As to the Hair Metal haters thing, yeah the fashion was dorky, but not all of the music stunk. Sure, you've got lousy bands like Poison and WASP, but there was a lot of Zeppelinesque amped up blues that was really great. One thing you didn't see was bands with two guitarists, neither of which could play lead, like you see today.

My biggest complaints with hair metal was that it too often imitated the viceral sound of Zeppelin but lacked much of the depth, the lyrics were almost always asinine: girls and partying stuff and that the albums weren't as good as the singles. But they absolutely could play, no doubt.
I also think many of the bands of that time period get lumped in with the hair metal category but they didn't belong in that group. Or at least they weren't really the same. What fellowship hath Poison with Whitesnake?

But aside from looks, Poison's music was half way decent though: Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Something To Believe In. Ok, these are not really metal, but it is good song writing none the less.
Whitesnake had the #1 Here We Go Again and the #2 Is This Love? too.

True enough but Poison and Whitesnake are quite different style wise. That was my point.
Bands varying wildly, I suppose thats true of all genres.

I hate when they lump Def Leppard into the hair band category. They are just a great rock and roll band, even if they leaned a little glam rock with their musical style.

I never considered Def Leppard a hair metal band. They were around before the whole hair metal band thing really started. I remember Bringing On The Heartbreak being really big on Rock radio back in 1982. That was before I had my MTV.

That was a great song, but Photograph has to be my favorite. It's also near the top of my all time favorite songs list.
I think groups like Poison, Skid Row, Warrant and Cinderella are the definition of 80s hair band, in fact, they are pretty much interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. I may upset people, but I put Motley Crue in there, too.

Def Leppard was great on their first album/tour. Most of them were around 16, or so and really rocked. They were the opening act for Blackfoot on their forst tour.
Poison was just an embarrassment, especially in the power ballad dept. YUCK!
One of my kids likes to poke fun at the 80's, to which I tell him both AC/DC and Rush had their greatest success in the 80's.

I prefer 70s Rush to 80s Rush and ACDC would be the same except "Back in Black" slides in barely to the 80s.
The 80s had a certain charm to it but I prefer the 70s and 60s myself. Of course that doesn't include classic metal bands like 'Queensryche, Maiden, Priest, Helloween and Fates Warning among many others. That's some good stuff but it doesn't fall into the traps of 80s music (banal lyrics, inconsistent albums and excessively clean, wimpy production with no oomph).

Oh, man! You sound exactly like my son, who says AC/DC was never the same after Bon Scot died and that 2112 was the master work of Rush, not Moving Pictures.

I definitely agree with 2112 but Moving Pictures is my 2nd favorite (just over "A Farewell to Kings"). Not big on Rush's earlier stuff. Its OK but I like the mix of prog and heavy rock. The one knock I have on "Moving Pictures" is that it isn't quite raw enough.
"Back in Black" is the definitive AC/DC to me but they never reached those heights again IMHO. AC/DC with Bon Scott were more consistent.

The early 80's seemded like a time of musical promise to me. We had just defeated the evil powers of disco, there was no rap, and hard rock bands that I had been following for years, like the Scorpions, were catching on. What happened?

Hard rock became too popular, the record companies neutered it in an attempt to appeal to the masses. They robbed it of its power and polished it to a vomit inducing sheen. They failed to realize that hard rock wasn't popular in spite of its power and abrasiveness, it was popular because of them.
An interesting case study is comparing The Scorpions 1982 effort "Breakout" with its 1984 megasmash "Love at First Sting". I like them both but while "Sting" had better songwriting (IMHO) "Blackout" was the heavier, more satisfying rock record. Check the monster riff on "You Give Me What I Need" as compared to the buried lead flourishes on "Big City Nights" during the chorus. Both are great songs but "Big City Nights" and others on "Sting" lack the visceral punch needed in rock. "You Give Me What I Need", "No One Like You" and several others from "Blackout" flat out satisfy.

Right on the money, my friend. Blackout was their last good album (IMO) before falling into the overproduction trap. Scorpions is a classic example of a great, rough, angry, highly skilled band becomming a chick-rock band. BLUCK!

Actually, there was rap, but it was good back then. Sugar Hill Gang "Rapper's Delight", Grandmaster Flash, etc.

Def Leppard would have to be my favorite with Rock of Ages one of my fave songs....... 
I didn't know about the show before hand either, I just stumbled upon it when it came on instead.
