I buy ground ones in the section where the grains are found. I believe it's Bob's Red Mill brand.

Stacy,

Do you have a coffee grinder?

I ground my flax seeds in the grinder.

I put my flax seeds into the blender last; that way it helps ensure they actually get blended into the smoothie and not stuck down on the bottom near the blades.

Oh, and also, after I pour the ground up flax seeds, I also use a pastry brush to sweep the remaining seeds out of the grinder.

I have a coffee grinder that I bought for that reason, but when I went to wash it (according to its directions) it got water trapped in it that I could not get out. So, I determined it was not a sanitary coffee grinder since it couldn't properly be cleaned, and I haven't used it beyond the one time. lol

It's hard to say for sure if it's been working to add more stuff, since he's been doing a lot of hard, manual labor so his appetite is higher than normal, but we think it's been helping. I've been using a whole banana (actually two, since I make two days worth at a time then divide them between two cups, but anyway), a bit extra yogurt, and some raw oats. That seemed to help a lot except for when he was working outside in the sun all day.

Interesting enough, I'm running low on the hemp protein and used my rice protein instead this last time I made some and he didn't like it as much. The rice protein is vanilla flavored (natural vanilla added, no sweeteners) and the hemp is, well, hemp flavored. I guess he got used to that taste.

I've never washed my coffee grinder; I just brush it out with a pastry brush.
I do wash the "lid" though.

Hemp protein . . . Do you know if that has any soy it in? If not, I might try some.

Our coffee grinder has...well coffee grounds in it. Even with brushing it out, I'm sure the flax seeds would still taste like coffee. We keep meaning to buy another one just for spices, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Wendy's has icky fries!

The ingredients say: "100% raw organic hemp protein powder. NO hexane, gluten, dairy, lactose or sweeteners."

"Certified as organically grown and processed by QAI.
All seeds are Non GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms)."

Then the website has a whole section about soy's negative impact. So I think it's soy free. It's Nutiva brand that I have - just the plain protein ... not the flavored smoothie mix.

Plain, raw shelled hempseeds are good on salads too.

How big are hemp seeds? Like flax, sunflower, pumpkin, or almonds?

They're tiny. Closest to flax seeds, I guess. I don't have any flax seeds on hand at the moment to compare. They're more round, but closer in size to flax than sunflower seeds.
