If memory serves, there was a retail employee killed the same way last year. So not worth it. In fact, I completely fail to understand why anyone lines up early on "Black Friday" just to save a little money on something they don't need. But that's just me.

That is the most horrendous thing I have ever heard. Are people so greedy and selfish that they are going to get their way no matter what it costs others?? I am so glad I never, ever shop on this weekend. There is nothing I want badly enough to put up with rude and selfish people on a scale like that. No thanks.

Um...apparently. There are stories every year of workers and shoppers being trampled, although they generally don't die. It's just stupid.

My husband and I were just talking about this, and we can't understand what gets into the minds of people. How can greed overtake people this way? Maybe a few people, but a collective group? This is obscene.
I can't imagine. Even here on boxing day, I've seen tons of overnight lineups, but when the doors open people have always behaved in a civil manner.
And it's not even that the man opened the doors and there was a rush of people, these people took the doors off of the hinges. Hey I would have liked a $128 Blu-Ray player but it's not worth risking my life.

I worked(14yrs ago) for a department store chain as a warehouse/maintenance man and one of my duties was to open the doors, I hated the holiday season, it always amazed me how rude people could be. Whichever door had the most people waiting outside it was the last one to be opened.
My Prayers go out to the families affected by this tragedy.

Very sad.
One of the many reasons my family does all they can to avoid shopping these after Thanksgiving days.

It is mob mentality. About thirty years ago, several concert goers where killed in Cincinatti at a Who concert in a mad rush for in a rush for seats at festival-seating concert,

This reminds me of Krzyzewskiville that pops up in Durham this time of the year, and even "big" concerts (re: Kenny Chesney, who sold out seven consecutive Colonial Life Arena concerts (18,000) , forcing him to Williams-Brice where his sellout streak ended with a 50,000 (parts of stadium closed) seat venue) where people camp out to hopefully obtain tickets to a big event. People want those tickets to these hard to find events they will sleep outside the parking lot of the venue hoping to buy tickets to the hard-to-find concert or the game.
And this isn't confined to Black Friday. Any time a major pop star releases a mega-album, a huge new video gaming system, or the big toy is up for grabs, the stores will now do a Midnight Madness gimmick and people will come in at an unusually dark hour to buy the item.
Sadly, we had two fatalities today at that Walmart store. Somehow, this should result in criminal charges but they are not doing so. I remember at the Cooper River Bridge Run XXVII, a runner suffered cardiac arrest on the Pearman, and I immediately stopped to see if anything could be done (the family was there; we prayed for him on-site), but it was too late; that runner later died. Somehow, the sensitivity of having two deaths today at the Walmart should be a warning sign that we have lost respect of human life.
But of course, it seems with the Obama Era, the sanctity of human life is no longer there (witness his request for FOCA, which would eliminate all abortion restrictions passed in 30 years; this would legalise infanticide). It seems this is a metaphor about the loss of the preciousness of human life when we killed two people today in a store, and emotionally scarred the baby's mother permanently.

Unbelievable! Come on, people- it's just stuff! For folks to act with such callous disregard for others is disheartening to say the least. Why was there no security or law enforcement there to manage the crowd so that things did not get out of hand?
And if the families of the man and unborn child who were killed try to sue, it's a sure bet Wal-mart will counter-sue and keep them in financial ruins for the next decade.
Greed, violence, unruly mobs fighting over junk and trampling people underfoot... ah, the commercialization of Christmas. The love of bling has become the reason for the season.

They call them "doorbuster" specials and I think the retailers are completely responsible. They have 10 or 15 of some item for sale a little cheaper and that is what causes all this. They chould STOP IT. Just have their regular sale prices. People will still buy what they want or need.
This is just really bad. We don't need the govt to regulate this, the retailers need to stop this on their own.

WOW - we had people lined up at our store this morning, but no one trying to trample another - that's outrageous. So very sad for his family and for the pg woman - I also read that she and baby were ok.

Each store does this different. I got to my local Wal-Mart today later than I wanted to at about 4:30am to get my kids the Holy Grail of all Christmas Presents this year. The doors were already opened and people were already inside. They had all of the items in pallets or stacks around the store. You had to make a choice what you really wanted first and go "camp it". There were 2 associates near every pallet of stuff and at 5:00 they opened it up and let people take it. Everything was neat and orderly and absolutely incredible. I have never seen a more organized, safe and professional way of doing it ever. The only exception was the laptops and the Wii's which you had to get in line for and even the line was in an out of the way crazy place so you couldn't have rushed that one either.
There was no rush because people were let in early and there was no fear like at other stores I have done over the years where you stand outside and the first 10 people in line have the 5 best things in the ad walking by you before you get in. I was incredibly impressed.

I don't get why people are lining up to buy $798 plasma screen TVs in such a bad economy, anyway. That's disgusting.
