solomonsprayer -> Annoying Medication Requirements? (9/20/2008 2:55:11 PM)

Have you ever had a prescription that had a bunch of annoying restrictiosn/requirements?...

My latest says I cannot eat anything 2 hours before or after I take the pill. And since it is twice daily, the pharmacist recommended donig it 12 hours apart. That sucks because I have to make sure I am awake at the exact times and also since it is a FOUR hour gap (can't eat 2 hrs before OR after the pill) for me to take the pill once in AM and PM, I hve to rearrange my whole schedule. It's super super super super super super super annoying and I have missed pills because of it. I want to eat when I want to and sleep when I want, etc. [8|] ...Sometimes I cannot eat when I am hungry....

I'm on one medication right now which needs to be taken 4x a day (so every 6 hours) and not only need to take them an hour before eating and on an empty stomach but in the middle of the night too, so I can empathise with you.

Can you define what you mean by 'AM' and 'PM'? This could really be anything. What is your daily schedule like? It can be difficult to eat when you're hungry. Think about having a small snack at these times ~ they can sometimes stimulate your appetite so that you can eat a balanced meal a little later on.

Maybe a talk with your doctor is in order. Sometimes those "rules" are not rules, but recommendations that can be bent.

My youngest ds is often on serious allergy medications, but I'm not going to mess with the kids sleeping so I discussed it with his doctors and we all agree that if he is sleeping and still breathing without major problems, I'm NOT to wake him up to make him take a breathing treatment.

That sort of pill could be a real problem for someone who is a diabetic. I'd be asking your doctor what they would recommend medication wise for a person with both diabetes and the need to take this medication you are taking.

Blessings,

Garsy

May be worth talking with your pharmacist too ~ sometimes they are better to ask about specific needs of a medication.

I do 'bend' the rules with my meds sometimes. I try as best as I can to keep to them though ~ but it can be difficult.

I am one of those bad patients who pretty much ignores the eating requirements when I am taking medication that has restrictions like that. I know that if it says to take on an empty stomach, that is usually so that your body can absorb it better, but I know that if I am hungry, then my stomach is probably empty enough to take a med and I usually try to give an hour after but I usually can't make it two hours. And as for the timing, that is just so your body is constantly getting the meds. But if you are off by an hour here and there, it isn't usually a big deal. But like others have said, talk to your doc and see how far you can bend the rules.
