Holiday? What holidays?

This has been the worst year ever. The only thing I can think of to be thankful for --- and Canadian Thanksgiving comes in October -- is that it is nearly over.

I think this may be the worst holiday shopping season in my lifetime. Some retailers depend on the Christmas season for 50 percent of their annual revenue. If that falls short this year, there may well be more closings and layoffs in January.

I talked to four people in retail last week and their expectations ranged from pessimistic to downright terrified.

I think your sentiment is fairly accurate. This year has been a terrible year for the American People, especially those on Main Street where people are struggling to make ends meet. My heart goes out to them. With that said, we can still be grateful for our families, this beautiful country we call America, and our religious freedom which no one can take away from us.

I do not know one single person who has been laid off or face severe economic trouble.

The industry I work in is entertainment related and so far, though we have slowed down, no one has been laid off.....but we have been slow not so much by the economy but by expansion.

The third shift was created 6 years ago. I was the first employee to do that. When we started it, I would be down for months, cleaning, because of a lack of work.

That was when we had one press running on third shift. Now we have two presses running, with extra help and we have not shut down to clean at all this year.

I make tickets...so...when you are upset over the economy, please...go to a movie or an event....

FDR said it best...you have nothing to fear but fear itself. In the late 90's we were a family of four living on a net of 13,000 dollars a year. It can be done. Don't fear. Don't let the gloom and doom of the party in control force you to give up your freedoms for a measure of security.

There are always layoffs. There always will be. Lets remember...a few months ago it was a given we would be paying ten dollars a gallon for gas...where did that go? The same place fear always goes...away.

Fear not...and go to the movies....

I am praying for you. When I read this my first reaction was wow, but then I began to pray and God reminded me of a scripture in Psalms it says "Be still and know that I am God."

This Christmas is not gonna be any different for me. I have never really wanted extravagant things and don't really ask for anything and I don't really give anything. My prayer is that this holiday gets refocused on what's important and that is Christ.

God Bless,

Greg

It's making the holidays MUCH BETTER>

The holidays are about God (Jesus).

With less money to spend and time to waste "shopping" and "decorating" and "dressing up" and "parties to attend or throw" we are going to be more focued than ever on the "reason for the holidays" and that is always a GREAT GREAT THING!!!!

America has been needing this for a long time now. I believe most of us Christians having been praying for God to bring us back to him and clean out the church for a long time. This is the perfect opportunity for Christians to allow the light of Christ to shine though us.

The lost world if full of fear. The Christian is full of joy, hope, peace and we know that God "is" working all this out to our good. Our lights will shine brighter than ever.

Most of my friends feel like I do during this economic turn down. That we are so extremely blessed and have much to be thankful for. (that is what both my poor and wealthy friends believe --- it has NOTHING to do with money or wealth) The wealth got in the "way" of our seeing just how blessed and fortunate we truly are.

Ours is pretty much going to be the way it has always been...
Special advent celebrations for the weeks leading up to Christmas Day...passing out food baskets for needy families in the community, serving at the soup kitchen...hunger never takes a holiday, but for some reason the number of volunteers always picks up a little...lots of hours spent practicing for the Adult and Childrens choir and Christmas program... baking cookies and going caroling, going out to find that perfect tree and waiting until the kids are all there to help decorate it...
Candlelight Communion on Christmas Eve (one of my absolute fav. parts of CHRISTMAS) 3 or 4 vanloads full of family going out to see Christmas lights later that night...

we are not into spending a lot of money on material gifts so the economy won't affect us much at all....

As for feeling something unique---yes, more grandchildren to celebrate, and extra time for a visit with them and for the nation as a whole I truly feel we are beginning to reap all the seeds of greed that has been sown for so long.

I remember years ago when people were building up credit cards en masse never thinking a day of accountability would come, but it is here nonetheless.

It's going to be pretty much the same for us. We're budgeting the same amount on gifts as we have for the past few years, and we'll be going to see our families. The gas prices being so much lower will certainly be nice for that. We might actually get a real tree this year--the transformer melted on our artificial fiber optic one last year.

I agree. I believe our prayers are being answered just not in the manner we expected. In order for us to get focused on God, sometimes He has to move the obstacles from the path.

Friend,

As much as I would like to agree with you, history provides us far too many examples that freedoms --- be they religious, social or otherwise --- can be taken away if they are not exercised and protected with due diligence. I pray this will not be the case in either the US or Canada, but was must not be so naive as to assume it cannot happen.

In theory what you say is true. And perhaps for some there won't be much of a difference.

Jesus was born in a stable, not a palace of royalty. So, yes, life goes on.

However, there are still bills to pay, food and gas to buy, living expenses to be met. All with fewer resources with which to do it. Layoffs are real, hardships are real for some people. It saddens me greatly to not be able to purchase gifts for loved ones. Nor to be able to travel. I'll be alone this holiday season. If things get much worse, Jesus may not be the only one to spend Christmas without a home.

Yes and realize how God provided all they needed right in the nick of time!

Jesus was about 2 years old when Herod wanted him killed. God sent what? Wise men from the east (how in the world would wise men in the east know about Jesus???? We believe long before then when Daniel was in captivity he was teaching the people in the east about the promised Messiah and that was passed down to the other "wise men". Remember Daniel was chief of the "wise men" in his day and time)

God had those men ready and on their way BEFORE Herod began to search out for Jesus and he had for Jesus (his parents) the wealth they would need to go into a foreign land and hide until the death of Herod when it was safe for them to return home.

This is not about "theory" it's about God and what he is already doing for "his children".

As my preacher would say, "Stop the pitty party for yourself and look around you - there are people who "need" you to step up and give of yourself to them". Go do some ministry work during the holidays. That's what many people do even when they have large familes and lots of money.

Doom and gloom.

Ya know, it wasn't long ago that this entire board was in depression over the gas prices...Oh we wills ee ten dollars a gallon by summer....oh I can't afford groceries because of gas prices....

what happened??? Gas is at a three year low!!!

Life is a choice. You can look at it with the gloom and doom this election cycle promoted...or you can live your life without fear.

Matthew 6: 25-34
