How would one know they are not working voluntarily? Many places pay extra for working at such times. Also, how about the traveler. I found myself away from home with a fuel leak one thanksgiving. There were no mechanics available. I can't remember what I did, but I got through it somehow. What if I have needed duct tape or some other piece of essential equipment. Since we can't count on people to show kindness to strangers as the Scriptures suggest, it might be good to have some stores open.

We found ourselves with a car problem (can't even remember what it was) a few New Year's Eves ago and ended up spending two days with my aunt (we were already 30 miles from my parents house) while waiting through New Year's Day for the guy to work on our van. And to top off the deal he charged us HALF price for the labor and for the parts only, as he was a friend of my cousin! If this particular mechanic hadn't been available there's no telling how long we would have been held over, how many days of school the kids would have missed (they ended up missing 1 day anyway), and how much money it would have cost. Oh and had it been in a place where we didn't have family - I sure hope there would have been a hotel nearby with people working as well!

Blessings,

Garsy

I am very fortunate that I have a boss who makes sure I get every Sabbath and every holy day off, plus his holidays! I thank G-d continually for this, because it is so unusual. I hope I am able to work here until I croak!

Although I don't celebrate Christmas, I admit that I feel bad for SOME who work on that day, and I use their services. I often ask them about it, though. Many work because they need the extra money they get for working on a holiday, and many don't have family nearby, so it is just another day. Sometimes, it will be someone who would rather be with family, so we talk a little, and I wish them a nice day.

I don't think anyone is "special" or deserves "special treatment" because they are working a holiday. Most holiday workers are paid at least time and a half wages and sometimes more...plus they only work 1 shift which means a range of 4-8 hours in most cases...so I don't see the big deal. They are still getting to go home and have time for a meal with their family, friends, pet, or whomever they choose.

What really irks me is when those of us who are "on call" have to go in because some innocent child is found in the dumpster beaten beyond recognition because the family member had a "few drinks too many" or some other idiotic excuse or some child is in custody because the rest of the family was killed by a drunk driver...

You get my drift....there are some reasons better than others to whine about working holidays, but the bottom line is the hours we spend at work are only one part of the day.

I don't support retail stores, gas stations, restaurant's, etc on the holiday, but I can appreciate the fact some people really find comfort knowing they are there for them.

I for one appreciate those that are on call to help those children and families! May God bless what you do! If you were around here and I KNEW where you were stationed out of - I'd make sure you had a HUGE plate of Christmas goodies to share with your co-workers, a simple token of my appreciation! There are those that have to be on duty (fire station, ER's, State police local headquarters) and that is incredibly appreciated by me and my family - and they are ALWAYS treated to a big tray of Christmas goodies.

Blessings,

Garsy

"In a perfect world everyone would be in church on Sunday and not working."

Yeah, in church, in the dark. Someone has to make the power.

Oh, no bathrooms either. Someone has to run the sanitation facilities.

Hope you got gas before church. No eating out either.

I hate to break it to you, but it isn't the '50s any more. Nor is it the '20s or the 1700s or any other time but now. This is the world that it is. There is a price to be paid for the society that we live in and the amenities that come with it.

Should the stores be closed on Muslim holidays? Jewish? Buddhist? There are lots of those cultures in this country, too.

Can we be a bit too literal? A perfect world is just that...perfect. A world where everything would run on its own on Sunday so EVERYONE could be in church.

Hence my statement, we don't live in a perfect world so we can't expect everyone to be off on those days.

Biblically, in a perfect world, everyone would be worshiping on Sabbath, not Sunday.

But anyway, back to stores on Thanksgiving and Christmas . . . .

Point of fact is that those Holidays are not nearly as widespread as Thanksgiving or Christmas. Just turn on your TV tomorrow and see.

Or anytime between now and Christmas.

I would add again that it isn't a religious distinction. There is nothing inherently Christian about Thanksgiving and its almost much the same way now with Christmas, aside from the name and its history. I think one could observe a traditional American Christmas, with very little of the traditions missing, and not mention or ponder Jesus even once.

That's not an indictment just a statement I believe to be realistic. Most of the Christian emphasis is added on by spiritually minded families looking to honor Christ on what our society considers a big day to celebrate materialism and whatever else we're celebrating (a general feeling of being nice???).

Its not about Thanksgiving or Christmas being better its that more people consider them special days and celebrate them. I would hope all people of all belief systems could get whatever days they consider special (or at least the top two) off but apparently its hard enough to close stores for the two most widespread ones, nevermind all the "smaller" ones.

There are some good arguments for keeping some stores open, I have to say that was not one of them.

I am thankful that stores will be open and people will be working tomorrow.

I am travelling across the country for a funeral tomorrow and people working are making it easier for me to travel (and cheaper).

Good for them. Plenty of other stores will be open if needed.

These are two different arguments. The first is the falacy of progress. That is that things are getting better as we move through time. Our technology is not really necessary or good. All of the examples you use can be delt with, if we considered certain things to be a priority. Also, our technology makes it easier to violate any of the commandments. I do not think we are necessarily better off than those who lived in the 1700's. If a terrorist were to bomb our power plants, would much rather be living with Ben Franklin than Bill Gates.

Regarding your other argument. We are already in a situation where one belief system is given preference over all of ther others. That is the secular traditionalists. There is always going to be a belief system that has more influence than all others in a society. It is just a matter of choosing which one or just letting one dominate through "natural selection".

Your question being specific to department stores, discount stores, drug stores, grocery stores, restaurants, movie rental places and other non essential businesses being open for the two remaining real national holidays.......

Well, I see employment as a blessing for those who have work. I also see a blessing in those services being available for those who are widowed or just alone for whatever the reason.

My nephew is away at college and is working security for the college while the other students & staff go home to be with their families. Now, I don't see this as an "essential" job and he has a large, very loving family, but he has decided to sacrifice so others can be with their's.

Also, some people never get a day off from work to do much, lest it be for holidays, so by being open, these people are not deprived of the same amenities of shopping as others.

I am all for it!

I do as little exchanging of money on the holidays and Sundays as I can get away with.

When I went to work at Wal Mart in Oct. 2003, I got Sundays and holidays off. That lasted less than a year. By the time I left in January 2007, I was working about 50 Sundays a year and Good Friday, Easter and Thanksgiving. I did get another $1/hour to work Sundays. It wasn't worth the time away from my family. We got no holiday pay. We had no choice but to work those days.

The store closes at 6 pm on Christmas Eve. It takes another hour or more to get all of the customers out of the store. Then there is clean-up.

Then do you consider yourself the weaker sister or do you consider those who do the same on other days for biblical reasons equally justified?

Equally justified. My mother is a Seventh Day Adventist. If her employer required her to work on Saturdays, then I'd think that was wrong too.

Too bad they will be working to do those parades.

By that logic, we should close the stores on Halloween as well. It is more widely celebrated than Thanksgiving.

Do you have any proof of that? I don't see any Halloween parades on October 31. No Halloween football games (unless it falls on a Sunday) and everything is open normal hours. I've never heard the statement "I'm flying up to see my folks for Halloween". The traditional Halloween festivities usually take place at night and can easily do so. More people may participate (maybe) but most of them do not require the day off to do so.

The fact that Halloween is not an off day like Thanksgiving is not a good reason to take away the Thanksgiving holiday also. Even if they were similar situations, which they are not.

True but the workers are also blessings to the places where they work. Businesses do not hire people out of the goodness of their hearts, they do so out of perceived need. It is a business relationship between two equal parties and should be treated as such by each.

there are Halloween parades where I live. Halloween is a HUGE holiday where I live and it's very sad. it is more celebrated that Christmas or Thanksgiving or Easter.

Quite simply, forcing anyone to do what goes against their religious convictions is discrimination.

I agree ROberta and except for necessary services then every job should be open to you no matter your religious beliefs. TO say that you can only work here if you will work SUnday is religious discrimination if you won't because of your beliefs.

Easter isn't widely celebrated because its hard to commercialize it (Easter candy isn't extremely lucrative). Its also real easy to use the birth (or coming) of Jesus for all manner of silly philosophical nonsense, its harder (but by no means impossible) to co opt the Resurrection that way. Thanksgiving is the same way in regard to commercialization as Easter but its attached to Christmas so it parasites off of Christmas' heavy commercialization and resulting popularity (Macy's parade isn't a celebration of Thanksgiving after all).

Halloween is growing in popularity but has a way to go in order to catch Thanksgiving on a national scale. Partly due to its lack of national holiday status so it isn't a good time to travel to see the kids since everyone's schedules are normal. I do suspect that if a survey of young people was taken to find out what holiday they enjoy the most or look forward to the most Halloween and New Years Eve would probably finish ahead of Thanksgiving and Christmas. But even I realize the futility of advocating for stores to be closed on those nights.
