Looking over the speech, I think he handled it brilliantly. Although I don't support BHO, I was expecting alot more from the speech. I reminded me of when a new movie is out, and how all of your friends tell you how great it is, so you watch it, all the while waiting for it to "get started", and it never does. That's what I took from it. Too many cliche's about "4 more years, of the last 8', and repeating the 'Joe Biden Amtrak 'talking points, there was no "shining city on a hill" in this speech IMO.

Actually, I think people are just disappointed that there were not as many rhetorical flourishes or as much fire in the speech. But I think we need to keep in mind what Obama had to do. You make a good point but here is what I'm thinking. One, whether fair or not, often times a performance is judged (and speech making is a performance) not by its inherent quality or lack thereof but rather by how it fares compared to the expectation of what was going to happen. This is why Obama was not well served by whomever (if it was himself or someone else) decided that he would deliver this speech in a venue that houses 75,000 (attendance reports were 85,000). The venue and Obama's past performances simply raised the hype andexpectation to a point where nearly no one could meet it. I thought if anyone could do it then Obama could (as he is an excellent orator) but I think he fell short despite a great effort. The second problem was the speech's function. Being a nomination acceptance speech on an important anniversary with the doubts about Obama's perceived lack of substance (reality is not important in this particular analysis) he simply had too many contradictory goals to do any of them very well and still give a soaring performance. When he rocked the 2004 DNC his goal was simple, to introduce himself and excite the crowd.. That amount of leeway allowed him to deliver the speech that propelled him to political stardom. Not to mention that hearing Obama's best lines on 24 hour news soundbytes constantly dulls their impact. BTW: ManimalX, Thanks for the kind words on my initial reaction to Obama's speech.

I agree with you, tafkam. henny: Regardless of personal politics, I just don't see how Obama's speech was a "coming of age" in any way. It was a common political speech. It was "the other guy is bad, I am good and I will change things"... the same speech politicians have given since the beginning of politicianing.

The substance of the speech was basic (it had to be, no political speech should come across as a lecture), but Obama articulated 29 policy positions, and (IMO) delivered it masterfully on a rhetorical level. Toward the end, I was almost mesmerized when Obama made his allusion to the anniversary of MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech 45 years prior.

but Obama articulated 29 policy positions, and (IMO) delivered it masterfully on a rhetorical level. How many of them were new or surprising? Few at best. But he did manage to turn the clock back a bit and restate some of the policies that got him so popular with his liberal base in the first place. I think that was a plus for his candidacy. I'll be interested in what the polling says today and in a week. In order to analyze the effects of this speech further it would have been useful to have the Republican Convention a couple of weeks later. I'm not saying that should have happened, only that it will be impossible to fully understand how the speech affected the voters because you can't separate it from whatever effect the RNC will have.

I don't think the Dems want a "shining city on a hill." That wouldn't be politically correct (the "downtrodden" would need to look up at it) nor would it be environmentally friendly (think of all the material and energy wasted to create it). -Dave quote:

ORIGINAL: tafkam The setting and the crowd were impressive, the speech was not. True, Obama knocked it out of the park, but only because he had had a lot of practice...it was virtually the same Obama speech we've been hearing for months, with one or two new flourishes thrown in to jazz it up a little. Tracking polls all week have indicated little or no movement for the Obama camp, nothing resembling a "bounce"; I'm curious to see what the next day or so brings..... Well, I thought Obama's speech was a masterpiece, as did many others. Obama now leads McCain by 6 points: http://www.gallup.com/poll/109897/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Moves-Ahead-48-42.aspx However, I really like the Palin pick by McCain, and I think a lot of women will, so who knows where the gallup poll will be next week? It's so exciting! Peace and God bless,

I agree. I thought that was one of Obama's best speeches ever. If he can debate like this, he will have no trouble in November. It should have been good, he's been refining the same lines over and over ad nauseum for a year and a half.....

You mean like the ad nauseum of "drill here, drill now, drill, drill, drill" or perhaps the "when I was a POW" stories? Or Kerry, who if you asked him what he had for breakfast would remind you "Hey, did I mention I served in Vietnam?" We could run around this particular circle all day if you like...but we were expecting that with all the pomp and circumstance surrounding this event, that maybe, just mayeb, we might get something just a tad more informative than the same tired stump speech. (And yes, I will expect more from McCain next Thursday night as well....one more "my friends" and I'm gonna take a hostage..")

Obama outlined over 20 specifics in his plan. How much do you know about McCain's plan? Did you see the speech? Read the transcript?

Obama outlined over 20 specifics in his plan. ...and yet some people expect more specifics in a 42 minute speech? Obama defined who he was...what his governing philosophy is...and he did go after McCain directly. Bring on the debates.
