Chowder, Mighty B, and Flapjack, Fairy OddParents.

Anyone watched these shows? I've only sat through one or two episodes of each of these. My six y/o old loves these shows as does DH [8|]

From what I'v seen they seem kinda tame although they're filled with lots of gross out humor especially the first three I mentioned. For some reason they rub me the wrong way. Fairly Odd Parents I can't stand because of the kids smartalecky attitude so I try not to let my kids watch it. When I don't let her she says I treat her like a baby LOL!

What do you guys think of these shows and why woudl you or wouldn't let your kids watch. And how would you explain it to a 6 y/o. Thanks!

Chowder and Flapjack are not allowed at our house, but we love Fairly Oddparents and Mighty B. My husband and I will watch them without the kids!

I don't allow my sons to watch any of those ones. Partly because they seem 'off' to me also and partly because my boys can think up enough ways to say unkind things or act rude (especially the sassing to parents stuff) and then say "but on TV they did...."
So mostly for my sanity and also to not have to 'unteach' them anything.

Nothing wrong with any of these. My teens like Chowder. Remember kids shows are geared towards kids, most the time.[;)]
Anyone for Captain Underpants?????[8D]

I agree. With the weird animation and gross out close ups [:'(] Mighty B and Flapjack are just kinda disturbing to me. I was looking on the IMDB message boards to see what other people thought about this show. You'd be surprised how many people actually like that kind of humor.[8|]

This is my main reason for not watching the Fairly Odd Parents. Yeah I admit I find it funny too but I can do without the rude bahavior and attitude. Then kids think it's ok to act like that.

But how do you explain that to a six y/o who thinks your treating her like a baby and to adults who think your just overreacting to a innocent kids show? [8|]

My kids are not allowed to watch these, and they have been made fun of by their cousins for years because we don't let them watch sponge-bob. Saying that you and your spouse watch and like them is not a good enough reason for letting kids watch them. My 3,5,8 ,and 9 year olds do not need to be exposed to adult humor.

For us.. it's a matter of what goes in will eventually come out.

As far as the 6 year old, we do struggle with that - especially w/ the 9 year old and the shows on the Disney channel that her cousins watch that she is not allowed to watch. We have just held firm our ground and said "These are the rules for our house. I know you are not a baby, but there are times when you will not be allowed to do what others do, period." Instead, we have been letting her watch shows such as the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. We recently started getting the Hallmark Channel, and that has been a blessing for the little ones who declared themselves too big for PBS.

My kids have always liked Fairly Odd Parents and now there's this "Total Drama Island" that my ds just loves! But I do not let them watch Chowder - it's just too bizarre. I don't know about the others. I'm pretty particular about what they can watch. As it is, they watch entirely too much. And when I start hearing attitude I don't like, it doesn't usually take long to pinpoint a source or two and nix it. I do think we have to be selective about this stuff. Some stuff is just way over the line in my house - kids don't even try it (Pokemon, Ben 10, etc - anything Anime). It's harder with some of this other stuff. I just want them to be choosy about how they spend their time (and how much).

Did you say your DH watches it with her? If you and he are not on the same page with this, it would be even harder to explain her. If you are on the same page then you have to explain that other homes' rules are not your rules. It isn't about her being a baby but that you, as her parent, have different expectations and standards. At 6 she should be able to understand if you explain the behaviors you find objectionable about these programs. It may go to reenforce the values and lessons you are trying to teach her.

Odd Parents is on Nickelodeon and I don't particularly care for it. It is suppose to be about a little boy named Timmy whose parents neglect him, his babysister Vicky abuses him, and his goldfish are really his godparents (oddparents). It states all this in the theme song. I'm sure you can google it.

I also dislike Caillou which is on pbs sprout whch is about an adventerous 4 y/o. To me he is nothing but a spoiled, whiny brat that gets his way and my child tries to mimic this behavior in which I won't tolerate.

The others I never heard of either, maybe it is for older children

I do however let my son watch spongebob, it is no different than Bullwinkle during my childhood. Sure directed for adults, but made for children

Haha, I get that a LOT (the other adults). If I'm really fed up with the person asking, I'll tell them: "Your children are your responsibility, you are quite free to choose what allowances you are willing to answer for. You are not, however, responsible for mine, I am. And if I thought your way was better I'd already be doing it that way."
(Or you could offer to let them babysit your child immediately after watching one of the shows... that could work[sm=icon_smile_evil.gif])

My children are not allowed to watch that either. I absolutely cannot stand his whiny voice. The other one that I had to stop was Arthur. That DW can be pretty bratty.

Hubby and I are not big fans of Nickelodeon. As toddlers our kids watched Disney channel only in the am. Now, we don't have cable so that solves a lot of issues. However our son is a HUGE gammer, but aht is a whole 'nother topic in and of itself.

My kids (ages 4-13) aren't allowed to watch those either... or Sponge Bob. They realize that not all the shows that they are not allowed to watch are necessarily horrible (although many are compared to our family standards). Some shows just don't make the cut. How many shows do they need to watch anyway? If they were to watch all the shows that they are already allowed (if they were to play them one after another) to watch they would never be able to leave the set and would have to have several sets going at once to see everything. So what if we don't watch Lilo and Stitch? Do they NEED it? of course not. Is it about their age or maturity? No. We have enough junk TV to watch without adding more junk to it. They already have too much to choose from. We prefer to make it so that there are not enough approved shows that they could watch TV all day just by flipping the channels to a different show. They are more likely to turn the camel off and go do something more healthy.

Most of our kids know the difference between stuff that are not allowed because of content, stuff that are not allowed for just being more junk, and stuff to be ingested really moderately. They are ok with this. Although, they don't go to school with kids who are talking about that stuff day in and day out, and most of our friends are respectful of our decisions (as we try to be of theirs as well). That may make a big difference.

I'm not familiar with those shows.

A couple months after getting cable I decided to put a parental block on Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. My kids were turning into couch potatoes and the stuff they were watching just wasn't what I would call "quality programming". Moreover, as a teacher familiar with the effect of high speed graphics on visual development, I have a pet peeve with how fast the images on commercials change and blur by and into young brains.

Since then my kids have discovered Mythbusters and also think Duff, the Ace of Cakes is quite cool.

Better yet-dust off the bikes and go for a ride!

I'm all for putting tight limits on TV watching. Watching more than an hour a day can negatively impact children's vision, vocabulary (and thus reading) and physical development.

Good luck figuring out what works for your family.
