I've been through a couple of session of what is called "Theophostic Ministry" in the past. Initially, it seemed to help, but lately I've been wondering how much stock I should take in it.

What are other people's opinions on this?

FRom what I know (which is not much), I am not a big fan of it. I've heard of sessions going back in time, even into the womb to heal from the trauma of the womb. STrange. I prefer going to the heart of issues, which works in sin and suffering. Though, admittedly, I understand God is a God of time, who transcends time and can heal past wounds, in the present, and in the past...though, remembering trauma in the womb?????? I think we're stretching a bit...

It is a mixed bag. At its basis - finding out what lies you have believed and repenting and replacing them with truth - it is great. When it gets much past that it can get weird.

I'm with you guys. From my personal experience, I'm not overly convinced of it, either. The woman who I went through this with the first of two times claimed that she could "hear" God in her head (for lack of a better way of describing it) and that she would test the Spirit to find out if it was God she was hearing or not. Not sure how to explain it any better than that. It was from some stuff in Paul's letters regarding testing the Spirit to know if something is from God or not. I forget the verses and such. (You're supposed to ask the spirit if it comes in the name of Jesus Christ the Savior who came in the flesh.... I forget. Its been a while. Does God even talk to people like this????)

The second time (and that woudl be the last time), it was me who was hearing stuff from God and "testing." "God" told me stuff about someone from my past that I would be allowed to help, later in life.

I declined the offer to go back.

Just the comments by others in this thread leads me to believe that Theophostic Ministry is simply the application of secular new age practices to what is claimed to be a Christian environment ... a phenomenon growing rapidly in the Christian community.

Having read this article ... I key on one very important center of gravity that has been found in a lot of preaching these day ... the focus on feelings of victimization/hurt/wounding and concentrating on the person feeling better about themselves instead of focusing on sin, forgiveness and redemption in Christ.

In other words, the focus on self instead of focusing on Christ.

I would recommend finding a good Christian counselor instead (ask New Life or Focus on the Family for a recommendation) ... one who can help work on finding the locus of pain and guiding the client into turning to Christ for how to appropriately deal with the issue - asking for forgiveness from others, giving forgiveness to others, repenting of a sinful thought, word, deed, etc.

I will not EVER seek a Christian counselor. That's what I thought I was getting with theophostic people, and I agree, it seems like a lot of bunk. Christian counselors might do a lot of good for some people, but its not my choosing to see one.

I would strongly encourage you to reconsider.

You should check out nothetic biblical counseling. It is straight biblical application to the problem areas of life.

That said, which was it that made you decide to not go back, the counselor "hearing God" or what you yourself heard?
