James 3:8

"but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison."

There are so many verses about talking too much, saying the wrong thing. This verse gives the tongue its own animation.

Throwing out another question of the tongue...is there a time when not speaking is sinful?

This is a very, very good point. However, going back to the OP - although it is right to speak the truth (in love) and not remain silent, there comes a point where you have to use wisdom and know when to refrain in any given conversation where a point is trying to be made to no avail. The old saying, "you can win an argument but lose a friend" comes to mind; also, the Word of God tells us that, "It is foolishness to cast your pearls before the swine" and what do swine do but trample things in the mud. We don't want to see God's Word trampled in the mud (spiritually speaking).

When it comes to soul-winning especially, we need to know when to start and when to stop speaking and when to leave the Holy Spirit to work through His Word because He says, "My Word will not return to me void but will accomplish that to which it is sent." (Isaiah). If we are relying on the Holy Spirit, we will not determine to prove a point (like a dog that doesn't want to let go of a bone) but leave the Holy Spirit to do His job. It's a matter of trusting the Holy Spirit also.
