Perhaps our pets help scratch the itch we have, deep down inside, to take care of the Earth like we were told to do, way back in the Garden of Eden. Yet it seemsI am often scratching the itches on my pets. Good thing the fur feels so good.

I believe God created all life on this earth with some similarities. ( Don't know if there are other parts of creation that are very different.) I think scientists sometimes have an emotional need to show humans are smarter and are the only ones to have feelings. They want to find some bases to say people are special and 'higher'. The Bible states God put us in charge of the earth. It doesn't say we are smarter (remember, it says a country's leaders are in authority over us. Doesn't say they are good or smart) God has shown us a way to Himself and that we are special to Him. I suppose animals are special to Him in their way He has plenty of love to go around. Animals often make very heroic choices and certainly love. I think God created them that way and it is not anthropomorphizing.

Adding on, do you all give your pets birthday parties and special treatment that day of the year? Take pictures or take them on vacation? Do you cry for your pets and feel their pains? Do you try to comfort them and share love with them? Do you scold them and try to teach them lessons?

I do try to assign their "birthday" to a holiday to make it easier to remember. This started with a batch of kittens that were actually born on St. Patrick's day. Take pictures on vacation? Some great photos come from pets no matter where they are. Cry for their pain? Perhaps not cry but wish I could ease the pain. I cried when my older dog passed away. I was glad for how it happened. She was very old and I knew she was not feeling well. I called the vet and we planned for me to watch her over night and then bring her in the next day if she did not improve. She went into the backyard and and found a sunny patch of grass, went to sleep and never woke up.

She went into the backyard and and found a sunny patch of grass, went to sleep and never woke up. Ahhh , i had a similar experience with my childhood cat. In his final days he was totally out of it, didn't eat or move. We were supposed to take him to the vets on Saturday to be put to sleep, but thankfully God took him that Friday night. He was 19 yrs old; I got him when I was 3 or 4. I cried because he was very much a part of my family. My current cats were born in April and May according to their vets records. I don't necessarily remember their birth dates, but will sing to them at some point in the month...I don't take them on vacation. I took pictures when they were kittens, now not so much. I will comfort them if they are ill or seem sad (Freedom more so than Midnight). I scold them and attempt to teach them lessons. The lesson of not jumping on the table hasn't been learned yet. Midnight is the rebel so I'm cautious with him because when scolded he will retaliate in some not so nice manner.

Do you cry for your pets and feel their pains? Do you try to comfort them and share love with them? Do you scold them and try to teach them lessons? My dog doesn't like other dogs, never has. I probably would have a party for him if he had any friends but, as it is, the kids and I usually do something silly for him on January 6, his actual birthday (we know because he was born in the shelter where we adopted him six weeks later). My dd enjoys making homemade dog treats for him and we have some cupcake recipes - one is like a really dense carrot cake with a cream cheese & yogurt frosting and he loves it. (carrots are his favorite) It kills me when he gets shots or when he has an ear infection. My dog before him had terrible (weird) medical problems and it broke my heart. Of course we try to comfort him. He's never really been sick like my last dog - dh and I took turns sleeping with her in the floor for about a week once when she hurt her back because we couldn't let her try to jump up on the bed. There are limits, though - the vet wanted to do eye surgery on that dog (she thought she must've had dystemper before we got her, as a puppy, and that left her blind) - I wasn't spending thousands of dollars on a blind dog even though her injuries were usually because she couldn't see. We just tried to protect her as best we could from hurting herself. She was happy. But, lesson learned, when I got Bauer I got him doggie health insurance right away! Really cheap for puppies but one trip to the emergency vet and it's paid for itself...I learned the hard way it's not as silly as it sounds.

We never celebrate their birthdays, and they'll be lucky to get a bone for Christmas (at least the dogs will, we don't get anything for the cats). But, seriously, I think that God put domestic animals (mainly dogs and cats) into our lives to make our lives fuller, emotionally. They aren't human, but they are companions. Even if they are like permanent two year olds till they're way into their senior years.

I think it is better for children to learn to humanize an animate "object" or pet, than say a barbie or ken doll. Yes I talk to a couple of cats, as if they were part of the Family. I missed out on parenting years. My son, born out of wedlock, I now talk to after 30+ years- (a real Blessing from God). Now when I take pleasure in feeding and looking after our animals, it causes me to think and regard the responsibility of raising a family in a caring and loving manner. Hope I didn't say too much.... my nick name used to be "Wild -Man"!

When you have one dog who believes he's really a little boy and waiting for the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio to transform him once and for all, and you have a diva rather than a lahsa/yorkie mix who would rather have jewelry than treats, even though she has an eating disorder.... what can I say? It's more than personality!

Oh yeah, I've always bought Christmas presents for my furbabies and he gets new toys and/or treats whenever Momma goes out!! I do scold him when he has been bad, but I don't do it through a raised voice, usually I will tell him he's a bad boy and then ignore him and turn my back to him (he totally HATES that!!) he KNOWS when he's been bad, you can see it in his face!!!

My cats are my babies--I know they are cats but they do have a special place in my heart. I don't buy them birthday gifts but do tell them happy day. I suppose some day I should tell them they are adopted but right now I just can't.

Do you cry for your pets and feel their pains? Do you try to comfort them and share love with them? Do you scold them and try to teach them lessons? Birthday parties? I don't think so! We don't know the birthday, but we decided to give it one of the kid's birthdays. lol He will get a bit of chicken, but I doubt he knows its because of celebration.....we sneak that to him anyway at times! We do take pictures, but not out of the way like you do the children! We will be taking pictures and the cat will walk by........and get cat napped by the kids and they say, "Take a picture of us with Rexie NOW!" I have empathy for most anyone and animals to. I don't like to see anyone in pain. I love to comfort him when he comes and asks for it most of the time! He may have to wait, but he will! He is more patient than the kids! He will get scolded of course, and we try to teach him some things. lol some items are a given - no walking on countertops, tables, etc. You get a water squik in the face! LOL! That type of thing! I remember growing up my brother and I had cats. His cat was named Alpha, and I had Omega! Alpha was cross eyed, and blind as a bat! He was the sweetest soul, and I would have been better off as a dog! VERY trainable! lol when he could SEE! Everyone could LAUGH at Alpha when he would mess up due to sight, and we would always laugh and give big rubs and sympathy...which he ate up of course. EXCEPT my brother.......he better NOT laugh... and I mean EVER! If he laughed - Alpha would go and pee on the end of his bed. LOL Imagine getting in with your PJ's and getting your toes wet! It was one of those awesome things that big sisters had to tease you about! God BLESS Alpha! I mean what are big sister's for after all!

This thread reminds me of a conversation I once had with a friend - obviously someone who just doesn't get it...I said something to my dog and she laughed that the dog "calls me" "Mommy" (I think I called myself Mommy talking to him or something); I incredulously said "well, what does your dog call you?" She just looked at me like I had three heads.
