FWIW, the Hindu perspective associates consciousness with seven focal points ("chakras"). A novel I read many moons ago, Simulcron III, put it this way: "Who has the bigger soul: the thyroid giant, or the amputee dwarf?" (in the novel, the irony is, the questioner was an avatar projected into the cybernetic world of the one being questioned!) I have an unusually high IQ -- slightly above-average intelligence, but strangely distributed. My mother recently died of end-stage Alzheimer's disease. Am I more human than Trig Palin? Did my mother lose her humanity towards the end of her life? How about my younger sister, who died in 1966, after suffering a head injury, and lingering in a coma for nearly six months? Should we agree with Pete Singer, "ethics" professor at an Ivy League school, and deny human status to children who fail to meet certain criteria after they are born? The German population is low in genetic defects. For a decade or more, "imperfect" infants were humanely put to sleep in the "Hitler room" most hospitals had. When you get the chance, read Walker Percy's novel The Thanatos Syndrome. A central character in this novel, a priest who also lives on a fire spotting tower, explains that "compassion leads to the gas chambers." I'd appreciate your prayers, friends, for my dad, who heroically nursed Mom during her final long illness. Mom may not have been able to talk back to him, but she was always "there" in some mysterious way, and he's lonely now.
