I don't understand the question. Why would I be excited that people are being laid off? Am I missing something? I do think that money that has been donated should be spent on issues like Prop.8. I'm thankful there are Christian organizations like Focus on the Family, ACLJ and I'm sure many more, who stand up for Christianity in this country and work to prevent the takeover by Secular Progressives. It is difficult for Christians to organize and stand up for what they believe in so these groups help with that. I think that is what the money is donated for. I don't think people want their money spent to build a mega church/business. I think they are providing means for Dr. Dobson to take up these issues and hopefully, win.

Not sure how long you've been around the C/E folder but there are those here that despise Focus on the Family. Amazingly, there will be people who are happy about this! Just wait.

Just wait. Really? I've been through layoffs, and I'm sad when anyone gets laid off. At firms run by the less wise people, the folks who dissent tend to be the victims, which is especially sad for FOTF.

I don't pay attention to Focus, but i wouldn't be happy that anyone lost a job.

So I guess you are saying Christians should just be doormats for any Secular Progressive way of thinking that comes along? We should just support good little family ministries and wake up when it's too late to do anything to at least try to stop the minority view in this country from taking over the majority view? Whether one likes Dr. Dobbins personally or not doesn't matter. He has the courage to stand up for Christianity and that is what we need, these days especially. Perhaps the best way to fight is to become a PAC, a ChristianPac, but then they'd have to pay taxes, right? A lot of people probably wouldn't like Jay Sekulow, either, but he's doing a good thing.

If you read the article, you'll see that this is nothing new. This is the third year in a row that FOTF has laid off workers. It's very costly to run a Christian non-profit. If your gift income does not come one, workers cannot be paid. Trust me, I know. I've taken two pay cuts two months back to back working for a Christian University. Thankfully, it's all being paid back this month. It happens. While I'm not a whole-hearted fan of FOTF anymore, we can pray that the laid off workers find new jobs.

For those of you who may not realize this Focus on the Family is a non-profit organization. Focus on the Family Action is a political activist group and donations to that are not tax deductable. I support both groups organized by James Dobson. I cannot tell from the article if the money came from that Action organization or the ministry. Notice how this is worded from the article. In all, Focus pumped $539,000 in cash and another $83,000 worth of non-monetary support into the measure to overturn a California Supreme Court ruling that allowed gays and lesbians to marry in that state. The group was the seventh-largest donor to the effort in the country. The cash contributions are equal to the salaries of 19 Coloradans earning the 2008 per capita income of $29,133. He stands up for a particular perspective of Christianity, one in which people are free to disagree with him about. Layoffs are sad though, regardless of who they happen to.

I know this is about FOTF and the OP's thought that some may be happy about the layoffs (I really hope not), but as a ministry, it's no wonder they're having tough times. I don't agree with everything Dr D says and I've felt uncomfortable about some of their political methods, but there have been a lot of good things come out of FOTF, especially things that do focus on families and parenting and marriage. Every church and ministry I know is taking a hit in this economy. Dh is a pastor of 2 mission churches, one without any pay and the other with a housing allowance. We're looking at the possibility of our income being reduced by $500-700 in January, which will be nearly half his church income. I'm looking for a job which isn't an easy feat right now. Our mother church has gone from throwing money around 2 years ago to turning off the lights and heat in every room possible and cutting costs anywhere they can. In this economy the first thing people seem to cut out of their budgets is giving. The second is service. In the mean time we're searching for better ways to reach more people and trusting that the Lord will provide what we need. I hope other ministries will seek to continue spreading the Gospel by all means possible. I hope ministries will learn to work together and remember to live by faith. I pray that our lives will be a witness to those who are struggling.

ORIGINAL: freakofnature Focus on the Family laying people off See story here Please try and contain your excitement I've survived three rounds of layoffs at the company I work for. I am very grateful that God has kept me throughout my life. I do not rejoice over anyone losing their job. I do not support or agree with all of the views of Focus on the Family, but they have done many good works. When an economy slows down, believe it or not, the LAST thing a company or ministry should do is look to layoffs. The fewer people earning income, the worse the economy will get. As many people as possible need to be kept working.

Just for the record, I think James Dobson is one of the kindest, sweetest, wisest, most generous and God-fearing men that I know. Yes, I have a man-crush on Dr. Dobson. I appreciate men with integrity, biblical ethics, and biblical morals.

Hey Cow, One time I fired a CPA for making fun of how much money we give to Christain causes. PS you do realize that by deciding that Dobson is Self-righteous that you -yourself are claiming that title.

Whatever your opinion of FOTF/Dobson, I'm not happy to see a bunch of people end up unemployed.

But that man is the VERY REASON most of us who contribute to Focus on the Family and Focus on the Family "give". Take him away and I bet you see the money dry up completely and what are we left with? What are "you" doing to fill this void you believe he left? What ministry has God placed you over?

Dr. Self-Righteous is in his late 60's. He will step down at some point. FOTF goes away then, it will be evidence that he did not steward the ministry wisely. As contrasted with the Billy Graham organization that has evolved as Dr. Graham had to reduce his personal involvement. Why would I want to "fill the void" of a ministry that became a PAC?
