I thought I'd start a thread in case anyone wants to talk about it this week.

Here's the basic line up:

Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama's older brother (introducing her)

TUESDAY, August 26

Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, a U.S. Senate candidate
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius
Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick
Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer
Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey
former Transportation Secretary Federico Pena.

WEDNESDAY, August 27

Biden
Bill Clinton
Tom Daschle
Evan Bayh
John Kerry
Jay Rockefeller
Bill Richardson

THURSDAY, August 28

I'm watching it online on CNN right now, and Ted Kennedy is about to speak.

My wife and I were only able to catch Michelle Obama's speech and I have to agree with her that Michelle is a better speaker than her husband.

I've heard that the first day was more of a democratic love-fest than a republican bash-a-thon. That speaks well for the democrats as I don't think the republicans could spend 10 minutes together without slaming the democrats. We'll have to wait and see what the rest of the week holds.

Mark Warner who was one of Virginia's best governors (and soon to be state senator) is the keynote speaker tonight so I hope to watch that.

Even James Carville said about last night "If the Democrats have any vision at all for this nation, they sure as (heck) kept it hidden tonight".

I wiatched most of it and was singularly unimpressed, even by Michelle Obama (whom most conservatives said did pretty good).

But to be fair, I'm not expecting to be any more impressed by the GOP convention next week, so....

It'll be very interesting to see what Sen. Clinton has to say tonight.

Last night was mostly boring and a total waste of air-time. I think Caroline Kennedy did a good job of presenting Ted, but I'm sure that was easy since she has always been so close to him.

I think the results overall showed a lot more of the Democrat's weakness rather than their strengths.

I heard on the radio yesterday that the Rupublicans are holding an event (or series of events) in Denver at the same time as the DNC. Is that very common? Do the Democrats have something similar planned for the twin cities the first week of September?

Michelle Obama showed her softer side Monday night at the Democratic National Convention, declaring “I love this country” and presenting a picture-perfect image of her family on the stage in Denver.
She praised her husband as a uniter who can lead the country in a new direction, but she also used her headlining address to refine her public persona and to quiet charges from Republicans that she is somehow unpatriotic.

Love of Country & Family.
Yep, to a Republican definitely a sign of weakness.

I thought it was clear that the convention's first evening (at least as far as the big speakers were concerned) was intended to set an emotional tenor for the overall event, not to establish anything in terms of major policy (yet).

After Michelle's speech, I was baffled by the utter stupidity of Karl Rove and Bill Kristol on Fox when they complained that she did not address any big issues in-depth.

That was never the intent of her speech.

Does anyone know what all the protesting outside the convention is about? I have heard there are some nuts who want to re-create 1968. As far as I can see, there is very little similarity of issues between 1968 and today. What is their complaint? Anyone know?

It's not terribly clear. It seems the protestors are a mish-mash of people marching for environmental issues, in addition to war-related topics.

Speaking of 1968, I was born just outside Chicago on the night (Aug 29) of the convention with the worst rioting.

I also know a guy who was with the National Guard that night, and he claims the mayor (Daley The First) gave them full reign to use live ammo against the protestors - but that no one wanted to do that because it would have created an even greater disaster.

Definitely a group of intellectual with a really valid protest .

As pointless and counter-productive as the 1968 Chicago riot was, these folks look even more pointless.

Yeah, that was a pretty volatile time. I understood all the anti-war stuff and the fact that RFK was just assasinated, taking out the front-runner, but looking back I think they really hurt their cause.

Unless I missed something, this election has almost no comparison of issues to protest over.

....yea. Heaven forbid that she actually convey to the American people her life story and values. I guess none of that matters to the likes of Rove and Kristol.

I heard somewhere that there was concern that she was being to aggressive in her opinions and some were fearing it was going to turn into a 2 for 1 ala Billary.

I don't know if that was the reason, but that would be a good reason for her to avoid 'issues'.

It would be fun in an almost lurid way, but their opinions really shouldn't matter; they are not on the ballots.

Recreate '68 is basically an ultra-liberal group. They're the ones we've heard the most about on the news since they were screaming the loudest about "free speech zones" and so forth. There are also anarchists here, as well as quite a few conservative groups. The thing about Denver is it's right between Boulder to the north, which is ultraliberal, and Colorado Springs to the south, which is ultraconservative, and for once they're not driving through Denver to go protest on the other side's "turf", they're meeting in the middle for the DNC.

They arrested over a hundred people last night, apparently. Pepper sprayed a few of them. Apparently some of the anarchist protesters decided to block traffic and then bolt for the 16th St Mall (which, for those who don't know Denver, is a 16-block strip of shops along a street that is closed to everything but pedestrian traffic and special free-to-ride shuttles, it's the part you see when they talk about "pedestrians" downtown and show a bunch of walking people, usually.) There seem to have been more protest-spectators than actual protesters involved, at first look.

Denver is usually pretty tame, we don't really "do" riots... worst you will get is drunk fans setting bonfires and vandalizing cars if we win something big. Our police don't really have a lot of experience with this stuff. So, I guess they're on hyper-alert. Apparently tonight is supposed to be worse, but there's nothing on "breaking news" yet and looking east there's no smoke, so I guess so far so good. ;)

Has anyone read the "soft" Michelle's college thesis and her remarks on race and her priorities?

She didn't fool anyone last night who reads beyond the hype. I am beginning to see why many Democrats are deciding to vote Republican. The less of two evils is actually looking better by the day.

http://blogs.tampabay.com/bizarre/2008/08/man-reacts-nega.html

quote:

The man stood outside his RV, yelling and shooting a gun into the air. When Pasco sheriff's deputies confronted him, he ran inside and wouldn't come out, according to Tampabay.com.

That started a six-hour standoff late Monday night between the man, whose name was not released, and authorities, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll said.

SWAT team units arrived later and surrounded the RV, Doll said. As the situation entered the early hours of this morning, SWAT team members fired riot gas into the man's home. He still wouldn't come out, Doll said.

Finally, about 5 a.m., he exited his RV and was taken into custody. The cause of his displeasure, according to Doll, was Michelle Obama's speech last night at the Democratic National Convention.

"Man reacts negatively" is quite the understatement here.

Also, I can't see the convention in China, but I hear that Brian Schweitzer is 50% awesome and 50% crazy and I eagerly await the Youtubing.

Hillary is talking about being chased by torches through the woods; I think she just went over the hyperbole cliff.

I also thought it was funny to hear her emphasis on women's sufferage - I mean 87 years of the right to vote, and we end up with Hillary? That's an argument for the repeal of the 19th Amendment!

Was it just me or was Obama simply tacked on as an afterthought to Hillary's half hour of self congratulation?

I thought Hilary's speech was amazing.

People always talk about what a great speaker Obama is, and he's good, but I've always thought Hilary was better.

There wasn't a single misstep and she hit all the right notes. I don't even think she used a teleprompter, and it seemed to me like she had the whole thing memorized (I've said it before, but she's like some sort of inhuman political machine -i.e. the "bionic politician").

I thought the Harriet Tubman lines she quoted were genius, especially within the context she used them, i.e. in passing the torch from her own campaign to Obama's.

Was it hyperbolic? Perhaps. But that's what makes a good speech. I'm as cynical person you'd ever meet, but when I heard that I totally wanted to rush outside in my pajamas and start a political action committee. Which is the whole point of a good convention speech, it's supposed to get the blood boiling.

She had a few other good lines too -the Bush/McCain Twin Cities crack, and the "sisterhood of the traveling paint-suits" line.

Anyways, I don't think there's any doubt where her allegiances lie after this.

Her comments in which she asked those who voted for her whether they voted for he because of her name, or because of the issues she supported, and then suggested that the only way to further the issues she campaigned on is by voting for Barack Obama, I think was a very effective way of pushing her supporters towards Obama.

She did everything she needed to do in terms of uniting the party and going on the attack against McCain.

The only danger, I think, is the possibility that her speech might upstage Obama's on Thursday, but we'll see.

Anyways, I admit that I've always been an unabashed Hilary fanboy, so please excuse the gushing adoration for just this one post.

I promise I'll be back to my usual cynical self in no time.
