I have had so many exams, and so much poking and prodding in that area even before having a baby that I am not really uncomfortable with them anymore.

We I lived in IN, our family doctor was also a member of our church. I just didn't feel right about seeing him for gyn appointments.

LOL, I wouldn't either.... when my dad was active duty military, we didn't exactly get a choice in those things, and my mom DID have to have that exam with a (military) doctor who also went to our church..she said she always avoided him after that.

I expected more women to say they prefer a woman OBGYN because, either women tend to know women's bodies better or maybe women felt uncomfortable with a male in such a private.......area especially married women. Honestly, it's done and over so quickly I don't even think about that. Knowing that I'm with someone competent makes me more comfortable than the gender of the person. When I needed a specialist GYN I saw one of the best in the province. When I needed an OB I saw the best in the hospital. Both were male. My family doc does my regular checkups and he is male. I asked my husband once if it bothered him that they were all male. As far as he is concerned this is something medical so he doesn't care one bit, as long as I'm getting good care.

I think I felt the same was as Christine. Now I want my daughter's first pelvic and breast exam to be done by their female family practice doctor. When they are older, obviously they will choose for themselves. Blessings, Garsy

I chose a woman for my first exam (I was 26 and single) for the reasons some have mentioned: modesty, a woman would be able to relate, would be more understanding, etc. Boy, was I WRONG. It was a very very bad experience. I didn't go back for another gyn checkup until shortly before my wedding about 6 years later. This time, I went to a male gyn who was recommended by trusted friends. I just love him. He is so kind and gentle and a wonderful Christian. He expressed his support that we were waiting until marriage, and revealed that he and his wife had done the same. He is awesome. He works very quickly to get the most unpleasant part of the exam overwith as soon as possible. And since he always has a female nurse in the room, the modesty thing really isn't an issue. He is always very respectful and entirely appropriate, which is something I could not say about the woman gyn I saw. I won't go so far to say that all female doctors are cold and all male doctors are better, but in my experience with these particular people, it was true.

ORIGINAL: truthrevealed I'm somewhat surprised by the responses. I agree that gender isn't as important as knowledge, gentleness etc. but for some reason I expected more women to say they prefer a woman OBGYN because, either women tend to know women's bodies better or maybe women felt uncomfortable with a male in such a private.......area especially married women. I do believe that competency trumps gender though and you can find.......* knuckleheads* of any gender . Honestly, I felt this way BEFORE marriage. I even was hesitant a little while into our marriage to see a male ob/gyn. Then I needed surgery, and my doctor was recommending something that I wasn't comfortable with. I sought out a 2nd opinion. Several of my friends recommended the same male ob/gyn. I did some research on him, and he had/has fantastic feedback, and was awarded things for research, and awards from other doctors, etc... He came HIGHLY recommended. =) I saw him in person, and before I was even really a patient, he took his time with me, really and truly listened to me, respected me, and gave his expert opinion. (which was different from my 1st doc) After much prayer and thought we went with him as my ob/gyn and left the other practice. I have never once regretted that move. He is a fantastic doctor. He prayed with David and I before my surgery. I feel that he genuinely cares for me. He has a great deal of knowledge, and he is very gentle during exams... not to mention quick. I've had 3 ob/gyn doctors. 1st... female, kind and not very gentle 2nd... female, not so kind and not gentle with feelings or during exams 3rd.. male, wouldn't trade him for anything!

My primary OBGYN is a male, but his associate is a woman. I prefer her for normal pelvic exams and when I have questions and nothing is really wrong. But, when I had to have my c-sections, and if I ever have anything serious, I prefer him, hands down. He is a Christian and has an amazing record and and reputation in our town. I feel completely comfortable with his skill as a diagnostician and a surgeon.

After a while... and even before a while's passed, you get over the fact that you're looking at "privates." Of course, there are some crooked male ob/gyn's, but honestly, in that profession, and other medically-based professions, a body is a body is a body, and private parts are just like the other parts. I'm interested in urology and gynecology (/obstetrics); all the time I have some kind of pictures/drawings of male parts, and have to deal with them IRL as well. It's just routine; no big deal. <shrugs> I do know some women who think male ob/gyn's have something wrong with them for being in that profession, but aside from the ones who do have issues, it's not that big of a deal to them.

It is a law. There ALWAYS has to be someone else in the room other than the one doing the examination. The first time I was ever examined by a OB/GYN was when I was 17, pregnant, and in the ER from dehydration caused by my pregnancy. The strange female doctor walked up to me and said, "I need to examine you now." *shrug* Okay...no biggie...until she told me to take off my panties. That was the most horrible thing I went through and I still get shivers when I think about how awful she was. After that I primarily saw women but the one male I had I loooooved. He was patient, and kind, and sweet, and just...wonderful. He never blew off my symptoms, always answered my questions, and was just really good with such a young mom. Seeing women was never a choice; I just always went to health departments for my exams and they always had women there. *shrug*

When I had major female issues after having my oldest son (was stitched up too much), I ended up going to the ER. Well, the emerg physician had to examine me, cut those stitches, and restitch me properly. Painful, but no biggie. Well, that same physician is also a homeschooler, so I interact with he and his family on a weekly basis. Now *that* makes for some awkwardness in a social setting ....

This probably going to crack some of you up. . .but oh well. I prefer a male. My experience with women has been they think since they own a vagina too, then they are somehow more astute or better. Truth is, they're often less gentle. I think men tend to be gentler BECAUSE they don't have vaginas. Those who are married understand it takes a tender touch to "open the flower" with their wives, and have seemed to bring that into practice too. Every male GYN I've ever had has used a warmer for the spec. NO female ever has. Honestly. . .when I interview a new OB/GYN? I look at their hands. If they got huge hands - male or female - it's a NO WAY JOSE.

I've had exams by three females. One awful, one so-so, one great. The last one was the only one that was an actual OB. At first gender made a difference, but now not so much. There has never been anyone else in the room with any of my exams (by a female). There was a female nurse assistant when I had my HSG (it involves similar "steps" as an exam) the radiologist doing the procedure was male. My female OB delivered my baby, there was a male GP there to take Isaac once he was born, the was the only male (other than hubby in the room), I didnt care or really notice he was there, I had bigger things on my mind.

" I expected more women to say they prefer a woman OBGYN because, either women tend to know women's bodies better or maybe women felt uncomfortable with a male in such a private area" I go to a regular family doctor for all *those* tests. I chose a female doctor for the above reasons. I have had two different female doctors, and I like them both. My husband also prefers me to see a female doctor. I have seen males for out of the ordinary things, but I just feel more comfortable with females.

If they got huge hands - male or female - it's a NO WAY JOSE. I kind of have the same reasoning with the above part. (Hand size doesn't matter to me though. ) I think the way the females (that I have seen) have basically manhandled me has something to do with the fact that we're "alike." I love the way the male gyn's I go to treat me as far as exams and the fact that they can't do me like other patients (can't get paps, etc)... but I wish they'd give me more credit for my own medical knowledge. :) Sex of doctors isn't important, but I wish people wouldn't have the misconception that male doctors who deal with gynecology all day have issues to have wanted to go into that field. (I know no one here thinks that, but a friend of a friend goes on and on about how male gynecologists must be perverted sickos, which goes to show that she doesn't try to understand that there are different ways of "seeing" things.)
