I'm going to bed. I just can't stay up, if I try, I'll fall asleep. I'm recording McCain's speech (starting now) and I'll look forward to discussing it here tomorrow.

But I've got to get something off my chest before I go to bed. I recognize better than anyone good propaganda when I see it. But, all that considered, it disgusts me that we're even at this point - approximately half of this country would be duped by a smooth talking uber-liberal with no background, qualifications, or any merit whatsoever over an American hero. He's not a perfect man, he's a bit of a crotchety, cranky, geezer sometimes...but you can't question his intentions or his motivations. You can't question his guts or his courage. This is a trying time in the history of our country...but how can we be so far adrift from what makes America what it is? (or what it was maybe) How can we be so blind and foolish and superficial as a nation? We deserve what we get, to some extent. But I pray enough Americans still have enough sense to send us down a road to maybe rediscover our greatness and recover from the frivolous, weak, pathetic mess we've created for ourselves the last couple of decades.

I see the two choices in this campaign like a rock v. a feather. I just think it's disgraceful for a man like McCain to be running against a hollow, empty man like Obama. That might make some people mad. Sorry. But the biggest sacrifice Obama ever made for his country was not taking a job on Wall Street - are you kidding me?!?!?

McCain's speech is so far so great! You know just listening to him I am all of a sudden saddened to think of what our country will come to without the "old - timers" around one day who know what being an American is all about. I think of my uncle who was a pilot in WWII and to this day bleeds red, white and blue.

Think what you will about what we're doing in Iraq but I think there's still some men and women made of that same stuff over there right now.

Thoughts on McCain's speech.

Overall the speech was certainly good enough. The first two thirds of it were not as good as Obama's nor Palin's (nor Bill Clinton's for that matter). But it certainly did the job of painting McCain as a patriot and a reformer who'll get DC to work for us but the oratory was average. But the last third, when he told the story of his POW experience and how he grew as a person because of it then the end where he spoke of serving a cause greater than ourselves (which in his case is America), was as good as anything I've heard during the convention cycle period.

The crowd stepped on McCain's payoff lines (usually referred to as applause lines) like they did with Palin last night by applauding wildly during the set up lines. McCain didn't handle it as well as Palin did last night (although she could only do so much, premature cheering kills flow & momentum). The crowd also did McCain no favors by shouting down the protestors in the gallery (as opposed to ignoring them as McCain requested). That also disrupted the flow considerably and made McCain's job tougher. But the crowd redeemed itself in the last third of the speech. Their well executed support helped McCain nail it.

I wish the RNC could have given the speech a more "town hall" feel. This is a format in which McCain excels. I don't know how they would have done that. The DNC put Obama in a great position by moving his speech to a huge stadium as Obama is at his best when making prepared speeches in front of large crowds. I wish the RNC could have done likewise and played on McCain's strengths but it is a tougher problem then just renting a stadium and getting some columns.

I thought McCain delivered a respectful and heartfelt speech...and appreciated the fact that he withheld the sarcasm. He's a class act...and a man of morality and integrity.... unlike so many others in the current administration

I still regret John McCain did not win the 2000 Republican nomination. The country and the party would be in much better shape today if had.

Hubby and I were starting to get concerned about the third or fourth protester. Hubby was like "what's WRONG with security? If one of those guys had a gun..." We're also a little concerned because at least one of the protesters appeared to have on RNC identification, and we were hearing earlier that there were plans by some of the protest groups to kidnap delegates, so we hope everyone is okay. They didn't seem to have nearly as much of a handle on things as the Denver security did.

The speech was good, though, I thought. I thought his comments about unemployment assistance were really interesting. And, I thought that his personal comments about his captivity as a POW were really touching and told a lot about where he's coming from. I was also frankly a little shocked at the honesty when he talked about why the Republicans have lost the trust of a lot of Americans, and what they need to do to get it back.

I liked the speech. What it lacked in flare it more than made up for it in substance.

I agree that the townhall atmosphere is more in line with McCain's comfort zone and he excels in that arena. I think we got a little taste of that at the end when talking about his experience during the war. I believe he probably went off the teleprompter at that time.

Some notable moments for me:
1-He took time to give major props to NObama for his achievement. I think McCain is definitely a class act. When he told NObama that while they have their differences he still has respect for him as they are both American's. Classy. He did say after that "make no mistake however that we are going to win!"

2-At the end when McCain kept shouting "fight with me, fight with me" not stopping for the applause but rather kept going right over top of it. Very inspiring!

I know EXACTLY what you mean! My late grandpa also was in WWII and believe me he knew what it meant to be there. He knew what it meant to be an American.
This new way that Obama wants to go will destroy most of Americans and the pride that comes along with them.

I commend McCain for his candor, but you can't say this stuff while voting with Bush 90% of the time. That means that you, Senator McCain, are part of the problem.

Obama made a big deal about McCain lacking the judgment to lead, and apparently McCain agrees in full. It's also a little silly that he's trying to muscle in on Obama's "change" message.
