Brangelina most talented duo?
I think Pitt has talent, but I'm not familiar with Jolie outside her action roles, which always seem too cliche and not nuanced enough...
What defining roles has Jolie had?

well, she did win an oscar for her role in girl, interrupted. also, her portrayal of gia was also met with critical raves. i think she was pretty good in the good shepherd as well as in that 'smith' movie. both her and brad definitely were sending up their celebrity. she was also very good in a mighty heart. admittedly, not everything she does is a heavy dramatic role but she is pretty consistent, even when the movie is only "entertaining". regardless, the fact that she does drama, comedy and (fluffy) action movies is actually a good thing, i think.

actually, i believe i stated that i think forest whitaker is over-rated. i found mcavoy far more compelling in the last king of scotland. don't get me wrong - whitaker's portrayal of idi amin was big, but i found it a little too ham-fisted. then again, i'm not really a fan of whitaker's work.

besides, "most talented" doesn't necessarily mean 'best choices' of roles...  tomb raider may have been cliche and cheesy, but she was entertaining - the best thing about those 2 movies, in fact. those were big, dumb, adolescent fantasy movies. i'd rather watch her than charlize theron or milla jovovich...

sorry, typo... I was referring to whittaker in the last post., about whittaker all through it... soz.
I would rather not watch any of those 3 actresses. Seriously, they are only in the industry coz of their looks. Same with jolie. She is not nearly as talented as say... the KCates or the older genration (JUDI DENCH OMGOSH!!!)

I have to vote for DeNiro for most talented male actor. His roles over the years have run the gamut from absolutely terrifying (Cape Fear) to totally hysterical (Meet the Fockers, Midnight Run). One role that really stuck in mind was in a film where he played a slightly off center Viet Nam vet who falls for and courts his buddy's sister. I can't remember the name of the movie, though. 
It's harder to pick one woman to call the best. Jodie Foster has had a long and outstanding career. So has Meryl Streep. But they both seem to gravitate to very serious roles. There's very little comedy in either one's resume. I'm kinda leaning towards Julia Roberts.

If Russel Crowe churns out a good performance in the latest movie, Body of Lies, with DiCaprio, then I am putting him number one on my all-time list. 
He's already number one, but this would put it over the top for all-time with a large margin!

Male, I'd have to say a tie between Liam Neeson and Robert Duvall.
Female, Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand.

Daniel Day-Lewis is my number two -- of the living actors. He's done some really fine stuff, but In the Name of the Father is his best performance imo. For all time greats it would be a tie between Jack Lemmon and William Holden, and in that order. Jack Lemmon could do almost any type of role, and William Holden always stole the show in almost every movie he was in. I don't know which is my favorite movie, but Network is in my top 10 movies.
I also like Frances McDormand a lot and Renee Zellweger is pretty darn good. All time great (behind Streep) would be Jane Fonda although she's not been in very good roles the last decade or so. BTW, I just love Kathy Bates.

Tough choices.
For the men it would probably be Donald Sutherland. Close runners up: Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and Nicholas Cage. They all can be almost anyone.
Tom Hanks only plays one character and only did that well before he went off his meds....
I guess my vote for actress would be Susan Sarandon. Streep would be a close 2nd.

Most talented males are Will Smith and Alan Rachins. Jamie Fox was awesome in Ray, but we'll see if he can keep it up.
Female is a tougher call. I will say that Jodie Foster is WAY over-rated, and it seems Meryl Streep has built an entire reputation off of one movie 30 years ago (Sophie's choice). Cate Blanchett was truly great in The Aviator, so I'll give her the nod.

off the top of my head someone I didn't see in the list was Joaquin Phoenix. I really liked him as Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line". He did a great job as a phycho in Gladiator.

I think Joaquin is on his way to becoming one of the very best actors. I have thought he was really good since I saw him in Parenthood when he was a kid.

I'm a big fan of Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro, and Dennis Quaid. If they're in it, I'll most likely watch it.
Kate Blanchett, Alfre Woodard, and Cathy Bates for actress.

I like Anne Hathaway, mostly because I loved the Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted! (I'm a totally softie for that type of movie!)
As far as guys, I don't know, that one is tougher, but I really like Dale Midkiff and Logan Bartholomew because they always make their characters so believable! I thought they both did a really nice job in The Love Comes Softly Series based on the books by Janette Oke.

Have you seen her in Becoming Jane? She was very good, but the chemistry between her and McAvoy (who plays Tom LeFroy) is excellent.

Soooo tough to pick just one actor! Johnny Depp comes in first for me. He is a total chameleon! Russell Crowe a definate runner up.
As for actress: Hands down, Meryl Streep. Another chameleon.

Paul Newman, who is no longer with us  , Ruby Dee, who was recently in "American Gangster," Sean Connery, Robert Duvall--and these and other old school actors who can give the young'ens a run for their money.
Now to the new crowd--Kathy Bates, Denzel Washington, Russel Crowe, Angela Bassett, (anything with her and Lawence Fishburn Jr. is good), Meryl Streep, so many others that I'm gonna mention later....

I'd give Will the nod after ONE more amazing drama piece or a performance as a convincing bad guy.
I just saw "Nim's Island" and thought she was pretty bad. She was bad in "Maverick" and the one with the daughter dissapearing on the plane, whatever it was called. You can just tell she's ACTING.
