each of you keep your stations on alert and keep your teams working at peek effeciency.

I know some of you may be very uncomfortable having a Romulan on board. He and I both understand this, however, you must understand that the mission he is to complete is vital to Starfleet, and we are to give him our complete cooperation.

We are about a day and a half away from the Beacon, we're going to be running hot for awhile to try to cut that time down, that means some systems may have to be taken off line. Also, there is the possiblilty that a sabatour may be on board. I want all of you to be cautious and on the look out for any suspicious actions.

Nemo looked at his officers, some of their faces betrayed their thoughts and emotions, Markav, Mulcahy, Shell, Roc, some betrayed nothing, Troi, Brenda, RAM

If any of you have something on your mind, and I can tell some of you do, speak now.

Silence filled the room. No one wanted to say anything. Nemo knew that his staff had not been together long enough to feel free to express themselves, except for Shell, and he had just finished dressing her down. He would have to try something different to get the mistrust out in the open.

Dr. is Sickbay ready to receive all the possible casualties?

RAM: I have projected the possible senerios, and have prepared to receive all injured crewmen that could be aboard. I have made preparations for have cargo bays three and six turned to emergency triages if necessary.

Captain: Very good. Okay everybody, let's get ready. Dismissed, Troi, Markav, Mulcahy, Shell, I would like for you to stay for a moment.

The rest of the staff quickly left the conference room. Once the room was emptied of everyone except who the Captain wanted, he began to weed out the problems.

Counselor Troi, I wanted to let you know that last night, you were placed unconscious by the Ambassador. I asked him to stay in your quarters to stay out of sight. I did not anticipate your arrival till early this morning.

Troi: I see.

Turnel: My appologies, Counselor.

Captain: You were about to announce his presence and I didn't want anyone to know he was here until it was time. Unfortunately everything else that has happened in the last twenty four hours has made that a mute point. Still, I also appologize for what happened.

Troi: Captain, there is no need to appologize.

Shell's demeanor slightly changes

Shell: You had better take the appology while you can, there's no telling when you'll get another one.

Captain: Commander, is there something on your mind?

Shell: (straining to keep her composure) Do I have permission to speak freely?

Captain: As long as stay away from insubordination.

Markav and Mulcahy exchanged a look between themselves.

Shell: Okay, then I'll keep it to this, why are we babysitting an enemy ambassador on our ship?

Captain: Ambassador Turnel is not the enemy.

Shell: He attacked a member of our crew, with your blessing.

Captain: He did not have my blessing.

Shell: Then what do you call it?

Troi: Bad timing.

Shell: ( her own personality now taking over) Don't go defending him.

Troi: I'm not. All it was, was simple bad timing. The captain anticipated my arrival to be later than it was, the secreat nature of the ambasadors presence was about to be compromised unnecessarily, so the ambassador took the only action that was logical for him to take, and without harming me, he was able to maintain his annonimity.

Turnel: I appreciate your understanding.

Markav: Was that the same reasoning behind the attack on listening post 163?

Turnel: I assure you, Lt. the attack on listening post 163 was a mistake.

Markav: A mistake that cost almost two hundred lives.

Turnel: A tragic mistake which I advised against.

Shell: Obviously they don't listen to you.

Turnel: There are three entities that via for power on Romulus. The military, the Senate, and the Tal Shiar. Ambassadors generally are assigned by the senate.

Shell: So who ordered the attack on listening post 163?

Turnel: The Tal Shiar ordered and carried out the attack.

Markav: Why?

Turnel: That, I cannot tell you, Lt. They, for some reason, felt the listening post possed a danger to the security of the empire.

Shell: Told you he was the enemy.

Markav: Commander, if you don't mind I would like a few answers from this man.

Shell: Careful how you talk to a superior officer, Lt.

Markav: Higher ranking, maybe, superior? I'm not sure.

Shell: Lt, I'll bust you down...

Captain: Commander, stand down.

Shell: Are you going to let this thing talk to me like that?

Nemo stared down his commander who stood a long moment before finally turning and looking out the windows.

Turnel: Lt. I doubt I have the answers you are looking for. All I can tell you is that, yes, the Tal Shiar attacked listening post 163 because they precieved a threat. No, they were not supported by the military or the senate. And no, the attack did not do anything to help the empire, either militarily, politically, or foreign policy wise. The act was a disaster, in every way imaginable.

Markav: Thank you, ambassador. You have my support.

Turnel: Thank you Lt.

Markav: Father?

Mulchay: I have no other questions.

Captain: Counselor?

Troi: YOu have my support ambassador, Captain.

Captain: Thank you, dismissed.

Troi, Markav, and Mulchay exited the conference room, leaving the Captain, Turnel and Shell.

Captain: Commander.

Shell turns around.

Do you have anything to say?

Shell: No.

Captain: Dismissed.

Shell: Do I have my quarters back?

Captain: Yes. Thank you.

Shell: Don't thank me for following orders.

Shell leaves the conference room.

Markav thinks: Did I just hear the Captain right? Stand down from yellow alert?! Shakes his head briefly. He's the captain, and a very good one from what I've been able to find out...

Markav says aloud:Rrrrggggghh... Stand down from yellow alert. Security, cancel my orders concerning the search teams.

As Markav starts back toward the Captain's Chair, he sees Commander Shell has not only just entered, but is sitting in the chair. Turning around, Markav heads back to his post. But, not before he catches what could possible be a sneer on the Commander's face.

As Markav does a routine diagnostice on the Comm system, he hears from his communicator:
Commander Shell, Chaplin Mulcahay, Dr. RAM, Lt. Roc, Lt. Markav, Lt. Brenda, Lt. Li, Counselor Troi, report to the conference room in five minutes. Nemo out.

Markav thinks: Now what?! Purrs to himself... Hopefully, the Captain will shed some light on things... I would just love to know why a Romulan is on board here. I just hope that he wasn't at 163....

Feeling himself start to tense up, Markav forces himself to relax. Thankfully, his hand claws were just starting to come out when he caught himself, so no one seemed to notice them. Sometimes, being half human and half felonian was hard. If it wasn't jokes about him chasing mice to, "What haven't you been declawed," it was blank stares at him or questioning glances. He has to admit, though, the funniest comment was if he was half dwarf and half Vulcan. He just shakes his head, purring softly to himself.

Markav to himself: Sometimes, if You are out there, God, I wish You would have made more half human/half felonians. Then, maybe I would be better accepted.

Glancing at his cromometer, Markav realizes he needs to get moving. Commander Shell is just walking through the door of the conference room. Commenting to himself: Is the Commander smelling different all of a sudden?? Markav pushes that thought away for now...

Walking into the Conference room, Markav takes his assigned seat. It's one of the few on the who ship that's made for someone like him, someone with a tail. He leans back somewhat, at least trying to give the impression that he's relaxed. Looking around, he sees them enter, one-by-one. Some seem to be confused with what's going on. Some seem to have a clue. Or, maybe they just think that they do. Then, Captain Nemo starts to speak...

Markav sees that most of the people have their hands above the table. He, however, keeps his underneath. Although he thinks he knows what may happen, he doesn't want to frighten anyone. He's noticed over the years that having a toothy grin with very sharp teeth frighten people enough. Suddenly having claws appear from between his fingers, though, sometimes causes great panic. He knows that the Captain and the Commander know some of his abilities, but he doubts that the others do. Maybe Chaplain Mulcahy does. He can't remember for sure. Still, can't be too careful.

He hears the Captain call for the "guest" to be brought in. Forcing his mouthy shut tight, Markav waits. As the door opens, the scent is definitely Romulan, but not a familiar one. As the Romulan walks in, Markav feels his claws extend, his ears and tail twitch with quick, jerking motions, and a roar start in his gut, but not getting any farther. No, he does not look or smell familiar. That, at least, is good.

Markav thinks: Ambassador Turnel, hmmmm? I've at least heard some good things about him.. Still... Almost passively, Markav contemplates how the others are reacting, almost hearing nothing about the ship that they have to rescue, or the sector in... Whatever quadrant... That they were to explore... Most particular were Commander Shells and Chaplain Mulcahy's expressions. Mulcahy seems to know him, though that's all he can discern. Commander Shell, though.... He just can't place it....

Upon hearing permission to leave, Markav gets up. But, almost distantly, Markav hears his name called to stay. So, he sits back down. Markav watches with deep courosity as the Captain, Troi, the Ambasador and Commander Shell talk. Out of the courner of his eye, he catches a very odd express from Chaplain Mulcahy, one that he then realizes was also on his face, when the Captain tells Commander Shell to "avoid insubordination." Then, he notices a difference in her scent, yet again...

Markav thinks: What is going on? Does my nose need cleaning or something? I've never smelled someone's scent change like that!

As they all talk, Markav finally feels the need to say... Was that the same reasoning behind the attack on listening post 163?

Turnel: I assure you, Lt. the attack on listening post 163 was a mistake.

Markav to himself: I'm having a hard time believin that. Aloud: A mistake that cost almost two hundred lives.

Looking back and forth between the Commander and Turnel, Markav wonders why the Commander seems to be as angery with the Romulans as he is. Then, aloud to Turnel: Why?

Turnel: That, I cannot tell you, Lt. They, for some reason, felt the listening post possed a danger to the security of the empire.

Shell: Told you he was the enemy.

Feeling really irritated with the Commander, who doesn't seem to know him or his experiences, he turns to Commander Shell and say as politely as possible: Commander, if you don't mind I would like a few answers from this man.

Shell: Careful how you talk to a superior officer, Lt.

Markav pauses, but just not able to resist the sarcasim: Higher ranking, maybe, superior? I'm not sure.

Shell: Lt, I'll bust you down...

Captain: Commander, stand down.

Shell: Are you going to let this thing talk to me like that?

Markav carefully watches the two of them. Says to himself: These two seem to be having a real power struggle here. I wonder why? Did he not choose her? Seeing that she finally backs down, he turns back to the Ambassador. When he responds, Markav suddenly feels some of his anger lessen. Is that a faint tear I see in his eye? Markav asks himself as he notices genuin regret in the Romulan's voice. Maybe there is hope for us and this... Meeting....

Markav: Thank you, ambassador. You have my support.

Markav barely hears anything else, except the permission to leave. He is too busy with his own thoughts... Thoughts about the Romulans being more than what he has thought.. Thoughts about what this mission was all about... Thoughts about if Chaplain Mulhany actually knows the Romulan Ambassador... Thoughts about this very..... peculiar... relaitonship between the Commander and the Captain.

Markav thinks: Although that Commander Shell definitely earned that smart remark of mine... I do hope that it won't burn me.. But, it probablly will...

As his thoughts drift, he hears a soft giggle in the back of his mind... He thinks: With all of this going on, how should I expect the Captain to take seriously my problem with my niece running away and my attempts to try and adopt her from her very disfuctional family?? I probably should wait a while before even trying to bring it up with him. After all, with us flying like a..... cat with it's tail on fire...??
Markav assumes his station, just now realizing that he has growled a little too loud while he was so deep in thought.

Markav mutters to the nearest very shocked ensign: Sorry... Didn't mean anything..

Markav returns to his work, and his thoughts...

Shell steps out of the conference room and back onto the Bridge, the irritated look that had once disappeared set firmly back in place. She hears Markav growl and sees the Ensign's scared reaction.

Shell: Careful Markav, you're scaring the children.

Markav just looks at her, not saying anything.

Shell: What's wrong, cat got your tongue?

She starts laughing and turns away from him, but still speaking to him.

Shell: Don't worry Markav. Any time you want to find out which of us is the "superior" officer, just let me know. I've got a little angst to work out anyway.

She pounds her fist into her other hand a couple times and walks over to Troi.

Shell: Hey, can I speak to you for a moment.

Troi: Of course, you're the Commander.

Shell: I don't get it. How can you just accept the ambassador's explanation for knocking you out? Are you just doing it to get on the Captain's good side?

Troi looks at her confused.

Troi: No... I meant what I said in that conference room.

Shell (under her breath): How can you believe he took the only "logical" recourse. You're sounding like a Vulcan.

Troi: We can learn alot from Vulcans. Why are YOU so distrustful of people? I sense a lot of anger in you.

Shell: It's not anger, it's called "command." And this isn't about me.

Troi: Now it is.

Shell: Well, now this conversation is over.

She spins on her heel and walks across the Bridge, planting herself in the Captain's chair with a contented sigh.

Captain's Personal log
Stardate 2070.11.12

We are about twenty four hours away from the Beacon. Tomorrow I'll have to push the engines to try to get to her sooner.

I finally had to let the senior staff know about Turnel. Our emergency rescue of the Beacon is throwing our time table off, by quite a bit. Hopefully the rescue will not take too long. But I'm afraid it won't.

I finally had a long talk with Commander Shell. I've given her fair warning, if she doen't straighten up her act, I'll have to put her on report. I'm just not sure how I'm going to function on this ship with her as my first officer. Hopefully we won't be delayed too long before I can pick up my second officer.

We have a long day ahead of us, I've got to get some sleep.

At 12 midnight earth time, Ten Forward closes for a few hours before reopening at 2 a.m. to make some time for cleaning. Although Kanani's shift ends at midnight and the next shift comes in to take over for the rest of the night, she decides to stay a bit longer on the first night and relaxes on one of the couches. She's tired. It was one heck of a celebration party. With a deep sigh...

Kanani: Computer (the only computer she has access to on the ship is the one for Ten Forward). One hot choco with extra whipped cream. Hot coco appears on the coffee table. She takes a sip and thinks how close it tastes to her mother's coco. After a few sips, Lt. markov enters Ten Forward.

Markov: Evening Kanani. Oh... where is everyone? Oh that's right, Ten Forward is closed at this time. Pardon me. Markov purrs out of embarrasement.

Kanani: No that quite alright Lt. Off for the night?

Markov: (Stretches. His claws come out and doesnt even realize it) Rowwwll. Yes.

Kanani: Please, have something nice and warm. Would you like to try some hot cocoa? It's really delicious. (Kanani thinks just how intriguing Markov is. She has never met a half human, have felonian before).

Markov: Thank you Kanani (Markov sits on the couch right next to her. He is quite relieved to be done with his shift. Kanani senses his slight tension)

Kanani: Lt. Are you alright? You seem a little tense.

Markov: Sigh. It's been one heck of a first day. I take it you heard about the Romulan Ambassador who is on board. It was quite a shock at first. But I trust the Captain and if he says that everything is fine then I should believe him. I just can't believe that a Romulan is on this ship, even though he from the senate. But... (Markov hesitates for a moment) I'm sorry Kanani but have to vent about something.

Kanani: Please. Vent away.

Markov: I think I'm going to have major problems serving on this ship with Commander Shell. Alrighty on our first day, she and I have butted heads and to think that I have to live 3-5 years with that woman. I never met anyone, much less a woman who is so... so prideful and arrogant. (Markov's ears fall back a little). To have her as our 1st officer will be tough for me. Anyway, sorry to lay this talk on you.

Kanani smiles a bit: No I understand completely. To not be able to get along with your superior officer IS frustrating. Afterall, you are supposed to trust this person with your life. Commander Shell may be tough, but she does care. When a life and death situation occurs, you can be sure that she will be will be there for you. You would do the same for her. Both of you have been trained well. My rule of thumb when it comes to not getting along with other crew members is to just ignore it and try your best to be at least cordial with that person, no matter how that other person treats you. That is what a true Federation officer is all about

Markov was blown away at Kanani's reaction. His ears start to go forward again: Kanani you don't how much better I feel now. Thank you so much.

Kanani: Your welcome. (Kanani giggles).

Markov: What's so funny?

Kanani: I'm sorry. I love the way Felonians display their "non-verbal" communication.

Markov: Oh. yeah. (Markov is a little embarrased again) That's what happens. When we are stressed, threatened, or even sad, our ears fall back. But humans have a way of communicating their moods non-verbally too- like fitgeting when they are nervous or looking away when embarrased. I've done all of that but the Felonian side seems a bit stronger.... Oh look at the time. I should let you get some rest. I'm going to need it too. My off time is a bit longer than the others. Afterall, I'm part Felonian and the one thing we love to do is sleep for as long as we can to rejuvinate.

Kanani: Well, I'll walk out with you.

Markov and Kanani exit Ten Forward. They go their separate ways. Markov thanks Kanani again for her company and they both say their good byes.

Ship's log
Stardate 2070.11.13
Captain Adam Nemo reporting. 06:00

I have ordered my senior officers to take the first two shifts off, with the exception of engineering, they'll be on duty all day today, or at least Brenda and her top staff.

We are at least 24 hours away from the Beacon, and we haven't heard anything from them in 14 hours. I'm going to have to push the engines, which is why I have ordered Brenda and her crew to stay on duty. Once we reach the Beacon, then we'll need the rest of the senior staff.

Captain: Bridge to engineering.

Lt. Brenda: Engineering here.

Captain: Okay, let's do this.

Lt. Brenda: Captain I'm advising against this.

Captain: Yes, Lt. you have advised against this seven times, filed three official protests and have made three effigies of me and burned them in warp plasma. You've made your point. But I'm not listening. We have to get to the Beacon, and we have to get there quickly, and the only way to cut that time down is by running at warp 9 as long as we can. I don't care if we do it at 30 minute increments, that cut's down on how much longer they have to stay stranded out there. So your going to give me warp nine for as long as you can, we'll rest them at warp seven, then bring them back up to warp nine, and we'll do this for as long as it takes to get there. Understood?

Lt. Brenda: Understood Captain, engineering out.

Nemo hated doing that to his engineer, especially since they had not had the time to build a trusting relationship. He knew by her record that she was one of the best, he only hoped that she understood that he knew what he was doing.

Captain: Helm, warp nine.

Walking down the hall at a moderately fast pace, Markav contemplates what just happened in Ten Forward. That was a great coco, best one he's had in quite a while. And, that was a nice conversation. But, why on earth did he just tell Kanani all about his frustrations with Commander Shell? It does seem that she has experience working on ships, possibly even as a crew member, but still...

He rounds a corner, ears and tail twitching slightly in his agitation. He says to himself:
I've been an intell soldier for years, and yet, there I go, talking with someone who doesn't need to know about my relationship with the Commander.

Markav steps infront of his door, which slides open for him. Sighing deeply, almost sounding like a rumbling growl, Markav walks in. Shaking his head, he walks into the dimly lit room. As his eyes adjust to the more comfortable level of light, he walks over to one of the control panel. First, he selects some classical music. Beetoven. Then, he selects on of his more favorite dishes, roasted wild mountain goat with a rich, dark gravy and various vegetables. Unlike his mother and most other Felonians, he can eat meat raw, but it really bothers his stomach. Still, at least he can.

As he sits down on one of his specially made sofas, eating his meal in silence, he looks around his small quarters. Unlike at home or at Listening Post 163, he has a standard sized room. No high ceiling so that he could have a real perch instead of the lounge couch he has for a bed. But, then the neighbors above him wouldn't be thrilled about him.

Looking around, he sees various pictures, paintings, and other sourviners that he or his family collected over the years. His eyes linger on the last family picture of him and his parents, taken almost 7 years ago. He was getting ready to go to 163. His dad's hair was just starting to get grey. His mom's fur was still the pristine tan that he had always remembered. He feels moisture on his cheek, and he realizes that he is starting to cry...

He turns his gaze to the picture of his only sibling, who died many years ago. She wasn't even a teenager yet. Sighing deeply, Markav reflects on how the young girl, more felonian than himself, loved to spend some much time swimming and climbing trees. Then, the accident.... Because of her small size, someone had mistaken her for a mountain lion, and...

Markav cannot stomach any more of the food... Tossing the dishes onto a nearby table with a loud clatter, he walks to the large viewport. He feels, and sees the reflection of, the tears trickle down the side of his face.

He says to himself: Why am I made to suffer like this, God? Or, are you even out there? Why? Why make me loose so much? Why make me such a killing machine, but yet be so totally helpless when it comes to protecting those that I love? Why?

A flashing red light catches his eye. Walking over to his personal comm station, he sees that the security personel who had talked with him earlier had tried to get ahold of him, again.

Markav mutters: Must have been when I was in that brief with the Captian.

He listens to them report that his niece's parents have been ruled unfit to keep her. Yes, they knew that he had recently left Eart in USS Debit Card, but hoped that he could make arrangements to take care of her. Sighing deeply, he types out a response, that it will be a long time before he will be back at Earth. He then gives them the address of two of his other uncles. Signing and sending it, he mutters:

Probably just as well, I seem to be, what? A black cat? Bad luck?

With that, Markav walks over to this lounge bed. Taking off his uniform and just tossing it unceramoniously to the side, he lays down. Rest eventually comes to him. But, even then, a tear occassionly slips from behind closed eyelids.

Ships Log
Suplimental

We have run our engines to the point of burning them out. My chief engineer is about ready to shoot me out a torpedo tube, but we have trimmed eight hours off of our time to the Beacon. We still haven't heard anything from them, I can only assume the worst, and hope for the best.

Security has reported that two thirds of the ship has been trippled checked for sabotage. It is my hope that the sabotour is no longer on board.

My senior staff is now on duty and we are running at warp 7, on yellow alert. We should be at the last known location of the Beacon within the half hour.

Captain: Lt. Grayfoot, any word from the Beacon?

Grayfoot: Not yet sir.

Captain: Helm when we get to within two minutes of the last known position of the Beacon drop out of warp and proced at full impulse.

Shell: Cutting it close aren't we Captain.

Captain: I don't want to wast any more time than what we already have. Sick bay is everything prepared down there?

RAM: Of course captain.

Li: Captain, dropping out of warp, and proceding at full impulse.

Captain: Red Alert. Scan the area, look for our ship.

The steady hum of the impulse engines and beeping of the computers were the only sounds heard on the bridge.

Roc: Captain, I've found the Beacon, and she's surrounded by two Romulan Birds of Prey.

Shell: Shields up, weapons on alert.

Not the orders I would have given at this moment but very prudent.

Captain: Security, get Ambassador Turnel up here. Open hailing frequencies. Romulan vessel, this is Captain Nemo of the USS Debit Card. Please state your intentions, and reasons for being in Federation Space.

Grayfoot: No response.

Roc: Captain the port ship is moving off.

Shell: Open fire.

Captain: Belay that order.

Shell: We need to stop them or go after them, there's no telling what or who they took.

Captain: Lives first commander, then technology and secrets.

Grayfoot: Captain the commander of the remaining ship is responding.

Captain: On screen.

Romulan Commnader: Captain Nemo, I am commander Sakkret, how may I be of assistance?

Captain: First of all, you can tell me what you are doing bya disabled starfleet vessel?

Commander Sakkret: We were rendering aid to your sister ship.

Captain: What is the condition of the crew?

Commander Sakkret: There were a few injuries, but nothing major.

Captain: I would like to speak with Captain Carroll.

Commander Sakkret: I'm afraid she was one of the crew members who was injured.

Captain: Would you mind if I sent a team to our sister ship to inspect the damage?

Commander Sakkret: Of couse not. It is, after all, one of your ships.

Captain: Thank you. Debit Card out. Commander Shell, take a full security team...

Roc: Captain, the other Bird of Prey had just moved off and jumped to warp.

Nemo stood only for a moment staring at the screne.

Roc, Shell, full boarding party, armed. Get over there and find out what is going on.

Roc called for several security teams as he and Shell ran for the turbo lifts.

Nemo stood staring at the screen, cursing himself for not being on top of the situation like he should have been. He wondered what they would find on board the Beacon.

Captain: Grayfoot, start scanning the sector for the DRAKE and the INTREPID, they should be out here. I want to know what's happened to them. And alert Starfleet Command, I want at least another ship out here, now.

Starfleet Academy
Stardate 2070.11.12

Julie sat at her console checking her mail. Dan, Dan, David, Tom, Nancy. "Oh, good, Nancy answered me." She deleted the notes from the guys and quickly read Nancy's answer. "Yes, will meet you at Tippy's tonight, bring Jess.

Great, the three of them together again, it had been ages since Julie and her sister Jess had seen their cousin Nancy. They were at Starfleet Academy and she was at Oxford, but she was in San Fran for a few days visiting family and she wanted to get together before she headed back to England.

Jess came bouncing into the room. "What's going on, sis?"

"Nancy just mailed, she wants to meet at Tippy's tonight."

"Great. Any other messages?"

Julie frowned, "Just a bunch of notes from those guys we met at Freshman orientation."

"How cute."

Julie looked at her sister with a deeper frown. "I knew we shouldn't have volunteered to help with that. Jess, they're boys."

Jess sat next to her twin sister. "I know, but I had fun. What else have we received?"

Julie scrolled down the list of incoming messages utill she found one she didn't expect. "Here's one from dad."

Jess stared at the screen. "What's going on with him now?"

"They're scheduled to leave in two days. Let's see what he has to say. 'Hello sweethearts. Sorry to make this so short but we just received orders to depart 6 hours early. Starfleet has lost contact with two ships and a third in that sector has sent out a distress call. Even though we're not ready, we have to go. Take care of each other, I'll send another note when I get the chance. Study hard, I expect to get good reports from your professors.

'I love you, and I miss you both terribly.

'The Old Man.'"

"Had to leave early, that's not good." Jess leaned back in her chair. "Wonder what happened?"

"He didn't say, and he shouldn't. Until Starfleet knows what happened to those three ships they won't say a word. They wouldn't want to upset the families."

"I was wanting to go see him before he took off."

"So did I. Oh well, we'll see him when he gets back. We better get ready to meet Nancy."

Jess stood up and headed for the shower. Julie sat and reread the message, hoping to find something inbetween the lines.

Shell, Roc, and the rest of the boarding party transport down to the bridge of the Beacon, phasers set to stun and ready. The ship is filled with smoke, consoles are blinking on and off. It looks like a major battle took place in here.

But what?

Shell turns to Roc.

Shell: Are you picking up any life signs?

Roc looks at her nervously and shakes his head.

Roc: It's weird... I'm picking up something faint, but it's masked. I can't get a clear reading.

Shell: What would cause that?

Roc: Well, it looks like there was some type of explosion on board... If it was a bomb, they could have also released a gas that would keep our scanners from working properly...

Shell: So you're saying it looks like sabotage.

Roc looks at his scanner and furrows his eyebrows, confused.

Roc: Maybe...

Shell: MAYBE? Kid, I need ANSWERS. Not guesses. I only took you with us because the Captain ordered me to do so. Don't make me regret it.

Roc looks at her, shaken.

Roc: Sorry sir... What I meant was... There could be another reason why the life signs are faint and I can't pick up anything clearly.

Shell: Which IS?

Roc: They could be hiding behind some type of shielding... If they were running from someone and didn't want to be detected... There are definitely humanoids here. But I can't tell you how many or where they are.

Shell: OK. I want two people down at engineering, and two others scanning the corridors for signs of life. Someone's here, and we're not leaving until we find out who. But keep your phasers ready. I don't plan on losing anyone during my first away mission for the captain. I have enough of a reputation already.

The four team members hurry off, leaving Roc and Shell alone on the bridge.

Shell: Something just doesn't make sense...

Suddenly, the doors from the turbo lift open. Shell draws her phaser. Someone walks through, confident, head-held high.

Shell: STOP!

The figure pauses, not speaking.

Shell: Step forward where we can see you.

The figure steps into the light... It's Captain Carroll. Her hair is slightly mussed, but she otherwise looks fine.

Carroll: Put your phaser down, Commander. That's an order.

Shell lowers her phaser.

Shell: I was told you were injured.

Carroll: And you believe everything a Romulan tells you?

Shell: What happened?

Carroll: It was an equipment malfunction. It spread before we could stop it. Nothing major.

Shell: Where's the rest of your crew?

Carroll: The Drake and Intrepid already took them all. I wanted to stay behind with my ship until...

She touches her captain's chair and her expression grows somber.

Carroll: I guess she's gone. A pity.

Shell: We need to take you back to the Debit Card and get you checked out, Captain.

Carroll: Call your team back here and we'll go. There's nothing more to see.

Roc looks up nervously, and coughs. Shell turns to him, slightly annoyed.

Shell: Yes?

Roc: Umm... Captain, is there anyone else we should be taking back with us?

The Captain shakes her head.

Carroll: No, I'm the last one left.

Shell speaks into her comm link.

Shell: I need everyone back to the bridge immediately. We're heading back.

Roc touches Shell's elbow.

Rock: Sir, may I speak to you for a moment?

Shell nods. He pulls her aside, out of range of the Captain's hearing.

Roc: The Captain's lying.

Shell widens her eyes at that.

Shell: That's a pretty big claim to make there. You better watch where you're stepping.

Roc: No, you don't understand. She's not the last one here. I can't pinpoint where, but there are other life signals on this ship. There are other people still here.

Shell pauses, staring at Roc's scanner for a moment.

Carroll: Commander, is something wrong?

The turbolift doors open and the other 4 team members enter the bridge.

Shell smiles.

Shell: Nothing Captain. Everything's fine. We're glad you're safe.

She speaks into her comm link.

Shell: Debit Card, six to beam back.

Captain Carroll looks at her confused.

Carroll: Six? But there's seven of us.

Shell nods.

Shell: That's right. You're all going back. I'm staying for awhile.

Before the Captain can respond, the transporter signal kicks in and the group is whisked back to the Debit Card, leaving Shell alone.

Back on the USS Debit Card, Kanani is relaxing in her quaters, reading a good book. The ship has been on red alert and Ten Forward closes down during the course of the red alert. All of a sudden, a feeling comes over her. Something is wrong. She can sense something wrong but can't quite pinpoint the reason why. She begins to fidget in her chair and her breathing becomes stronger. Is she getting sick? A few minutes passes and she is still not feeling too well. She resists the urge to go to sickbay and just shakes it off.

Half grumbling to himself, half growling softly, Markav sits at his post. Sleep came to him, but it wasn't really good sleep. Now, with the away team on the Beacon, he just gets to babysit the comm station. Then again, that was his job.

Monitoring the different channels on automatic, he kept the his focus on the away team. Why all of this static? This interference is... Something doesn't seem right... Turning to his left, he consults his science and tactical station.
Gottal love double duty. Markav says to himself.

As he starts the analysis of the Beacon, he turns back to his comm station and does a quick diagnositic. Shortly... No problems there... To the Captain:
Sir... I'm getting an awful amount of static for the distance we are from the Beacon. I just did a quick diagnostic of my comm system, and that's not it. Consults his science and tactical systems while Captian Nemo walks up to him.

Captian Nemo: Explain, Lt. Greyfoot.

Markav: Sir, I can't tell for sure if it's something coming from the Beacon, around it, or both. I also can't tell, yet, if it's something natural or artifical. It could be something from an explosion or sabatoge, or it could be something else.

The turbo lift door opens and Abasador Turnell enters the bridge, with an armed secuirty detail providing escort/protection.

Markav, having heard him enter, leans over: Ambassador! We could rrrgggghhhh really use your guidance with this.

As Ambassador Turnell walks over to where Markav and Captain Nemo are at, Commander Shell says over the comm system in Markav's ear: Commander Shell to the Debit Card, we found the Beacon's Captain... As Markav relays that, he hears.. Commander Shell to transporter room, six to beam up.

Markav: Sir, all of the boarding party, except Commander Shell, are back aboard the Debit Card.

Amabassador takes a long look at the read out of the science and tactical station, and his expression starts to become pale, even for a Romulan.

Commander Shell is alone. The console lights are blinking, and darkness seems to envelope the bridge. It would be almost eerie - if you were the type of person who got creeped out easily. Lelandra Shell is not.

Shell (under her breath): Whoever you are, you can't hide forever.

She peers at her scanner. Nothing's changed. It's still reading life signs, but nothing more - no indication of what type, how many, or where.

She holds her phaser out, ready for the slightest danger. Her senses are on high alert. But she knows this search is going to take more than her typical skills. She closes her eyes for a moment, taking in the surroundings, and takes a deep breath.

When she opens her eyes, they seem to almost glow. She looks at her scanner again - still nothing useful.

Shell: Warotslet mildeken lorical!

With annoyance, she pockets the scanner and hurries across the bridge, her feet seeming to scarcely touch the ground as she walks. She doesn't make a sound as she heads to the nearest Jeffries Tube.

Captain: Lt. find out what is causing the interferance, run every test you can think of and then make up some tests, just find out what's wrong.

Lt. Grayfoot: Sir, all of the boarding party, except Commander Shell, are back aboard the Debit Card.

Captain: Bridge to Lt. Roc. Report.

Lt. Roc: Sir, we have Captain Carroll, with us, the commander sent us back, with instructions to escort the captain to Sick Bay.

Captain: Lt. have two of your men escort the captain to sick bay, I want the rest of your team to return to the BEACON. Nemo to Shell.

Shell: Shell here, Captain.

Captain: What do you think you are doing sending the away team back and staying on board by yourself?

Shell: It was necessary, Captain, the commander of the Beacon didn't seem to be herself and we were getting some strange reading from our tri-corders.

Captain: That's why you keep a team with you, to investigate and get answers quickly.

Shell: Captain Carroll was the one who ordered the away team back to the Debit Card. Besides, I can get the answers you need.

Captain: That wasn't what I ordered, I'm your Captain, not Carroll. I've sent the away team back. Now, do your job the way you were trained to do the job. I want answers and I want them quickly. Nemo out. Ambassador, will you accompany me to sick bay to check on Captain Carroll?

Turnel: Of course, Captain.

In Sick bay Dr. RAM was examining Captain Carroll when Nemo, Turnel, and another security team entered. Captain Carroll was quietly sitting on the examination table while RAM ran a scanner around her head.
Captain: Captain Carroll, how are you.

RAM: The Captain is functioning within normal perameters.

Carroll: I'm fine, Adam.

Captain: What happened to your ship and crew?

Carroll: I'm not sure, there was an explosion.

Captain: There were two Romulan War Birds surrounding your ship, what were they doing there?

Carroll: There were, I don't remember them.

RAM: Captain Nemo, may I have a word with you in private?

Captain: Of course Dr., excuse me Captain.

RAM leads Nemo to his office and turns on a computer display.

Captain: What is it doctor?

RAM: The Commander of the BEACON is not who she seems to be.

Captain: What do you mean?

RAM: If you will observe, these brainwave patterns of the Captain that are on file with Starfleet medical do not match with the brain wave patterns I just took from our Captain Carroll.

Captain: What are you implying, Dr.?

RAM: I am not implying anything, Captain, I am stating that this person we have in our sickbay is not Captain Carroll.

Before the Captain could respond, there was a loud yell, then a crash eminating from Sick Bay. Nemo and RAM ran out of RAM's office to see Carroll, fighting with Turnel, two security guards were trying to pull Carroll off of the Ambassador and one nurse lay unconscious on the ground. Suddenly Carroll threw off the two guards and pushed Turnel across the room. Nemo saw a look in her eyes he had never seen before. Just as she started to make a move towards him and the doctor, Nemo pointed his phaser at her and fired. The stun setting only knocked her back a few feet. She stood straight up and smiled. The two security men had pulled out their phasers.

Captain: Set them to heavy stun. Fire.

The three phas
