Fairly or not, people ALWAYS vote their pocket books.
Note the word "fundamental", people are still buying and selling and producing. Look at the malls, they are still flooded with people, look at the stadiums, they are still selling out.
Yes the economy is in rough shape, yes there are problems but the foundation is still rock solid.
"An economy barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic system. Wall Street will be that system. Better than it was before. Better, stronger, faster." 
That being said I agree that McCain cannot say this because of the fear factor going on out there. It would definitely hurt him in the election.
