That is not the plain sense of the sentance. "Keep watch over your souls" is directly tied to "give an account."
That they are giving an account for you is the plain meaning and also alludes back to Abraham being asked to give an account for Sarah laughing. That would not be lost on a Jewish believer of that day.

I'm still not convinced. I can give an account as one who watches over my department and my business. I'm responsible for exercising proper oversight. I'm not responsible for every action of my employees. My employees can misbehave. Likely I actually WILL be held responsible for that, but not because I'm responsible for their actual behavior, but rather because their poor behavior is an indication that my oversight wasn't effective.
I remain responsible only for my behavior. My responsibility for that of others is indirect through that.
The text itself doesn't directly bear on that. There isn't a prepositional phrase the clarifies what I'm giving an account for - just a reminder to the members of my flock that I will be held acountable (for something, but what is it? - your actions? my actions? The text isn't specific here) and that this creates an obligation on my part to respect that.

See, my understanding is that those in authority are held accountable for their teachings and treatment of the people under them. It isn't so much the actions of the other people, but how one uses their own authority.

And is thinking about it some more, I guess it is like saying that Jesus should only have sacrificed Himself ONLY if He knew that all would be changed and live right....
I never really thought of it that way, but I totally agree and it strenghtens our point!
There is no condition to love and nor should there be a condition to we act to our spouce to how our lives are going. "you reap what you sow".
I think its hard to really define the roles these days because the woman (especially in america) are extreamly independant (observations from forigners). Men have little backbone or they are completely demonstritive/self involved (one extreme to the other).
I think due to the saturated environment of divorce and lack of ugency to marry these days, to get a good idea of roles in the home, we should look at traditional old-school relationships, courtships and marriages. How did they do it 100 or 200 years ago? There was less divorce, that's for sure!
