We had this question this morning in our Men's Bible study that I thought was great and wanted to see what the community here thought...

Which do you think wields the greatest influence in our culture, in terms of shaping public opinion?

PureLight -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/9/2008 9:17:05 AM)

The entertainment industry. It has become our culture and truly I do not think any other era truly personified 'pop' culture. Quickly the sound is made and before you know it, it's already over.

I agree.

The greatest influence on our culture?

It's the millions - hundreds of millions - of people who get up every day, go to work, earn their pay, and come home in the evening, and all they really want is some assurance of stability:

That their bank accounts are safe
That there will be a doctor when their kids get sick
That the police and fire will come when they call
That their government will not get them, and their sons/daughters, into a shooting war for less than a good purpose

More coming - I'm late for a meeting.

Smooth talking leaders making promises that they are not held accountable for.

The ear tickling words of wisdom from our so-called religious freedom.

The sleeping American who has been led as a sheep to slaughter, because they have been deceived by megalomania.

The ever so slight interference running it's course through the lead by the nose politicians fulfilling their own agenda.

A very few ever question.... When they do, they are viewed as extremist, the enemy.

So I would say politicians, religion and of course the enemy coming in to steal, kill and destroy.

Entertainment industry hands down!

People emulate the style of dress and behaviors they see on TV. As our celebrities become ruder and cruder so has society. TV has crossed a line that it should not have been allowed to cross.

P31W -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/9/2008 10:37:46 AM)

Media as a whole not just the entertainment part of it.

stamper_ben -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/9/2008 10:42:03 AM)

I for one, refuse to let the thought that any "entertainment" industry can have that sort of influence on society or culture.

Another thread here has had me thinking about how the "common man" is often overlooked in their impact on society. I think especially of the book I recently read - Flags of Our Fathers - and how the men in the photo on Iwo Jima were idolized and made hero's, but they themselves were well aware of just who the real hero's were and tried to make that point in the war bond tours they were forced to endure, that the true hero's were ALL of them on that island, and especially the ones who did not make it out of the battles alive - THEY were the ones to look at as hero's.

That same thought is true not only for the fighting men on a Pacific island, nor those storming a beach in France, or those in a Southeast Asian jungle, nor a Middle East desert, but it exists in each and every one of us, and when the need arises we ordinary people can be capable of some extraordinary influence on those closest to us, our family first and then our friends and neighbors.

So, I really would have to agree with this;

the entertainment industry and the media in general. It dominates people's lives and it is such a lie.

WesP -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/9/2008 1:35:56 PM)

I would have to say our close family members. Consider this: our children grow up in the environments that we provide for them. If we join in the celebration of secular activities such as media presentations that are not wholesome, churches that do not teach the true gospel, educational tools that attempt to call the biblical teachings into doubt, etc., we are eroding their abilities to live and act as they should. Much of the horrible things that happen today can be attributed to how children are brought up. Our culture is increasingly adopting characteristics that are totally against Christ's examples.

rcjames -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/9/2008 1:48:09 PM)

Sadly I would think that "Political Correctness" has had more influence than anyother single thing in the last 3 or 4 decades.

It has greatly influenced the other three choices, the entertainment industry first, the education system next, and now it rears its ugly non-Scriptural head in many of our Chruches.

Thanks
RC

I would also say the entertainment industry. You can just group the media in that as well. It's the constant barrage of commercials making you believe you need to have something to be complete. It can also be the so-called "Joneses" who make you think you have to outdo something they do.

tcasboy -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/9/2008 3:26:11 PM)

Technology. The Internet, instant worldwide communication, etc.

I have to agree!! TV, R and X-rated movies (both on TV & in Theaters), Music., some Computer games and U-tube, and etc.

SonInMe1 -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/10/2008 8:50:53 AM)

I voted...other.

Its money and what people do to seek it. Or keep it. In every aspect, the good or the bad, it almost always goes back to...money. At lkeast in American culture.

Now, after saying that there is one bigger influence that our country overlooks and maybe has forgotten. Its the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit has inspired mankind since that day of pentacost 2000 years ago. I believe democracy and freedom and personla responsibility were all Holy Spirit inspired ideals. Generosity and compassion and helping your neighbor all came from Holy Spirit indwellt people.

Yes, God....is the greatest societal influence....for those who believe and for those affected by those who believe.

Good question with varying responses.

I can only speak for the UK where I live; but I suppose my comments apply elsewhere too.

The greatest influence in modern societies (world-wide) has been greed. It saddens me that everywhere people are chasing material things - money, possession, fame, celebrity, influence, power etc ... and would do anything to achieve it.

Jesus did say we can't serve God and money (greed). I fear that large sections of societies world-wide have turned their back on God in favour of materialism.

Bob_George -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/11/2008 7:46:50 AM)

Well sadly the church was an influence on everything. Our laws are made in accordance to Judeo-Christian morality. Christian morality, is that an oxymoron?

And it is those same morals that guided those men and women I spoke of in my post, who over the decades have kept you free all around the globe.

We can only wish that were the full truth. We don't seem to look to history to learn from our mistakes, so as to not repeat them. (The world population as a whole, ignores the mistakes of days gone by).

Humans are a stubborn creation.

blue1914 -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/11/2008 11:43:58 AM)

Without a doubt (and because the Word of God told us this exact thing would happen) I would have to say the entertainment industry. We as a society are merrily skipping down the path to destruction with nary a word to the contrary-why-because of the modern day "bread and circus" of our "empire".

2 Timothy 3
Godlessness in the Last Days

1But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.

2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (sound anything like today?)

3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,(again, even REMOTELY familiar at all?)

4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God(to your question specifically, what is better attended-a Sunday morning service or the local sport's team's latest game?)

5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

deliveredarling -> RE: What has the greatest influence on our culture? (9/11/2008 11:48:33 AM)

Fritz, what did you and your bible study come up with? Anything not mentioned here?

well said...greed is the most insidious deceitful influence in the world today

Self. All other influences are simply derivatives of self.

Yep, that's what I think too. If the love of money is the root of all evil, this country is in deep, deep trouble. The mortgage mess, the credit crunch, corporate greed- these are all just symptoms of what is to come.
