The only glimmer of hope I have at this moment is the memory of 2004 when every poll going into election day showing Kerry on top, and yet he lost by such a substantial margin.

I am not one to remember polls ... so I looked it up, and Bush had the lead for almost all of September and October ... there was a slight dip the day before but it appears that that one was an anomaly.

That being said ... all the hoopla over the mishaps in Palin's interview do not concern me as yet. These (especially the last one) were gotcha questions that were highly edited. The debate will not be edited, which means they cannot edit the piece to sway anyone's opinion or up the ratings. (Those gotcha moments get more coverage than moments of brilliance ... and when you are looking to discredit an opponent, they are the perfect tool.)

I am praying that we get a very clear idea of her knowledge and capability in this debate. It is hard to communicate within an interview setting because of the editing that occurs. I remember being quoted by a paper on two occasions, and both times the quote did not even remotely resemble what I had said ... but was made to fit the slant of the article.

News reports are the McCain campaign is conceeding Michigan and is pulling all resources of that state. He has been too willing to "stay above the fray" and not name names, he is in the process of "loosing the big game."

IMO good move since the economic situation will be too much to overcome.

Not in Michigan or CA he can't!

McCain gives up on Michigan in a major retreat

"Republican presidential candidate John McCain conceded battleground Michigan to the Democrats on Thursday, GOP officials said, a major retreat as he struggles to regain his footing in a campaign increasingly dominated by economic issues.

These officials said McCain was pulling staff and advertising out of the economically distressed Midwestern state. He also canceled a visit slated for next week. Michigan, with 17 electoral votes, voted for Democrat John Kerry in 2004, but Republicans had poured money into an effort to try to place it in their column this year."

To quote an ex-Prez "It's the economy stupid!"

McCain leaving Michigan may be practical, but it has zero upside on the voter PR front. It makes McCain look scared.

Interesting op-ed piece by Dick Morris:

His failure to do much of anything in Washington, after teasing the whole country and riveting its attention on him by suspending his campaign, has let the voters down — and they are turning away from McCain.

McMaverick made a big move, then seemed to freeze up.

Glenn Beck said on CNN, he lost the election on the one issue driving it. By suspending, then not getting the votes, then voting for the Bailout.

Alot of America was against this vote. He could have shown his maverick style by not voting with it. There were enough votes in the Senate to get it.

Most Americans understood that something has to be done, but 700 Billion? It's a big pill to swallow when your struggling to pay for gas and groceries, etc.

I'm expecting a few more "surprises". But I think he is done.

I agree with Dick and Glenn on this. He did'nt take his one chance to stand out from the pack.

You're right, I'm thinking about the exit polls taken on Election Day that showed Kerry running away with it....and it all turned out to be wrong...

So if Mccain wins, we don't need God's help? WOW.

We are at least gonna need His help to keep Mccain healthy and alive for 4 years so Plain doesnt have to take over.

Yes John McCain can still win this. But ONLY if Obama messes it up. It's far better to be on the upswing towards the end of a campaign than to be down. I mean Obama would have to be caught with drugs, or a hooker, or something that damaging in order for him to loose steam. The economic crises will last well past Nov. 4.

The GOP is trying to see if they can pin any of their hookers or drugs on him. LOL.

Seems to me that hookers and drugs are bi-partisan.

Does he have a shot? I think the events of the last week are a "game changer" and he's really dead in the water right now. People are scared, misinformed, and confused and that's going to send them running right to Barrack Obama's reassuring form of socialism. Plus, I don't think McCain has really helped matters himself the last several days.

But, sadly, I think we're going to be stuck with Obama unless there is yet another "game changer" and I shutter to think what that would have to be to turn this tide. Short of something like another 9/11, which would be horrific, I think we'd better just brace ourselves - Obama's going to win this. And that doesn't bode well for our society, the economy, or anything else.

I'm not convinced it's too late, but if McCain doesn't win, I take heart in the fact we have someone like Sarah Palin waiting in the wings. She may not have an ivy league diploma, be a policy wonk or a consitutional lawyer, but she's got common sense, is a quick study, and she's good on her feet. I'll take that any day over the hacks entrenched in Washington.

I don't recall that Ronald Reagan or several others I could name had such great college credentials, a background in foreign policy or in constitutional law, and they did just fine.

It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings, and the fat lady might just be Obama's cockiness. If he exhibits that, the American people will not like it.

We'll see what happens.

My question is who is his puppet master? Taken off the teleprompter and cue cards he can't string a complete sentence together. uuhhh, uhhh, aaahhh ahhh, um um etc.

He writes his own books and co-writes his speeches. He also doesn't seem to memorize talking points. I think it's refreshing to have an honest and intellectually engaged president.

Every speach Nobama gives his laden with his talking points. If he doesn't have a teleprompter his speaches are laden with stammers. I guess he believes that "white folks greed runs a world in need." Or, statements such as "I am my brother's keeper" don't apply to his half-brother since he isn't a full brother. If Nobama is honest, Ossama is a humitarian.

She can't name any newspapers or magazines that she reads and she's a train wreck in interviews if she's ever asked a follow-up question. There is nothing redeeming about not knowing anything pertinent to the job. There's nothing wrong with ignorance on a broad range of issues, but it's insulting to the office to elevate a know-nothing to the position. I'm pretty sure *I* would be a better veep than Sarah Palin, as I happen to read things and watch the news.

I don't want a regular Joe (or Jane) with a good head. I want an exceptional person who knows what he or she is doing.

Common sense isn't sufficient to become a doctor, common sense isn't sufficient to be an engineer, common sense isn't sufficient to be a lawyer, and common sense isn't sufficient to be the president of the most powerful nation on earth.

Sure, they're his talking points. When he says "uh" in interviews or when talking off the cuff, it's because he is taking the time to actually consider the question. He doesn't parry questions with talking points, he actually engages them.

You don't have to be a doctor or even a rocket scientist to be a leader. In fact, most true egg heads don't make good leaders. They get bogged down in the details. It's been my experience of several decades that egg heads usually work for the people who have the charisma and common sense to lead.

That's my long and unintellectual way of saying that I disagree with you, but hey, isn't it great we live in a country where we can disagree and no one gets shot.

huangshan,

I can't help but ask, and I do ask respectully, have you been a mayor or a governor, or even headed up a taxing district? Have you been a CEO or even the chair of a volunteer group with more than 30 people in it? Have you done anything like that?

You're making a false dichotomy. Plenty of doctors become leaders or politicians, look at Bill Frist or Howard Dean. Lots and lots of lawyers become politicians. There are many smart people who happen to have both judgment and charisma.

Is it too much to have high expectations for the president?

Never said doctors can't become leaders.

Never said anything about lawyers.

Never said smart people don't ever have judgment or charisma.

As for expectations of a president, certainly, they should be lofty. I want a leader, but you and I disagree on how a leader is made or even how he/she manifests.

I take it you were not a Reagan fan.

I asked because you sound very confident about what makes a good leader. I was wondering how you were so sure of that.
