Reminds me of when we were on our honeymoom. We stayed in a platform tent on St John. Hey--if you are going all that way, why stay in a generic hotel?! "The Store" was central command. You could buy groceries and etc, mail post cards, and just basically find out what what going on. While we were there, Hurricane Klaus was on the move. We knew that every so many hours reports would come in, and they were tracking. There were hurricane plans in effect--we couldn't evacuate the island but everyone would go to cisterns (during the storm) and then after the storm we would be evacuated. Well, one day we were in The Store when the report came in. They charted it but then wouldn't let us see where it was! Seems it was heading right towards St John and they didn't want anyone to panic... Well, within a few hours, Klaus headed back out to sea and fizzled out. And the saying became "Klaus, but no cigar!"

I was born in Mobile and we were too poor to leave when hurricanes came through. We'd go to Vigor High School and spend a few days and nights until the storm was passed and the all clear sounded.

My Uncle Fred took me out into the eye of the hurricane when I was about 6 years old. That was a very eerie experience. I'll never forget it.

If you ever watched 'A Perfect Storm', check out TS Hannah and Gus. They're on opposite sides of Florida and the forecast shows them meeting.

Here's an interesting map showing that.

We have a hurricane tracking chart on the refrigerator, but most of the time we just hang out our "Redneck weatherman" and see if he blows away to determine if it's a hurricane or not!

Yeah, we are watching Hur Gus pretty close. At one time the tracks had it following the same path as that little weather event we had 3 years ago (today) here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast...

...and I just started teaching at the SAME university I was at when Katrina hit--I taught one day, then Katrina...the first floor of the university (located on the beach just east of where the eye came ashore) was completely destroyed. You know, it just occurred to me. If we have another major hurricane that does a lot of damage to the university, they may just fire me...I get hired, big storm...

Oh dear, I sure hope that doesn't happen, Creation. My sister is in Louisiana and the Gustav is expected to hit them in two days. They were hit hard by Rita. I am very concerned about her.

Edited to correct error

I'll be praying for her. Where in Louisiana is she? If it was Katrina, not Rita that did the damage, presumably she is located somewhere between Slidell and Houma...the area south of New Orleans does not look good right now. Does your sister have someplace high that she and family can go? I have a phone number for a shelter in Natchez, MS if you want it.

Right now it looks like Gus will be far enough west of us that we will be OK--maybe some winds, but nothing major--unless it makes a jump to the east just before landfall, like many of the bigger storms. I'm going to really watch Hanna close; if she passes between the Keyes and Cuba coming into the gulf, she could be really big.

She lives in DeRidder. According to Mutinywxgirl, who is an expert in this stuff, my sister in the direct path of the hurricane and needs to get out by tomorrow. Yes, I would like the number for the shelter. We are working on finding a place for her to go. Mother just told me that CL (my sister) has a friend she might be able to stay with, but she doesn't know which state she moved to. (they met in the military) I have a friend near Littlerock, who I am trying to reach, but they aren't answering the phone and don't have voice mail. We are praying are sure the Lord will direct her where to take the family.

Actually, that map is showing tropical storm force winds for the next 120 hours. When Gus is making landfall, Hannah will still be just above the Bahamas.

Since I'm in the homeschool folder (and homeschooled my son one year), these storms have much material for all ages to learn. There's weather, economic impact, talk about fear/anxiety, importance of preparation, opportunities for prayer, impact of media on evacuation... and lives are saved (as compared to 100 years ago)...

To expand on what Michelle posted - no, that doesn't show them meeting. It ONLY shows that FL has about a 5-20% chance of experiencing TS force winds during the 120 hours from the time that the models were run and that map was put together. Gustav will be long gone inland in 120 hours.

The NHC site is GREAT for teaching kids about such storms.

My 76 year old mother, my 69 year old uncle and his wife, plus a huge extended family are all in Mobile and refusing to leave as of now. My mother actually lives in Daphne, on the water in a brand new home.

Of course, we all grew up there and this is nothing new to them.

Mobile is not going to impacted very much - it's going much farther west - they will only get TS force winds and little surge - not evacuation worthy.

I grew up (from 3rd grade on) on the TX LA border down by the Gulf, so we know lots of family and friends preparing for the storm too. As of now, they are not predicted to get it head on like they did a few years ago with Rita, but if it turns a bit more west they could. They will definitely still get the storm there though, just maybe not the eye or the flooding that the east side of the storm brings with it.

The National Hurricane Center is our "weather channel" this time of year. We only live about 150 meters from the beach, so we pay pretty close attention. We're on the Pacific side of Mexico where tropical storm Julio blew through last week. Lots of rain, some wind, 3 days later -- 13 million more mosquitos.

My youngest took some good photos of the cloud bank rolling off in the distance. Some of the pics are a little blurry, but because the colors are so awesome, I had to post them on our blog. You can see the pics here. I love the sunsets here after a storm!

Cynthia -- very glad to hear that your sis is safe and sound!

Lisa, keep praying. I am SO not liking the path this thing is taking. At first the tracks had it far enough west that we would not take too big a hit, but the current track has it coming in around Grand Isle, LA. If it does that 50 mile jump to the east that has been a characteristic of the major hurricanes I've experienced that came up this way, New Orleans could take a direct hit...and we would be back in the strongest part of the storm.

Yes, I know - I just saw - I'm reading the "discussion" right now on the latest advisory.

The only "good" thing is that the waters are a bit "cooler" right along the coastline, so it should weaken it just a bit, AND there is a bit of upper-level shear going on. That'll help - a bit. BUT, that said, we're still looking at this being a strong Cat 3 upon landfall.

It does not look good for the entire area - with it being a bit farther to the east (even by only a few miles). It's taking it into a much more populated area.

Believe me, I continue to pray - I can already feel that I'm kicking into "disaster mode".

He's just entering the "loop current" - meaning he should be intensifying right now.

Strength forecasting is the HARDEST thing to do in storms - the research we did in school showed that.....and it's not gotten any better.

as of this morning my family/friends are in the "tropical storm" area (highlighted blue).....so they are out of the thick of it, but most are already headed inland anyway.

I popped my head into this thread when I saw the subject thinking someone was looking for the charts and Poppa has had them pulled up.

Of course you are all on top of it.

Poppa suggested going to Intellicast (a weather site) and there is a radar map that shows Gustav, Hannah, and two other storm area as you look across to Africa. It is cool - if anyone wants a link, bug me later. It was neat to watch the storms 'form'

Intellicast is a good site, and one I use frequently.

Just so you all know my background - and why I'm so passionate about it - I have my undergrad degree in Disaster Management and did graduate work in Meteorology - specializing in hurricanes. Also, I am currently actively involved with my local CERT and a few other groups on my hometown (on the Gulf coast of FL). I am also working on a master's in Homeland Security/Security Mgmt, and doing my PhD in Disaster Mgmt.

My mother in Daphne, Alabama went out to my Uncle's house in Saraland for a few days. Her area floods quite easily (you can see the beach from her house) and she IS 76 years old. They have a generator, in case of a power outage.
