Also, I know that plenty of college students manage to get days off so that they can attend classes. No one screams that it may hurt their business.

Yes, and you can bet they were HIRED with that stipulation... They generally work part time and fill in the gaps... That is why no one screams... Accepting a job and later placing demands on the employer is disingenuous...

Most of the people that I know who require a certain day off did make those arrangements prior to being hired. Often times the company changes hands, changes management or just flat out goes back on it's word to the workers.

Roberta: It's a religious conviction also. IMO, you sound like you think people should ignore religious convictions when it comes to their employment.

Your opinion is wrong and I honestly do not see how you are coming to the conclusions you have so far. I have stated twice - and now three times - that it's up to the individual to pursue a career that will NOT conflict with their beliefs.

In other words, I am stating that convictions are too important to be compromised by work, so don't put yourself in a position of compromise to begin with. Very simply put:

If you feel alcohol is sinful, don't work for a beer company. If you require Sundays off, don't work in the industries that require work on Sundays. If you're convicted that the McDonald's uniforms are sinfully unflattering, don't work at McDonalds.

Get it?

And that too is disingenuous. I've experienced personally and heard cases where a prospective employee asks an employer if Sunday work is required (or other availability issues). They usually respond with "well maybe once in a while" and soon enough that turns into every Sunday. And if they ask you once and you generously agree to do it they'll take it as permission to make you work every week. I personally tried to be reasonable and work on Sundays in extreme circumstances but most of the time I flat out refused. I was fortunate that I had enough value to my employer to be able to do that. They certainly were not acting with integrity toward me.

Great...But some here are taking about forcing company to accommodate regardless of making prior arrangements and you agreed with a post that mentioned that... Post 99

If the company changes hands that is something other than it going back on its word... Many times when a company changes hands everything from hours to pay is re-negotiated...

Of course one is not forced to work at a company and the onus for one to keep their conviction is on them, not on others to accommodate them...

Disingenuous behavior is a two-way street... For everyone employer who does the above there are employees taking "sick days" to play a round of golf...

Absolutely, hence the statement "And that too is disingenuous' as opposed to "No, what's disingenuous is ...".

I must live in a "lucky" area because most things are closed. I remember last year on Christmas Eve I unexpectedly discovered I needed something at about 5 PM that I couln't live without for 36 hours and the only place to get it was the convenience store. THey would be open till midnight or whatever their usual hours were. I don't remember if they were opening up on Christmas or not. Even Walmart was closing before I could get there.

Most convenience stores are open on both Christmas and Thanksgiving day. Many years ago, like the 50's maybe, they were not open. They started staying open on Thanksgiving in the 60's and Christmas in the 70's. I worked in a convenience store in the 70's a couple years after they started staying open on Thanksgiving. I remember an older female customer apologized to me for having to work on the holiday. I replied to her that I would not be there working if she were not there shopping. If the public did not support the stores that are open, they would close.
