Well, yeah, you might be right. It depends in part on where you live. If you're in a bigger city, you're more likely to meet a variety of people.

ORIGINAL: ekserekseez I think that everyone pretty much knows gay people nowadays, just like most people know a Muslim, or atheist, or whatever. I don't think so, no matter where you live. I wouldn't know an athiest unless they openly told me they were an athiest. Not all muslims "look" muslim. Not all gay people are effeminate or "butch". You cannot judge a book by it's cover.

Hi BeckeyZ: You're right, of course. I didn't mean guessing from the way someone looked or acted. I meant knowing people who publicly self-identify. I live in a big city, and encounter people who publicly call themselves gay, or Muslim, or atheist, or whatever. I guess I meant that, the bigger the population pool, the more chance there is to find all sorts of people, who then maybe feel more comfortable in identifying with various groups.

The thing you have to realize, is that a person is not gay, unless they act on feelings. As I have stated before in this thread. If you were to meet my friend, you would identify him as gay. He has a struggle with same sex attraction, but has never acted on those feelings and therefore should not be considered gay.

I understand what you mean. For me, the people I know as gay, like my (ex?-) brother in law DB, are pretty upfront that they act on it. Not an issue for me, but I understand that a lot of religious people (like my parents) are not thrilled about it. I am still very suprised to hear that people didn't realize Clay was gay (maybe they don't watch Kathy Griffin! It's been a regular focus of her jokes), and even more to hear that his music was used in any sort of a religious context.

She did get played around Christmas (as did Huff) and "Voice of the Savior" was played...for a minute...

Afterall, it was said that he was a Christian who sang religious songs from time to time too.

I wasn't shocked for some reason, but I was definitely confused all the time by the way he came off and spoke about his Faith.

Since I didn't watch the first few seasons of American Idol, I barely knew anything about Aiken. I didn't even know he called himself a Christian until I saw him interviewed in a Christian magazine. In that interview he came across as a perfectly normal, squeaky-clean Christian guy. Therefore, I was totally shocked when I heard the news. Somebody asked if he's in a relationship. Well, I found out the news when I saw his picture splashed on the cover of People magazine with the headline, "My Partner and I have adopted a Baby!" I guess that answers that question...
