Everything in our lives should glorify God. I simply cannot see how drinking alcohol, even in moderation, can do that.

Maybe not, but then again, you've haven't seen and done everything. You probably don't know how every culture is and how people do things differently than you do.

I bet if I took you on my "mission field" for a day or two it just might open you up to seeing that there are things outside your "norm." Like, a "C.S. Lewis Society" meeting, where a bunch of us guys get together at the local pub and discuss theology, God, etc. over a few beers and cigars. Not all of them are total believers... YET. Nobody gets drunk or anything like that.
What does culture have to do with glorifying God? We glorify God by obeying His word. His word does not change with cultures.

Do you, personally, consider eating potato chips sinful?

Do you personally consider potato chips to be equally as harmful as smoke?

Do you personally consider potato chips addicting? I know they say you can't eat just one, but...

When taken in excess, yes.

Maybe not in a physical, medical sense. But I know that some people are certainly addicted to them. And if not potato chips, than some other unhealthy food, be it ice cream, cheesecake, Big Macs, etc. Or perhaps that infamous legalized stimulant, coffee. Obviously (to me, at least), none of these are inherently sinful in and of themselves, but taken in excess, they can be very detrimental to one's health.

And that is the case where the statement of Paul's that not everything is edifying. We should be doing what's edifying.

Does alcohol edify? Do cigarettes? I can't see it, but I don't like either one, so I'm biased.

It's about being able to communicate with people effectively in a way they can understand.

So what does alcohol have to do with communicating with people? That seems way too close to compromise IMHO...

I can't speak towards cigarettes, having never smoked one. However, I find sharing a beer with friends can be a very edifying experience. As can enjoying a bowl of fine leaf in one's pipe.

In that case, please define edify...

ArmyDude, it sure sounds like you are fighting the same argument I was in the bringing the bar into church thread, especially using the verse, "all things are lawful, but not all things are profitable, not all things edify". (paraphrased of course).

Well like I said, I'm biased. I put down alcohol six years ago after a friend was in a DWI accident and killed.

There must something to it since Christ himself partook and the fact the bible speaks against drunkenness not drinking...

At the risk of confusing the issue: any significance in the fact that Christ's first miracle was turning water into wine?
