stampinlady -> The "How can a christian?" question. (9/6/2008 1:34:07 PM)

After reading spending waaaay to much time in the Eletion folder I kept thinking about that question. The same quesiton has been asked in this folder thousands of times, ok maybe not thousands, but you get the idea. Anyway, does anyone else think it's a kind of silly one?

We all come from differenmt denominations, backgrouds and diffeent levels of spiritaul maturity, right? So how can this questions be relevant?

Well, it depends on what the question is targeting. Some of them can be valid. Like, if someone were to ask, "How could a Christian say that Jesus isn't the only way?", that'd be a valid concern.
But I agree with your point. A lot of the time, our ideas of what is or is not a "good Christian behavior" is more based on our culture and personal experience, not on God's truth.

For me it is how the question is framed that concerns me. It implies more a sense of bewilderment and possible arrogance than a true desire to know. The fact that it is in the third person adds to that, as if one were really wanting to ask, "How can those people who profess to be christian . . .?" Of course, one doesn't ask it that way, because that is too obvious. It might br better to say, "Why is it that one does X?" or better yet, "Why do you do X?" After all, how can a christian ask it any other way?

I think it's rude (most of the time when I see people say it here). And I think most of the time when people do it, it's against TOS...some people will admit that then go on to say it anyway. I don't feel like we should judge whether or not a person is a Chrstian just because they view something differently or do not believe the exact same thing as another. Sometimes it can be valid though. Many times I see this happen when one person adamantly believes something is the Christian way to be, but then another sees it differently (and yes, they both believe in the same Jesus and same Bible, but have different interpretation...or many times one is adding to the Scripture)...then you see "Well, I don't see how a real Christian can believe ____." I just don't see how it's conducive; I'd rather just try to see why that person believes the way they do and see if there is a valid reason or if there isn't a valid reason, point them out to specific passages. We can actually learn from others if we step back a bit. I've learned plenty of things here from others...things that I didn't know were in the Bible (or things I thought the Bible spoke on but is silent), but for me to do so, I had to listen to the other person and not automatically tell them they aren't Christian for believing differently.

The question can be relevant, but most of the time here, I find it is just harmful and derogatory. It's more to belittle/hurt those who do not believe the same way as another or the majority.
