I decided we need a thread more as a test of sincerity than anything – many people seem able to see the weaknesses of one candidate while ignoring those of the other. The purpose of this thread is simply to allow people to point out the weaknesses of the candidate they are supporting as an honest acknowledgement of the shortcomings of any candidate, and as a demonstration of one’s ability to think critically and objectively.

If you have no preference at this time, please don’t post – and it’s fairly clear who the regulars support, so we will know if you aren’t following the constraints of this thread, and you will be dealt with accordingly as being off topic.

To get it started, one of my concerns about McCain is that he has at a number of times in his campaign been too compromising, often diminishing conservative principles for the sake of ‘reaching across the aisle’, as was the case with McCain/Feingold and the immigration debate. I worry as a President he might be willing to continue such compromises to the detriment of a truly conservative administration.

McCain's views on immigration bother me quite a bit, and as Jack said, his apparent willingness to compromise just a tad too much in the interest of reaching across the aisle.

But for me, McCain is pretty much an also ran...he's tried for the big chair at least a couple of times and never made it. It concerns me that the best candidate we could come up with was a leftover from past Presidential primaries....

Hm. I like McCain's (former, I think) immigration policy. For that matter, I like Bush's.

Obama does not sufficiently support nuclear energy, and his support of ethanol and clean coal are obvious political panders. I have the audacity to hope that his views on nuclear energy are also political panders, and that he does nothing with ethanol and clean coal, instead diverting resources to stuff a bit more promising.

Biden says stupid things often, and is thoroughly in the pocket of the banking industry. I know less about Biden than Obama however, and believe he's got a few other things I don't so much care for.

Despite his gifts for oration, Obama does indeed need several more years of experience in national politics. And though I don't think it is negative per se, Obama does come across somewhat like a professor instead of someone who provides straight answers.

well...McCain is a politician...which simply means that he will say what is needed to get votes, although i believe he is a closet pro-conservative (look at his voting record)...

he still is a politician and i believe that the end doesn't justify the means.

I don't like Obama's position on abortion, and I think he's going to increase spending.

We need to pay down the $9.6 Trillion debt that is accruing interest at a rate of roughly $450 Billion/year.

McCain has stated that he now supports the opinion of securing the border first but his actions and recent statements makes me doubt.

He supports Cap and Trade.

He still doesn't support drilling in ANWR.

McCain's record on immigration (McCain/Kennedy), the McCain/Feingold campaign reform, his unwillingness to drill in ANWR, and except for military issues, he doesn't seem to have the fire in his belly to stand up against opposition. He seems too willing to compromise.

In spite of that, I've got to hold my nose and vote for him in November because the alternative is simply not an option.

I agree with Dave, especially about holding my nose part, but B. Hussein Obama is really scary. The part about Obama that bothers me most and forces this decision on me; is the missing years when Obama was living in New York, and cannot remember who his roomates were, where he lived, who he associate with etc.

So I will hold my nose and vote McCain.

Jack has once again hit the nail on the head.

And it wasn't an immigration "debate", it was a debacle.

My guy is eight years late to the party. He is unlikely to be able to serve two terms. He is known for being hot-headed at times. His domestic policy is No Lobbyist Left Behind.

1. I've yet to see Obama realistically talk about addressing the national debt (although neither candidate has done this)
2. I wish he'd come out and support gay marriage on the record, rather than doing the usual democrat waffling on the issue.
3. I second the nuclear energy thing. I've always thought nuclear is the best and cleanest solution to energy problems.
4. I wish he'd hold firm against off shore drilling.
