A Gaither video showed Randy Owen singing a song called "One Big Heaven". The song is about how there is one big Heaven for everybody no matter who you are--a Rabbi, Catholic, Pentecostal, Baptist, whatever. I believe that if a person accepts Jesus as their Saviour, they will go to Heaven, no matter what their religious tag is, but the songs implies that all faiths will go to Heaven; it leaves out that vital and only step to salvation--you must trust Christ as your Saviour. Shouldn't a major focus of Southern Gospel music be leading people to the Lord? Hasn't it always been that way? Is it changing now? What do you guys think about this?

I agree with you that anyone who accepts Christ as their Savior will go to Heaven. I also agree that one of the goals (among others) of SG music should be to lead people to Christ. I haven't noticed any change in this over the years. As to the song, I suggest that we give the writer a little artistic license. Not every gospel song has to set out the requirements of salvation. In fact, most of them don't.

What Kerr said. And I'll add I will have to live between the Baptist community and the Pentecostal community because I am a Bapticostal.[:D] Seriously there is only one Heaven. How big or small I don't know but it will be grand. And we will all go to the same Heaven assuming we are all saved. There will be no division by denomination.

That's right , it don't matter what denomination you are, are what backround you are, as long as you trust Christ as you Saviour, that's what matters.

Don't recall seeing Randy perform that song. But I have yet to see a Gaither Video that didn't expound Salvation's Plan before it was over.

I haven't heard this song. I will make it a point to find it and listen to it. I'm a HUGE Randy Owen fan!! Any song with Randy in it pretty much guarantees that I'm gonna like it!![:D]

Don't really know about the song in question, but this AM, I heard one of the bluegrass groups singing (on the NEW Gaither bluegrass videos) a song where the hook line was something to the effect 'just so it assures me a place at Calvary..." But, in context, of the song, it was referring to 'heaven'. That one kinda went over my head... I got to trying to think a little deeper about the meaning of what they were singing, and I 'kinda' think I get it. Maybe they are saying they are so unworthy that they just 'metaphorically' want to be able to find a place of redemption and salvation at 'Calvary', so they can go to Heaven? I'm pretty sure I heard The Statlers sing this one a while back, too. Kinda made me go... 'Hmmm..." then... Well, kinda... It was just kinda awkward to listen to...

I am "Church of God" (penticostal), and I know a lot of born again christians (who are probably closer to God than myself, if the truth be known) that would never feel comfortable around all of our jumpin' and shoutin'. And on the other hand, I know plenty of others who wouldn't feel comfortable in a more traditional type of worship atmosphere. The problem is when one of them (and mine is usually one of the worst for this) begins to feel as if they are the only ship "afloat". The bickering between denominations I could really do without. However, the fact that we are divided into them, in my opinion, is probably something that most christians as a whole couldn't do without. But to stay on topic, I don't think that "denominational" references were what seemed questionable to the original poster. I think it was probably the "religious" references. It's easy to say that all christian denominations are filled with saved individuals (I don't think any of us would dissagree with that). But when you start taking on other religions, with their altered views of "God", "heaven" and the "Bible"... I can see where that argument could lose a little of its luster.

I understand what you are saying and respect that, but that is the reason I don't like demoninational barriers. Why should born again Christians not feel comfortable worshipping together? I understand it comes down to human nature and associating with individuals who hold the same views as we do. I guess I am more of an 'against the grain' type person. I like to experience it all and associate with as many people as I can. [:D]

But I just know that there are many christians out there would think I was a little loud and boisterous during worship (and they'd probably be right!! LOL).

I wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I think if you guys should watch the video of this song. If you have already, watch it again. It is pretty clear that the song is implying that Muslims and Jews will be in Heaven. The premise is the Oprah-inspired universalist religion that is sweeping through the world. Apparently, by Gloria's involvment with the guy that wrote the universalist book, "The Shack", the Gaithers believe this as well. It's sad that in Gospel music there are people who would actually compromise the faith, and proclaim that jews and muslims will be in heaven. Well, I say unless they Believe upon Christ Jesus, they won't be there. But anyway, Does it seem that the southern gospel quartets aren't nearly as involved with the Gaithers as they used to be? I don't see very much Gaither stuff, except when it's on tv, but it seems like there used to be lots of quartets that would all be there. I remember the Kingsmen, Gold City and others that used to frequent the shows, and don't recall seeing them as much now.

[:D][:D][:D] The above quote is really funny!! I travel all over the world with my job and attend church services wherever I go. Realize people that we live in a GLOBAL world with GLOBAL christians. We tend to reduce God to our western way of thinking ("denominations") and forget that he is as real to the people who live in Moscow, Russia where I was last week, as He is to the people in Cleveland, TN or anywhere else for that matter. If my church was so narrow in it's focus as to think they had the "only ship afloat", I'd jump overboard immediately. [:D] Also to the poster who spoke out against the Gaither's and The Shack, be warned. Them Gaither's are highly thought of 'round these parts. Better be careful. I have to listen to the song that the OP mentioned. I'm sure if it were inappropriate, Bill would not have allowed it on the vid. One last note from me. I read a book several years back, Transported By the Lion of Judah, that forever changed my life. It has to do with how God sees the Muslims and all the people who have never trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior. I highly recommend it.
