That would be an insult to Sparta, wouldn't it?

When I asked my friend Brad what turning 40 was like for him, he answered "The view ain't no different."

Actually it starts to get a little fuzzier. Before I turned 40 I had perfect 20-20 vision and a friend of mine told me when I turn 40 that will change.

I laughed it off but sure enough ever since I turned 40 my vision has gotten worse each year. I think he cursed me to tell the truth.

Happy B-Day!

Well, not considering that tonight's halftime show will reenact the Battle of Thermopylae.

Actually, my vision has gotten steadily worse (astigmatism) since my teen years. Now when I'm without my glasses, I'm almost like Velma from Scooby-Doo (blind as a bat).

Thanks for the b-day wishes.

Yes, with Obama meeting with the Persian King and talking him into disarming and going home, after sending the three hundred back to Sparta to do community organizing.

Come to think of it, I think that is one of his stated policies.

Actually, McCain will be playing the role of Persian King Xerxes, and tell Obama (as Leoniadas): "My friends, we will blot out the sun with our arrows" to which Obama will answer "Then we will fight in the shade...for change."

Now, that is hilarious - they definitely need to do that on SNL.

From what I understand, the Greek-style decor is intended to mimic the White House's similar architecture - not the Acropolis. IMO, the event's staging should be almost Spartan.

Actually, it's suppossed to mimic the Lincoln memorial, where Martin Luther King gave the "I have a dream" speech.

Today's the 45th anniversary of that speech, and I imagine Obama will allude to it in some way in his own speech, so I suspect that the greecian collomns are meant as an homage to that speech's location.

I can just imagine the outrage if McCain gave his acceptance speech in front of, say the Iwo Jima Memorial!

Excellent point. Or even something shaped like the Vietnam memorial.

Those are war memorials.

If it's the intent of the Obama camp to echo MLK speaking before the Lincoln Memorial (which honors a president, not fallen war dead) in 1963, it refers to a historical event.

I think it's kind of moot now anyway.

I just got a good look at the stage on CNN and it really doesn't resemble anyone place or monument, as much as it's just vaguely "governmental."

It's vaguely reminiscent of any state capital around the USA as much as it is of the White house or Lincoln memorial.

It sort of reminds me of the movie "Jewel of the Nile" when the phony guy was trying to convince the masses that he was the Jewel; when of course he was not.

Thanks

I just finished watching MLK III give a little speech. He said that his father would, "be proud of Barack Obama and proud of the party that nominated him!". I seriously doubt MLK would be proud of a candidate who supports, oh let me think, the organization that was established to purge the black "plague" from the land (Planned Parenthood). I doubt MLK would be proud of a candidate who plays the race card when it suits his purposes. I doubt MLK would be proud of a candidate whose "content of character" could barely fill a thimble.

We've already discussed this here.

I know MLK is being discussed elsewhere, but this was specifically in response to a speech just given at the DNC, which is why I posted it here :)

I was kinda disappointed. It's not all that attractive. I was expecting some big extravagant thingy. Gee whiz anyway.

Al Gore just spoke.

He was every bit his electrifying self -which means not very.

Although, he did turn it up a notch to at least a 4, in comparison to the flat 2 he was running on in 2000.

He emphasized the environment, and it was his usual content over flair, although he got in a few good shot's at McCain's shifts in his stances on the environmental issue.

His comparison of Obama's experience in politics and past to Abraham Lincoln's experience in politics and past when he took office, was absolutely brilliant, though.

Democrats need to pick up on that talking point.

Obama said he saw some of the fallen heroes in the audience for the Memorial Day (?) speech. Hmmmmm.

Talk about hypocrisy!

In the first 10 minutes NObama managed to do the very things he complains about when it's done to him.

He took McCain out of context when he said McCain believes that the middle class is anyone who makes under $5mil. Everyone knows McCain said that as a joke, he said so himself immediately after making that comment.

Also, he quoted McCain's ex-economics adviser's statement about a psychological recession and everyone is just a whiner. McCain denounced that statement and fired his adviser.

What a hypocrite!

Oh and this was right after he talked about how his mother would get on to him when she caught him mistreating anyone. How she would ask how he would feel if it were done to him. How that message resonated with him the rest of his life.

Yeah right!

I was actually looking forward to hearing Obama's speech. What a disappointment. For a guy who is supposedly some legendary orator, he sure used a lot of words to say very little.

Some thoughts written down as I was listening:

He should have just had a caveman come up and say, "GEORGE BUSH BAD! CHANGE GOOD!", then wave his club around and leave. That would have cut his speech time in half!

At least he picked his old racist granny up off of the street. She was still lying there after he threw her under a bus a few months back to get away from Rev. (not so) Wright. She is one of his heroes now, dontcha know?

Obama's energy proposals were pretty much echoes of what Conservatives and Republicans have already been proposing, minus the essential core of drilling for new oil everywhere we can find it. Solar and wind and the like are great, but we need a bridge to get us to the point of their widespread use. The Conservative answer of "all of the above" has been on the table for quite a while now. At least he didn't push tire gages again.

I can't comment much more because I changed the channel to Spongebob out of boredom.
