We just spent the last several hours trying to find good winter things for the kids. Some of them had hand-me-downs from the older kids, but one of them needed a snowsuit and two of them needed snow boots. We started by going to Walmart, and they didn't have any snowsuits, and hardly any selection of snow boots. They had snow boots for children, but my older girls don't wear children's sizes anymore and they didn't have any ladies' snow boots. There were soft leathery boots, not waterproof, and there were these boots with plastic around the foot area and soft cloth on top, again, not waterproof, and there were rain boots. Do they think kids over the age of 8 don't play in the snow?
So we went to Rural King and bought Sarah a pair of coveralls--$34! They didn't have snow boots, either. We went to Boot City after that, and found one style of kids' snow boots, but they were expensive, so we went back to Walmart and bought rain boots for them. At least their feet will be dry.
Has anyone else had trouble finding snow things for their kids? Where do you buy snowsuits and snow boots? Or do places not sell them anymore? Do kids not go out and play in the snow these days? I am so frustrated that I can't find what I am looking for!

I tend to buy like THIS Rubber at the foot and then leather around the ankles. If you treat it with waterproof stuff they are fine. It's what I wore in college in western NY and what my kids have. Of course DD1 will be able to wear mine this year.
I find that they are hard to find in women's sizes but not for men.
ETA: I just looked and they do have winter boots for women too.

The one on the far left wouldn't be too bad, although it doesn't look like it's made for play. The one in the middle is high heeled, and the other one doesn't look water proof. $35 each is a little much for our budget, too.

I feel your pain Lisa!
We had snow on the ground here this morning and the kids had to find all the gear for school today. My eldest has out grown her snowboots so she is going to end up wearing my winter boots til we can find her some. I always go to the boys department for snowpants tho. Black fits for both boys and girls, and I can pass them down through all of the kids. Aryn needs snowpants this year as we couldn't find anything for Ty last year.

We buy boots like the ones Zoebob linked to until their feet stop growing. I can usually find that style at Wal Mart for around $25. Once their feet stop growing, we graduate to THESE. They are pricey - $85 - but we have found they last a good 5 years before they need to be replaced. They are probably overkill for those who don't live on a farm in the snow belt of PA, but they work well for us.

If you lock in any creature, from rats to chickens to pigs to people, 10 to 30 or more in a box and force feed them you'll create little monsters. Confinement Education School Operations (CESOs) just don't compare to naturally pastured free-ranged kids.

Wal-Mart's weird - sometimes they'll have something, other times they don't. They're not about consistency; they're about maximizing profit and if a particular item didn't sell last year... I don't count on them to stock anything in particular, even things like basic computer or a/v cables that should be in every electronics dept.
I'd try a sporting goods store like Dick's, Gander Mtn, Cabella's, Bass Pro, etc.

We do have a Gander Mountain here. We didn't think to try there.
If Walmart only stocks things that sell, why aren't snowpants and snowboots selling? I've always considered that a necessity.

I haven't bought snowboots at Walmart in years because the quality was not good enough for what we need living in snow country. If they had good quality, warm and waterproof boots, I'd have bought them there. I suspect I'm not the only one with this problem around here.
Our Walmart always has more snowpants than they ever sell. No idea why.

Well, maybe your location is why they sell more snow things at Walmart up there than they do here in Southern Indiana. We still get snow here, too, though, and my kids will play outside as long as I'll let them. If they don't have snow pants, they'll come in soaked and cold and then beg to go outside.

Ugh, my problem is there's too much winter stuff in the stores. But "winter stuff" to us in Florida means they've got the sweaters and long sleeve shirts out. We wear that stuff maybe a couple weeks total so I always wonder why we have to have it all over the stores for months. I was buying clothes for the kids for Christmas and I certainly don't want that stuff so I was struggling to find stuff they can actually wear more than a few times. The good thing is, whatever you can find that's from spring or summer is way marked down by now! :-)
Y'all can keep the snowboots!

Lands End Outlet usually has all of your snow fund needs around here. Target and Walmart have snowpants. I use to buy a few pairs when the kids were younger. I bought dd who wears ladies sizes, snow pants at Dicks Sporting goods.

What was last winter like? Here in Boston, we had a couple storms, but overall it was fairly mild IIRC.
Also, ski shops should have what you're looking for. While they're generally rather pricey, the stuff they sell is usually of excellent quality. WM-grade stuff has gotten better over the years, but IMO apparel designed for skiers & snowboarders has always been tailored/cut better than cheaper mass-market stuff. It's nice being able to lift your arms w/o having your coat lift up and expose your stomach or have the sleeves slide half-way up to your elbows. Columbia and a few other brands are cut that way, too, and are easier to find.
If you can hold out until the clearance sales show up, you might be able to find some good deals. Otherwise, I'd check ebay.

I'm not really sure what it was like around here last year. We're further south than we were, but not that much further south. Only like 150 miles. Where we were last year we had a very cold winter.

January is not halfway through winter here. We've been known to have snowstorms on Mother's Day.
Last year, I bought my oldest snow boots in October and he had outgrown them and needed new ones by January.

Here in Maine warm boots are a must! My children go out to recess everyday that it is more seventeen degrees - thirty minutes at that temperature and their feet would freeze, if their boots aren't a good quality. We buy are winter gear at L.L. Bean, it is more expensive, but the quality does pay off. There boots range from $30 to $80 and come with a quality guarantee, if they don't last the season you can take them back for a new pair. Same thing applies for mail orders.
We are already wearing our "warm gear" to school. It has been hovering around twenty degree's each morning.  I'm not ready for winter yet!

Hope I won't get TOSed for "advertising", but I don't see this as anything different than talking about WalMart, LLBean, and the like...
For warm hats, I've found a guy that does custom fleece. www.foxwear.net I've ordered custom clothing from him for my oldest son who is tall and thin and can't wear "off the rack" pants. I just ordered hats from him and don't have them yet, but if the quality is anything like his other stuff, I know it will be great. You go to his website, select the weight of fabric (for kids play hats, I'd go with the heavyweight), select the color, then call and order it. You will most likely talk with Lou, the owner. His hats come with or without ear flaps! Oh, and each hat is only $5 and you pay actual shipping which for fleece is cheap! I placed my first order on a Friday and had my order on Monday.

Awesome, Hazel! I'm seriously thinking of getting hats with ear flaps for my three big kids.
It's not advertising because it is applicable to the thread and isn't it's own thread.
