A couple years back I found snowpants at Meijer's, in January for, I think, about $5 or $6 a pair, but I saw some at Walmart today but didn't get a chance to get over and look at the prices or anything. They even had PINK! I'm just afraid we are going to have to look into much larger sizes and such for my Aryn, and I don't know of a single place that sells winter gear reasonably priced in Jr. sizes. I'm thinking boots will be easier to find. I should have went and looked at the boots, while we were there but I didn't do that either. Blessings, Garsy

garsy--I found a pair of snow pants in kids size 18. Yah, it was January and they were clearing out winter gear. I snatched up 3 or 4 pairs in sizes that I knew my guys would grow into. One of the kids looked at the size 18 and said taht they were so big they would fit me. You know, you are right!!! I now have a pair of snow pants! Don't forget thrift stores. It may take a couple trips, but I've found snow pants several times.

Although it can be more expensive you can always do catalog orders. Lands' End and LLBean do have quality outerwear for children. It works best if you are near an outlet store of theirs! Also keep a frequent check on their sale pages, especially for off season merchandise.

Consecrated--you'll have to tell me which thift store! I'm a triathlete and spend half my life in the winter in the fishbowl (also known as the swimming pool). Chlorine is soooo hard on swim suits! I try to stock up on suits in the summer. However, come February and March, all of 'em seem to be on their last leg, yet I can't find swim suits anywhere!

It was Goodwill in Terre Haute. They had a whole rack of them!

Target carried snow pants. That is where I have always gotten my snow gear.

It's funny, when I clicked on this thread my husband came up behind me and asked me if I started it! We got snow pants at Target this year. Usually we do what Donna does (Jan/Feb clearance) but somehow this year DS1 ripped out the entire bottom of his snowpants in March or April. Yes, we had snow then. We also got him boots there. I won't buy any new boots until snow season starts, simply because shoe sizes change so quickly around here. Dh and I love our Muck's but the boys won't get any until their feet stop growing. This year our trouble was finding durable coats. We've bought London Fog and gone through 2-3 coats a year with ripped or jammed zippers. We've bought Walmart and Target and just not found them warm enough (or the shell rips easily). We honestly went to 10 stores this year looking for some kind of coat which assured some quality without costing over $100. It's hard to tell if a coat from Vietnam or China really has any insulation or padding or whether it's plastic shell with a bit of microfleece inside. Finally we went to Kohls and they had a big sale on Columbia--50% off retail price. I don't mind investing a little bit because we recycle this stuff through 4 boys (if it survives that long) but some of these prices are crazy. It's sad when it's cheaper to buy 4 cheap coats every year then 1 expensive coat and pass it down.

The only piece of clothing I ever bought there was a winter coat I had in high school. I hated it at the time, because it was ugly and not a name brand (and only $40, IIRC), but it was amazingly warm. I once walked a mile and a half home from a friends house in a blizzard w/ nothing but a t-shirt on underneath it and I remember dripping with sweat when I got inside. Granted, that was 13 years ago... -Dan.

I've never heard of BJ's either. Coats we don't usually have a problem with--the kids are always getting hand-me-downs for coats. They get some snow pants for hand-me downs and occasionally will get a pair of snow boots, but they generally aren't in great condition. I haven't seen too many shoes that last being handed down too much.

I was going to recommend Costco, too. They usually have some good deals on kids' coats, boots, and gloves. I can't recall seeing snowpants there, though. My other big resource is Freecycle. There's always someone out there whose kid just outgrew something that will fit my kid!

Auben, I would buy coats from Landsend or LL Bean, both places have lifetime warranties on their products so if it rips or tears you can send it in for a replacement. There are a couple items we ALWAYS buy from them- backpacks, snow gear, and rugs.

I scored a few pairs of snowpants earlier in the season at the thrift store. I don't seem to have a problem finding boots and snow gear for the kids. The current issue is finding outdoor coveralls for my oldest. They have them in kids sizes, which just aren't shaped right for a young woman and leave lots of baggy fabric around her midsection, and mens sizes, which are just rediculous on a 5'3" size 6 female. She does the majority of the farm chores and would like coveralls as opposed to bibs and coat, which is just too bulky for her to comfortably work in. We've checked the Carhartt site and TSC and they just don't make 'em.
