I am absolutely amazed (in a negative way, shocked) that you asked for a scriptural approach and so far I have not seen any scriptural quotes at all.

In post 2 she was told to read Matthew 18

Ok, now we're getting somewhere. Yes, Henrietta, you do have a right to stand up and say, HEY!!! He is going against the word of God. Can you take this to whomever is in charge of the denomination? If there is someone over the pastor, then you might want to take this to them. If not, then I agree with the others, take some elders with you and confront him. If he still says no, then you might want to see about taking him out of the palpet and getting a new pastor. But first, pray, pray, pray!! God's blessings, Henrietta. You got a tiger by the tail with this one.

Yes it is that extreme. He has personally told us that he does not believe it to be sin. Behind closed doors he is telling couples to carry on even allowing them to be ministry and leadership. People we thought were married are not married - that kind of thing. - Sorry if I've been too vague - I'm just trying to hold on to my emotions here and not go overboard with a public rant.

Correct step one.
Then the elders.
Then before you leave the church, ask to address the congregation. It is your responsibility to reprove error, and expose error (if indeed it is in contradiction to scripture).

When a minister is in error, how should it be handled.
Two or more members should go to him & with scriptural reference, address precisely his action that is in error.

There is a teaching in our church which is leading people astray. It is not taught openly but now that several members have expressed deep concern it is being swept under the carpet.
If not "openly", so then , is it being "covertly" taught? How is it being learned or leading another astray if it is not openly taught? You would need to be more specific in order to get a righteous response.

The minister has been challenged, but he stands his ground. Whilst I don't wish to cause trouble I am wondering what the next step should be.
Ask him to show scripture to back his stand. If it is mere doctrine, then that belongs to man to teach (not God). This is one of the main causes of division & splits. Doctrine generally gets in the way of righteousness.

I don't think it right to 'attack' him from within (I don't want to attack him at all, this is a spiritual battle I just couldn't think of a better word. We are praying for this man and it is all very painful).
Is the appropriate step to write to the authority over him within our denomination?
If he has hurt someone & continues to stand his ground, yes. You will be partially reponsible if he continues to hurt others.
If it is a personal spiritual battle, no. The church should pray for him, support him, and discuss it with him if it is affecting others.

Had similar problems some months back(i have since left that church of 15 years).

Pastor brought in some course which was heavily focussed on the 'holy spirit'. It had special sessions just for receiving the spirit. So much so they layed hands even on unbelievers hoping they will experience the spirit.

i asked him before two elders:

a) Can you command the Holy Spirit to come?

b) Why is this spirit not testifying of the Lord Jesus but of itself?

He kept quiet but went on with the course. i left the church.

It was the right thing to do. And before leaving, the question should have again been asked by you of him before the entire congregation.

Although I erred the same way once - discussed the issue with the pastor in person, but not in front of the congregation (of a dozen or so), before leaving.

Yes prophet, I saw that.

And the spiritual well-being of the rest of the congregation is YOUR responsibility also depending on the severity of the error, doctrinally speaking...

If the spiritual chef is taking sprirtual ingredients, and concocting a drug, or poison, or anything besides spiritual food into his messages, YOU do have responsibility.

Never mind offenses - you know what Jesus said - "They will come...".

IMO the elders represents the people. i am not an elder so i believe thats the proper way.

In any case theres no forum to address the people

One way that I avouid such problems in my Church is that at the end of each teaching or sermon I ask if there are any questions or if someone need further explanaton or Script;ure reference as to what has been taught.

When they ask; I answer then and there. If the answer is a long detailed one, I give a synopsis of it and get with the person later and answer to their complete understanding.
