Can someone tell me what poison ivy is please (and poison oak??)? Is it a reaction to the plant or an illness? I have no idea if we have that here in the UK.

Allergic reaction to the oils of the plant. It blisters and itches.

Yeah, and once you get poison ivy reaction, it can spread to areas of your skin that weren't touched by the plant. For some folks it is very hard to get rid of.

Great pics, Sarah!! Lovely!

We went to the mall and walked around today, which we hadn't done in ages. The mall is about a 40 minute drive and about 30 miles, so we don't go often. But I'm glad we did, it was a rainy morning and hubby is working today. I found some really cute stuff on clearance for the kids at JC Penney and Old Lady (as Isaac refers to it).

Awesome pictures, Sarah! I think you look great! And the kids are adorable, of course.

I didn't realize you had started blogging again. I haven't checked it in forever because you had stopped for a while.

One time, I got poison oak so bad (running through the woods with shorts on) that I got it on my face and eyes. My eyes felt like I had pink eye, and my lips were so swollen, it was terrible. I think I was 7 that time. I used to get it twice per summer, once camping and the other with at my aunt's ranch.

Well, I'll probably go to after hours care, tomorrow. I'm just doing it for hubby's sake. He thinks I might have some terrible flesh eating disease or something. I guess he's never seen poison oak/ivy before. But I'm trying to be good, trying to respect hubby's feelings of concern.

Nice avatars, Rachel and Sarah!

Oh Ruth. Poison ivy is my mortal enemy. Although, quite honestly, it's the weeping blisters and the disgustingness of it that bothers me more than the itch or the pain. Makes me want to crawl out of my own skin. Do you have calomine lotion? I found some clear medicated stuff this summer, which was slightly less messy than regular calomine.

Oh yes, I'm putting on the clear medicated stuff several times a day. I still don't get why they want me into the doctor's. It's not that bad. Kaiser is not the type of medical philosophy to panic, but they often like to bring you in for a 10 minutes look, just to be sure.

Now, right at Nathan's 15 month checkup he had a few dots on his skin, and both myself and the doc thought it might've been bug bites (even though the area was covered by clothing). The very next morning he'd exploded all over his torso; some parts were solid red. They hauled him in ASAP and I saw the same doc as the day before. It was just a fast acting virus rash. But WOW did it move quickly.

Could it have been roseacea? That's what it sounds like to me...Has he had a fever recently?

More good news today!!! My sister is going to be a Mommy!!!! She's been trying 27 months now. So, so, so, so excited!!!!

Psst, Sandy...she tested from the same batch of tests I had my positive Esther test from. I still have a few from that batch, if you'd like them after R&R.

How wonderful Donna!

Well, Nathan had a virus at 15 months, that's what caused the fast-acting rash. We're still kinda dealing with a face rash around his mouth, but the antibacterial stuff they gave me helped a lot. The air is also very dry, so that probably aggravated the situation.

I do indeed have poison ivy/oak/sumac. They gave me some topical steroids to use if I wish. It will go away on it's own, and it's not dangerous. But dH feels better now that I had it looked at.

Donna - Congrats on your sister getting pregnant! That is wonderful!!!

Sarah - Your family pictures are beautiful!

Ruth - Sorry to hear you have poison ivy

Well, we had Friend Day today at church and it was a nice day. They had food catered and had different things for the kids after service. Hunter and I came home a few minutes ago because he needed a nap. Secretly I just needed some ALONE time too. I am enjoying our friends being here and getting to spend time with them so don't misunderstand me. But, I definitely needed a breather from people and I am definitely ready to have it just be us here. We have had a wonderful visit though and I am going to miss them not being here.

We started doing time-out with Hunter and though I have not seen any great improvement I can definitely tell he does not like it. I also can tell he is going to fight me on sitting there for a minute. I though feel a lot less guilt when I discipline with time-out than when I spank. I am still going to spank, but last resort. I hope that after a week or so he gets the concept and this can be our main form of discipline.

On a side note: All of the women I have spoken to from the book club absolutely love Redeeming Love...I am so excited to meet and discuss!

I started time outs with my ds at about 14 months. I don't know if he grasped it at the start, though maybe he grasped it in part because I only had to take him back there once, but it removed him from the situation, or from a confrontation with me, and personally I think that distance in both those cases was a good thing. For both of us. It gave me time to cool down and think properly how to deal with the situation in the best way possible.

We've only been using spanking (more like one or two swats) for dangerous/violent offenses. We don't use spanking for simple defiance, unless it is really egregious.

I am certainly not perfect in my execution of timeouts, but when I've used them, they do seem to make an impact. I think they will be a very good tool in the future. I think you're on the right track, Chelle. Keep up the good work.

Donna, I'll take some of those tests!
Where online did you get them? I've been using my $$store tests, but I don't believe them.

It is also chilly here, we've had a fire almost every day for the last week...at least in the night and morning, that's when it's chilliest!

Whooohooo, one week until Thanksgiving! ROAD TRIP!!
Ok, I need tips....making a 13 hour drive with a 13month old... suggestions?

Yolanda - Do you have a portable DVD player? Hunter is not a huge tv/movie watcher, but road trips are definitely the time when he will watch. We also bring snacks, books, and juice. When Hunter gets fussy a lot of times I try to entertain him by getting in the back seat with him, but sometimes when all else fails we just have to ignore it. If it is at all possible plan to stop at a rest area to allow time for him to stretch his legs and play for a little bit.

Chelle- I can understand needing time out. I am glad you have enjoyed the time with them though. I hope Hunter gets the point of time outs soon for you :) I am thinking I need to do something different with Grace...

Yolanda, I'd drive when it's close to his bedtime. You and hubby could take turns sleeping and driving. I think it's better to be tired than to have to stop constantly when the baby is bored. Where you going?

I missed yo's post...

I too say make stops, and time it at night time that way he will be sleeping for most of it and you can take turns sleeping in the car. Or don't do a whole 13 hours, but break it up by staying somewhere over night..

Stina have you heard from your mum?
