There are times black nylons will complete an outfit. I'll give you that. I guess I choose comfort over completing those outfits.

I have a couple pairs of heels that are so tall they hurt me. I only wear them on dates or church, where I know I won't be doing a lot of standing/walking/etc. And even then it's rare.

I have high arches, so shoes that don't have arch support are torture for me to wear for long periods of time. They better be a darn awesome shoes. At my wedding I wore the shoes for the ceremony only. I took them off and put on my comfy flip flops (and leather jacket) for the reception. Even in all the formal shots I'm wearing my flip flops.

My SIL took pictures of both the heels and the flip flops. It was funny.

lol! Definitely! I won't wear shoes that are uncomfortable if they are just "okay". It's not worth it. But if I really love the shoe and I know it will break in soon, I'll put up with the breaking in period. I don't think I own a pair that didn't eventually get comfortable enough for the appropriate activity. I found that adding the gel inserts made especially for high heels makes a huge difference! Especially of they have a thinner bottom.

I won't say for the sake of beauty as much as for the sake of feeling pulled together and coordinated!

I loooove heels and cute strappy heeled sandals when the outfit/occasion calls for them. Even though they are not as comfortable as other shoes I own, I will wear them if they are what sets my outfit off nicely and it's for a limited time. But, I don't wear them for all day or for events, or when I have to do a lot of walking...those kinds of shoes were never intended for that.

quote:

Is this something that we as women should give up doing, or is it okay in moderation?

I don't feel any inclination to stop. When it gets to the point that it's not worth it to me, then I'll stop. But until then, I know my limits and where it is and isn't appropriate to wear those things. And I try to buy better quality shoes so they aren't always as uncomfortable as they may look. I don't think there is anything wrong with dressing up when the occasion calls for it, and I am not about to wear a nice, dressy outfit then toss on casual or old-lady looking shoes!

I agree with everything here. Personally, almost everything I wear is comfortable. Even my hose, when I wear them, are comfortable. However, there is one pair of shoes that I love and get a lot of complements on, but they're not very comfortable. They're not causing any damage and I can wear them in a lot of settings, but I have to be sure I'm in the mood for uncomfortable shoes that day and won't be on my feet all day. So yeah, sometimes we sacrifice comfort for beauty.

Karlie,

I've learned something about you this afternoon.

All these years, I truly thought you lived in heels and wore them everywhere and all the time (except when you were doing exercises).

As to the OP, I prefer comfort over discomfort.
Also, I don't necessarily think of it as compromising on beauty.

BUT! Also, my tastes and preferences have changed a bit recently; rather they've expanded . . . to include fashion styles and comfort levels that I have enjoyed for many years AND introducing ideas that I haven't had in decades (or, in some cases, have never had).

Beauty, for me, is pretty eclectic.

Karlie . . . you may get a kick out of this . . . the school that I'll be attending . . . one of their dress requirements (they have 3 separate ones; all of which much be adhered to) is "professional" and is specifically define for women as a skirted suit. Me?! A professional suit?!

Oh I learned a lot too. Though I did think she wore heels while exercising.

And her avatar led me to believe that she wears hot, li'l strappy sandles even while forum-ing.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed that my image of Karlie has been shattered.

LOL! You guys are too funny!! Nope, even I have my limits and only wear the high heels where appropriate. Well, okay, I do have a 3 inch heel on my favorite pant boots, which I wear all day tromping all over campus! But those are perfectly comfortable! And I DO have a wedge on nearly every summer sandal I own, but that's different than a stiletto!

Here's something really sad that will make you both sdhake your heads at my image...I wear my tennis shoes 15-17 hours a day every day when we're at camp. I don't even pack my heels!

Because of my height and the men that I've dated, I have a hard time wearing heels. I feel awkwardly tall.

what makes heels uncomfortable is probably because I don't wear them. I can wear heels that have about 2" heel max. Anything higher than that stretches my arch too much and gives me a charlie horse in my foot. So I don't.

Also because I don't wear them very much, the really tall heels I have a hard time walking in. I can walk OK in heels, and do better than most people I know. But the really tall heels I don't wear enough and don't know my own height. What really stinks is that most of the shoes out there are 3" tall.

I wear my tennis shoes daily. Actually, they aren't tennis shoes. They are usually skate shoes. I wear running shoes when I walk/run. I have a nice casual shoe that I wear with my khaki's at work. But they have a weird seam that gives me a blister after more than a day. This is after several months of wearing them too.

Regarding other "beauty discomforts," I pluck occasionally. I don't wear shirts that are awkward. If it's something that needs constant adjustment, I won't wear it.

Anyway.........I'm babbling. Maybe this should be posted in Shar-Mar's thread.

I saw a line in a movie awhile back where the mother was teaching the daughter that one must suffer in order to be beautiful. Gone are the days of squeezing our waists so tightly into corsets that we cannot breathe, but there are a few things that we still wear (high heels come to mind) that are not good for us, are often uncomfortable, and yet we wear.

Do you ever wear things that are not comfortable for the sake of beauty? I'll admit that I do sometimes, although not for more than a couple of hours at a time. Is this something that we as women should give up doing, or is it okay in moderation?

Lisa,

I guess I'm at an age where I just don't make myself uncomfortable to be attractive. Oh, I like being attractive to my husband, but I hope I can figure out a way to do it without pain involved.

When I was younger? Oh, I did a lot of things I despised in order to try to make myself beautiful. Thankfully, I married a man who does not like a lot of artifice. He prefers that I not wear lipstick or fingernail polish. He doesn't care what other women do. For him, it's just not the real me when I wear that stuff, which I rarely do these days. I also don't wear a lot of make up and never have. And I HATE heels. I rarely wear them anymore. Ever since I severely broke my ankle and my foot was hanging from the end of my leg by some skin and muscle, I just don't relish the thought of twisting my ankle in a pair of heels.

I am the same way, I am 6'0 so when I wear heels I just look odd, but that still does not stop me I really don't care how crazy I look

I probably go for Beauty and then comfort with my job I always have dress very professional, although when I am sitting at my desk my shoes are off untill I have to get up again but it ends at my work, when I am at home, or grocery shopping or running errands, it's always comfort before beauty, I am strickly jeans kinda gal.

I'm going to specify, as other ladies have, that even when I'm comfortable, I'm put together. I match, my clothes fit, they're clean, my hair and teeth are brushed.

I can't say that. I have 3 kids under 6...I can't tell you how many times I have looked down at my feet and seen my pink fuzzy flip-flop slippers on...at the grocery.

I would think that with all the advancements in technology that we have ways of being attractive without being so uncomfortable. Besides, hackneyed as it sounds and as much as Madison Ave. does a number on everyone's head, the force of someone's personality is still very, very attractive.

I've noticed that my most uncomfortable shoes have gotten more comfortable the longer I've had them. I have this one pair I bought for my sister's wedding because they were so tall and the dress was so long, and I could barely stand through the ceremony. Now I can wear them a lot longer and they don't bother me. I often will take off my shoes at church during worship, though.

I am short, which is one reason I like heels.

I was always encouraged by my mother to wear heels as often as I could because I'm so short, and she always added that our butts look smaller the further off the ground they are. I have to admit I do wear a type of heel, but it's boots with a heel. I've got about 8 different pairs of boots. They're A LOT easier to wear and they look pretty good.

I guess my daughter has the opposite problem. She is 5'8" so when she wears heels she looks like a giant -- to me anyway. LOL!
