ORIGINAL: Thessa ^^^You must not have been watching the news lately. Well that's exactly what I'm saying. Fox News is telling everybody it's a close race and McCain has a good chance. But all you have to do is think about how close Kerry was in 2004. How much more of an inspiring and exciting candidate Obama is than Kerry. How much worse of a candidate McCain is than Bush. The reasons people voted against Bush in 2004 and the fact that McCain has the same policies people voted against in 2004. The fact that no one will laugh at you if you compare Obama to Kennedy and Reagan in the sense that he's an inspiring candidate and has made people exciting about voting in November because they know they'll be making a history changing vote. A vote for a better future. McCain can't compete with that.

What Obama is doing is exactly what Kerry tried to do and he failed as well. Kerry promoted change - only he used the word 'plan'. He would always say "I have a plan!" But to this day i dont think anyone knew what that plan was. The same with Obama. He talks about change but what exactly does he talk about changing? He just hates Bush. Plain and simple. If Bush's approval rate was higher than it is then Obamas plan would go in a totally different direction. Hes just telling people what he thinks they want to hear. And the only reason its worked so far is because of his race. Some people are excited that he may be the first black President - and i admit i was too at first. As you know (if you remember) on the other site we were on i said i voted for him when the primaries came around to my state. But then after that and after i stopped being excited about the speeches i started looking at exactly what he supported. I did research. And that just made him look very bad to me. And to alot of others. Then when that interview aired with Warren that was even worse. That was another reason Obamas popularity went way down. Hes just not at all on the same level as alot of Americans. Not at all. And the debates will proove that. So will the election in November.

I really think it's gonna be decided by who votes. If we get people that are voting on an emotional charge and want a charasmatic person to lead this country, Obama will win, this is an election that will be very tight i believe. G

I also believe the Bradley Effect will cause people to scratch their heads in dismay when they see McCain run away with an election that the polls indicated would be close. While people want to ignore the racial aspect of this election, but like the elephant in the room, it's there. Yes, folks will not vote for Obama because he's black and folks will vote for him because he is. Then there's the fact that he made it to this point in the first place. I agree 100% with Geraldine Ferraro when she said had Obama been white, he wouldn't have been elevated to this lofty position with such a thin resume of accomplishments. I believe a large part of the media's infatuation with him is because of his race. It's a story. Rush Limbaugh wondered during the primaries if the GOP would have the guts to aggressively go after Obama because of his race and fearing any frontal attack would be conscrued as racism. I believe that McCain's choice of Palin was made in part because his camp wanted someone who could play the victim while on the attack as well as Obama. -Julius

Racism does still rear it's head in America but I do believe a black man can be elected President -- I would have voted for Colin Powell in a heartbeat because I trust his judgement, experience and for the most part we agree on most of the issues. It would be easy for me to vote for Powell. As for McCain's pick of Gov. Palin, first off, she is qualified, a reformer and I agree with her views on issue. Although it's gotten much better in just my generation, you act like sexism isn't real -- heck, in a earlier thread you were bragging about your sexism. McCain simply made a smart pick. Do you really fault McCain for using good strategy -- after all that is part of being a good leader. Do you really want Obama to win simply because he's black or do you want him to actually win the campaign?

I'm not voting for him. I've said many times I don't believe he's qualified to be president from his resume alone. I don't want him to win because he is SO unqualified, I believe his presidency would be such a disaster and would preclude another black person from being considered for a long time. I know I've defended him in some of my posts because I believe that although he's not presidential material, people shouldn't try to destroy the man. Maybe I just feel sorry for him. - Julius

For the record, I don't view Obama as a bad person. Simply not the best choice to be president. And also, for the record, this is going to be a ground-breaking election no matter what happens that is opening doors and changing perceptions. I'll predict if not this time there will be a black president within this current generation.

And also, for the record, this is going to be a ground-breaking election no matter what happens that is opening doors and changing perceptions. I'll predict if not this time there will be a black president within this current generation. Well, unlike past "door openers" like Jackie Robinson who was thoroughly vetted and prepared for what he was going to face, Obama was not the right person to stand at the door. For example, he should have known his church would have been an issue. That was truly a "duh" moment. This may sound offensive to some, but whatever black person opens the door to a profession where the acceptance of white people is necessary, must be totally acceptable to a majority of white people. Obama is NOT acceptable to the majority of white people. Black people don't decide elections. Neither do whites in the big cities. Small town rural whites in the heartland decide elections. Those that "cling to guns, etc.". If Obama dosen't know it now, he will on the morning of November 5th. - Julius

I haven't decided who gets my vote; I may still vote for Ron Paul or Bob Barr. I have not ruled out either McCain or Obama, either. I always base my own vote on whose economic policies are most beneficial to me personally. I never EVER vote because of a candidate's position on social issues. All that being said, I am almost certain the the winner will be Obama. I like Sarah Palin's politics (mostly), and I find her family quaintly amusing, and I see how she's (temporarily) fired up the GOP base. I don't think it will last though. Talk about the polls and convention bumps and all: during and immediately after the RNC, McCain should have been three to seven points ahead of Obama. Instead, Barak is taking the lead in key states. Obama will win PA, although it will be close. PA loves Ed Rendell, and he will deliver the state, based largely on Pittsburgh and Philly, and the all-important Philly suburbs that are often GOP but slowly turning Democrat. I wonder what Rendell's reward will be? Secretary of Commerce, maybe. Iowa for Obama too. The real battleground will be Ohio.

I think before the RNC, Obama was the favorite in polls and McCain's camp was losing steam and support. Post RNC and the Palin speech, it will be close. If the Reps can maintain steam ahead and take away some of the luster of Obama, by showing he was relying greatly on speaking abilities and not a resume full of comprehensive leadership experience (his strengths are in working with minority rights and ethics reform and having a popular position on universal healthcare, but so much on foreign policy...he's seen as never being tested in that important area in his prior experience), then they can chip away at the lead and possibly overtake Obama. It will be close, because as much as the Reps are energized now with a new image of McCain and admiration of Palin, the big issues is still the economy. Many people believe McCain's tax cuts for large corporations and decreased spending on public welfare will not sit well with Americans. (though drilling is good) ....McCain/Palin can certainly attack Obama's lack of comprehensive experience to be in Oval Office, which is true. Obama is experiences, but not in a well-rounded way like McCain. But given McCain's prior history of agreement with the Bush regime, it is a challenge to distinguish himself as a better leader on domestic issues. Here's how it could look (to viewers, not me....): McCain (+ foreign policy, + character + non-partisan work, + tackling "old-school" Washington do-nothing spenders/corruption/ - domestic concerns, - speaking ability, - age) Obama (+ domestic issues, + character, + speaking ability/age/likeability, - foreign policy experience, - executive experience) I think it'll be a close call. If McCain/Palin continue their direct attacks on Obama and Obama loses luster and people starting looking wide-eyed at McCain (despite his ties to Bush), then McCain/Palin could take over in the end of a close race.
