I'm surprised how few people seemed to pick up on Palin's seeming support for same-sex couple rights and benefits.

If you noticed in the debate Biden agreed completely. No difference between the two parties so what are we to think? By the way, they both oppose redefinition of marriage to include same sex couples.

It's the definition of marriage that is the kicker and since most states are about 60/40 in favor of the traditional def, all liberals including Biden know that that is a row that can't be hoed with the typical liberal mindset.

In the debate, this question was asked. quote:
What promises -- given the events of the week, the bailout plan, all of this, what promises have you and your campaigns made to the American people that you're not going to be able to keep? This was Biden's answer: quote:
Well, the one thing we might have to slow down is a commitment we made to double foreign assistance. We'll probably have to slow that down. We also are going to make sure that we do not go forward with the tax cut proposals of the administration -- of John McCain, the existing one for people making over $250,000, which is $130 billion this year alone. We're not going to support the $300 billion tax cut that they have for corporate America and the very wealthy. We're not going to support another $4 billion tax cut for ExxonMobil. And what we're not going to also hold up on, Gwen, is we cannot afford to hold up on providing for incentives for new jobs by an energy policy, creating new jobs. We cannot slow up on education, because that's the engine that is going to give us the economic growth and competitiveness that we need. And we are not going to slow up on the whole idea of providing for affordable health care for Americans, none of which, when we get to talk about health care, is as my -- as the governor characterized -- characterized. The bottom line here is that we are going to, in fact, eliminate those wasteful spending that exist in the budget right now, a number of things I don't have time, because the light is blinking, that I won't be able to mention, but one of which is the $100 billion tax dodge that, in fact, allows people to take their post office box off- shore, avoid taxes. I call that unpatriotic. I call that unpatriotic. Now, how in the world does talking about not supporting McCain's tax cuts have anything to do with Obama's campaign promises? "What are you not going to do what you promised to do because of the financial crisis?" "Oh, I'm not going to do what the other guy promised to do." Yeah, like he was going to do what the other guy was going to do anyway. Big surprise there. The financial crisis has nothing to do with breaking someone else's campaign promises. quote:
I'm surprised how few people seemed to pick up on Palin's seeming support for same-sex couple rights and benefits. We all know what she believes on that issue. She didn't want to get into the ins and outs of that and bog down the debate with nuances. She never said she supports any special rights for same sex couples. This is what she said, quote:
"But in that tolerance also, no one would ever propose, not in a McCain-Palin administration, to do anything to prohibit, say, visitations in a hospital or contracts being signed, negotiated between parties." Biden is the one who said, quote:
", I take her at her word, obviously, that she think there should be no civil rights distinction, none whatsoever, between a committed gay couple and a committed heterosexual couple. If that's the case, we really don't have a difference. He was putting words in her mouth, and she chose not to respond to that at that time. When the moderator asked her, "Is that what your said?" Palin answered, "Your question to him was whether he supported gay marriage and my answer is the same as his and it is that I do not." transcript link

quote:
Since I’m not a republican or democrat I can answer this question objectively. Before I do so, last week debate was a tie and I think the winner of last night did better than both of them. Anyway, there was no question who was the winner, it was Senator Joe Biden. If Governor Palin was running for re-election in the state Alaska, then she will win by a landslide because she knows what’s going on there. This is not Alaska though; this is the entire United States of America. A lot of her answers constantly referenced Alaska when it had nothing to do with the question and then actually refuse to answer several questions. Alaska is what she knows and Alaska is her zone of comfort when she could not answer those questions. As the questions shifted to foreign policy it was not even close. I’m not sure what debate people were watching, but I think this poll is definitely a clear indication of partisan bias since everyone here is mostly Republican. Now, the question must be asked if something should happen to Senator Obama or Senator McCain who would you feel comfortable stepping in as President? My answer would be Senator Biden. Let’s be real, we may not agree with the politics of Senator Biden or the politics of the democratic ticket period, but yesterday was a clear indication that Governor Palin is out of her league. I can honestly say that some of her answers sounded like she had been cramming for a test for the past 2 weeks. The only thing I liked about her in this debate is how she looked directly into the camera as she spoke. This was something Senator Biden did not do in the beginning, but he caught on to it later on. Agreed. Although when it comes to debates, it seems a lot of people focus on style, visual queues and catch phrases...as opposed to substantive answers.

I thought the debate was uneventful and nothing totally unexpected. I found what people were saying more interesting. It is so inconceivable how the trite few who have bashed her over and over have said, well ya she did a lot better than her bad interviews. Ok , I will try to explain this so you liberals can understand it. THe media edits and presents their image of her to you, so see, that's why you thought she was dumb {TRACY DOLLS}. Palin edited = dumb, Palin unedited = smart,,,does it sink in yet? As Fred Thompson said beforehand, you will be able to see her from start to finish unedited. So just like the speech she gave, it was impressive, accomplished , authentic nothing new to me. SO I think Tina Fey is going to have to re-work her dumb Palin Schtick. She might choose the folksy angle or something. Couric even looked alittle depressed last night that all her work at making Palin look dumb didn't didn't pay off and now her ratings still suck. One "undecided" guy said he felt like she connnected with him,,,,uh oh !, that's what people were saying about Bill Clinton who was an expert Reagan mimick. I thought Palin did a little Reaganesque stuff herself. Even Geraldine Feraro , sounded a little ticked at Palin being the butt of SNL, so if there are many fence sitting women out there like that, they were indeed swayed by her. Biden is still pompous though he did pretty good at looking backwards to Bush and saying Bush about 150 times, "Past is prologue", yea that's a winner of a statement. Palin with 5 weeks against Biden's 30 years and they both held their own? I think Palin deserves a lot more credit than that!

I think there was just a tad too much "Darn Right" from Sarah. Tina Fey is going to pounce all over that! I think she did do her homework so she was able to hold her own. I can't speak for the last 30 minutes. I had taken some medication for chest congestion & I zombied out, so I went to bed. k

If you watch Fox news, you may sometimes see Frank Luntz, the guy who does the real-time dials. His crowd for the night (of both major parties) OVERWHELMINGLY gave the debate to Gov. Palin. 4 of them said that her performance had swayed their vote to McCain, 1 said they were now going for Obama. Unfortunately, the FOX lovefest (I watched some of their post-debate coverage) is unlikely representative of most voters (undecided). I wouldn't trust a FOX focus group any more than I'd trust a CBS one.

I was raised Catholic, but I mostly slept through chapel and mass. I guess I am secular, although I am pretty far from a liberal and consider McCain a socialist. I post here because I have found the forums to be an interesting and amusing group, and because I often get good advice here, especially about gifts. I've been pretty open about my politics here. My fiscal beliefs are very close to Ron Paul's. Regarding things like abortion, same-sex marriage, etc., I really just don't care one way or the other. I would never take a candidate's position on abortion, for example, into consideration; I only care about how low he or she will make my taxes. My personal vices, while expensive, are legal. And I don't care at all about other's vices, as long as they don't mess with my stuff. Now that's off-topic, so I'll close by saying that I watched the VP debate to see if either candidate would say anything that could sway my vote. I had been a weak McCain supporter until he supported the socialist bailout. Now I'm favoring Barr. Neither VP candidate said anything that would persuade me otherwise.

I watched most of the debate and am convinced that Palin won the debate. Why am I convinced you ask? She won because the expectation was that she could not hold up against Biden who is supposed to be such an awesome debater. Either she can handle herself with the toughest among them or Biden phoned it in. Since I don't think Joe phoned it in I give it to Sarah

I seriously cannot believe that you people think Joe Biden was the victor last night. I swear I don't understand the way some people's brains work. He flat out lied several times and when Gov. Palin called him on it, he lied even more, and I don't use the term "lied" like the left does when they actually only mean that something was said that they disagree with. Joe Biden is a flat out dirty-dog liar and it was really ackward listening to him do it. Sarah called him out several times, and nailed 0bama and his ever-changing policies very well. The only thing Joe did well was to be as boring as possible while resisting his urge to listen to himself speak for long periods of time. In doing so, he avoided making any of his usual gaffes. And his pretend "almost-crying" moment? Give me an ever-loving break. He is a horrible actor and that came across so phony. It reminded me of Bill Clinton when he would make himself cry. Gov. Palin hit a grand slam on this one, and it is funny to watch, as mentioned above, 0Bama's disciples in the media INSTANTLY switch from "Palin is stupid and unqualified" to "Vice-Presidential debates don't matter". Even 0bama's media know that Slow Joe lost.

One of the questions regarded "Global Warming". Bidden's stance was that it is clearly caused by humans and then went on to talk about "clean coal" technology rather than oil. So, how is HE so SURE that "Global Warming", is DEFINITELY caused by man???? Cause his buddy, Al Gore (who is making MILLIONS off of the whole global warming hype) told him so?

Neither he nor Fox are creating the results, it is straight real-time raw data of people from both parties watching the debate. Luntz then asks them to show hands for things like, "Did X win? Did Y win? Who came in undecided? Who is now voting for X?" etc. You might be enlightened a bit to watch Luntz.

They too found many who are either backing away from voting for Mr. McCain (and in many cases, become undecided again) or going to Mr. Obama. I guess it goes to show-consider the source regarding ANY "fact".

I don't know that I heard her say that she "denies" it-I think I heard in the debate anyway that she "questions" the factors which are the causes for climate change - and while I don't completely hold that position, I would agree that it is a much more sensible position than a flat out rejection of mounting evidence which would suggest that there is less and less need to "question" the causes of global warming.

I was very nervous going into this debate, but it became very obvious early on that the best thing the McCain campaign can do is stop "handling" Sarah palin and just let her be who she is. She had a shaky start last night (but really, who in her position wouldn't?), but she ramped it up as the night went on, unlike Joe "Is that a smile or a grimace" Biden, who, while he didn't give us any more classic gaffes, was simply phoning it in. As others have said, Sarah Palin with five weeks on the national stage stood toe to toe with a 30 year Washington vet for 90 minutes in front of millions of people and held her ground.....yet I'd give this one to Palin on that alone. But the fact that she solidly called the Obama campaign on many of their distortions and potentially disastrous policies cemented the deal for me. I hope McCain gives her a big kiss on the lips this morning, because she may have single handedly breathed some new life into a campaign that was rapidly going on life support...

I watched the first 45 minutes and taped the rest for viewing this weekend. My thoughts; Both candidates presented themselves well, and should be happy. They both made clear cases for their views. I thought Sen. Biden did an extremely good job presenting his tickets views, and criticizing Sen. McCains's positions. Gov. Palin did a good job articulating her thoughts, much better than she has in the past. Both candidates completly avoided answering questions they don't want to deal with. I think talk about who 'won' or 'lost' isn't very meaningful. Everybody thinks their favored candidate 'wins'. These things are so heavily scripted that there isn't much real give-and-take, and not much new information comes out. We'll see if my opinion changes after the last 45 minutes.

I HATE the post-debate "let's let some heavily partisan people who we just sort of found on the street someplace yell at each other as sort of moderated by our heavily partisan and completely unqualified newscasters" garbage. Send me back to regular programming. Let me digest what I just heard for a while. Eesh.
