Having formerly worked for a large discount department store chain catching shoplifters, this would work great for some people, though some shoplifters tend to be sue-happy.

It's amazing the type of people that do shoplift. I do know of one story where the judge made the person stand in front of the store they shoplifted from holding a sign that said they stole from that store. That might work too.

Other shoplifters make a living out of it, and would only move on to somewhere else.

And herein lies the power of the lawsuit. Cities, counties and yes, even shopping malls will succumb to fear of being sued and this "deterrent" will stop.

Rami is right they have no shame. Cut off a finger or two and if they continue maybe hand. Pain is often a great deterent to crime.

What about white collar crime, how should we deter that (ie: see post 49). Or does your post only apply to blue collar criminals?
