Personally, I don't understand why we lock people up for non-violent crimes; I think reparative justice makes much more sense, and happens to be Biblical as well.

For clarification, I was referring to his spin about the prospect of being found not guilty had he gone to trial. Not that he doesn't believe it himself. So denial may be a better term than spin.

Actually I think it's a matter of public record that Special Prosecutor Jaworski had offered to plea him down to a misdemeanor with the opportunity for no jail time, and instead he felt, as a matter of personal integrity, that he needed to plead guilty to obstruction of justice, a much more serious charge, and for which he recieved the maximum jail time. I really don't know of anyone else (especially in regard to charges in Washington politics) who has ever done anything like this.

I stand corrected. Here's some of the mindset of Mr. Colson:

Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein learns of White House aide Charles Colson’s plan to burglarize the Brookings Institute (see June 30-July 1, 1971 and June 1974), and, alarmingly, of Colson’s plans to actually firebomb the building. An associate of former White House counsel John Dean tells Bernstein that Colson did not want to just burglarize the Institute: “Chuck Colson wanted to rub two sticks together.”

Maybe he preferred "torch". Here is a photo of Colson chatting up Henry Kissinger.

This is in fact what I have said also. I only think we should lock up violent offenders. And most drug crimes should just be taken off the books, they're stupid.

I once heard G.Gordon Liddy, on his radio show, saying of Colson, that if he worked for Jesus Christ like he worked for Nixon, the world would be turned upside-down.
