ORIGINAL: pstrdebi When we decide to follow our own ideas and thoughts... to me, it's like slapping Jesus in the face or saying that what He directed isn't important. Sometimes, there comes a time when, in order to grow, move on, whatever, people must follow their own ideas and thoughts that may strongly differ with those who had assumed they were their leaders. Truly, Debi, this is not a slap in Messiah's face nor saying that what he said is not important. I recognize that leaders may often feel that this is how it is, but I seriously doubt that you intend this as a cover-all statement. Sometimes, people simply outgrow a congregation, or they realize it is so faulty that they cannot continue in it.

I've seen a lot of posts on here that seem to say that the sheep have to learn to feed themselves, and well they should; but in Ezekiel there are some pretty stern warnings against the sheperds who feed themselves and not their sheep. It says that they eat up the good pasture, and drink of the deep waters, but foul the residue and trample down the pasture. It also speaks against ruling with cruelty and force, and states that the Lord will judge the shepherd based on the condition of the sheep--fat or lean. Seems pretty clear to me that the sheperd has a pretty steep responsibility.

Are we being Fed?? I believe that we should be growing everytime we hear God's word being preached and it's up to us to continue the growing process (Being Fed) throughout the week. I know my day doesn't go so well when i don't feed myself every morning with God's word. When I do my day is a lot easier and more pleasant. I admit I don't always read my bible first thing in the morning but I do on my breaks at work and during lunch ( I get away from the gossip that goes on in the lunch room). As far as small groups, the church I attend has a weekly bible study/prayer meeting that our pastor does. Everyone in our church is on the same page and I believe that some pastors may need to ask God for guidance on what his people need to hear, if he doesn't already. If your struggling and need help then the best counseling you can get is from your pastor. He should be there for you no matter what. I feel the most important thing is to pray about it..

We are right that we need to BE fed... and we are right that we need to feed ourselves... and of course it is a growing thing. Both parties... the "feeder" and those being fed... have a personal responsibility. From a pastor's perspective... (and I'm sure other pastors may feel this way... or at least they should) my husband and I feel a heavy weight of responsibility to "feed the sheep" and then also to feed ourselves. And often... we need to get away to be fed. It is disappointing however, when we go somewhere and the sermon is filled with pablum or the pastor is ranting about his own accomplishments, etc. There needs to be balance and order... and often we do not see that.

Feeding others is the outflow of His life in me. When I am feasting on and communing with Jesus, His life, His truth, His very essence will be communicated to those around me. At any given moment in the day I can feed others because He has fed me. It's nothing I do or have to work at. It is the evidence of life---His life. Am I being fed? If not, then perhaps the question is am I alive?

Jesus teaches about a lamp on the table and the light lighting the room or whatever, but the oil for that lamp is the grace given to each of us. There are so many ways to look at being fed or filling up your lamp with what is needed for the contiunous lighting that others may see Jesus working in your life, but there is no heart, soul, mind that can make up something that will feed grace into our lives but that of the Holy Spirit, and that given us to grow in the likeness of the son of the father.

And a lamp that is lit WILL light up the space that it is in. It is not a 'what to do with our light' but a fact, a result of His light in me.

This week I received enough to feast on for at least a month with one sentence that jumped out from an entire sermon. So I think the Holy Spirit never fails...when our hearts are open, and we are hungry, we will receive the right nourishment at the right place at the right time.
