Those photos are amazing! The one with the man up to his chin in flood waters, standing next to a drain he finally has opened, was my favourite I think.

I don't live in the city of Houston, and I'm not a huge fan of its mayor Bill White (who I'm more than sure will be in the running for Texas governor), but this episode puts him in high esteem with me for the moment. It had been 12 hours since ice had gotten to the POD that precipitated this exchange! And what are Forestry folks from Georgia doing managing distribution of supplies in the Houston area? Shouldn't someone who knows the area be in charge? FEMA STILL needs major overhaul!

fema's messed up...now they're letting all the leftover ice melt. I can think of many church's and homeless shelters that could use that ice.

FEMA is the biggest waste of resources. They really messed up with Gustav. At least Bobby Jindal was in charge this time and got things done in spite of FEMA.

Yeah, well, we had Rick Perry. Every hair on his head stayed in place during the storm. OH! Wait. That was because he stayed in Austin in his air conditioned taxpayer funded housing! I must note however that he did make it down this way for the photo op when Bush did his tour of the area. How nice of him...

I have to say from a person that lived in the Mandatory evacuation area of Southeast Texas, we left and it was a good thing that we did. I live on the Trinity Bay where the storm surge was over 20 feet of water. My town was devestated and so was the two towns south of us. Actually there is only two houses standing in those towns and our town has lost several houses due to flood or trees or tornadoes. I can say I hope the next time we have a hurricane that people evacuate Galveston as quickly as possible because I would hate to pull up to my house north of Galveston and see under it another dead body. This storm was not a pretty sight for us where we live. All I can say is that I thank God everyday that I wake up that he protected my family and friends- not necessarily there belongings or homes but at least their lives. I have family members that have lost everything they had.

all4aremine, that must have been so devastating to see. My uncles were part of the recovery after Hurricane Audrey and the stories they told about the devastation and loss of life was so sad. The people of Cameron got trapped by the storm surge coming in sooner than forecasted and hundreds died. A local meteorologist saw that the surge for Ike was going to do the same thing and was telling people to get out immediately. He was the first one here to see what was going to happen. We did not get a direct hit from Ike like your area but the surge was higher here than it was for Rita. It's going to take a while to recover and find a new normal. There is no getting back to normal.

All4, I'm so glad you obeyed the evacuation order! And thankful that your extended family survived. It must be hard to lose everything. I can't imagine.
