I'm getting Dish Network installed next weekend (mostly for ESPN to watch college football). It's been about 7 years since I've had any kind of major cable, so I've only been watching NBC & Fox (some ABC, but not much). Wanted to get your thoughts on great viewing from the other networks I'll be getting. I only got the 100 channel, so I didn't get everything, but that's okay. I really don't like that I'm not getting Discovery Health, but I won't pay the extra money just for one channel. What do ya'll enjoy most on cable & why? k

I watch:

Food Network
A&E (some good programming but some depressing stuff) Intervention , some biographies. New drama the cleaner is pretty good.
E! (sometimes I watch the gossip stuff, and the Soup). They also have rights to the Saturday Night Live collection.
Sci Fi - ghost hunters cracks me up
Discovery
Travel Channel - No reservations is real good
USA- Only if you like Law and Order cause that's pretty much what they play 90% of the time. Monk isn't bad.
Sometimes HGTV.
Sometimes TLC, usually What not to Wear.

Then of course news channels like CNN or MSNBC aren't bad.

Discovery Health was great but it got sold to oprah's company so I don't know if they changed it.

I don't get animal planet or bravo, but I am not paying ten dollars more for those channels. Although Top Chef is pretty good.

I don't know for sure what you get in the 100-channel pack, but I'll tell you what we're watching on the networks available on cable/DISH/DirectTV/FIOS/etc...

USA - Monk, Psych, and Burn Notice
ABC Family - Middleman
TLC - Jon and Kate Plus Eight, Little People Big World
BBC America - repeats of Doctor Who (new series, not classic series)
Bravo - Project Runway
TNT - The Closer
SciFi - When they're on, Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who (neither will be on for a while)
CNN Headline News (which is more conservative than CNN) Nancy Grace, Glenn Beck
Fox News - Shepherd Smith, Gretta Van Sustren, occasionally Bill O'Riley
CNN - mainly just special series, rarely Larry King
History Channel - whatever is of interest
Animal Planet - Dog Whisperer, dog shows
For music videos - Gospel Music Channel, MTV-U

Do you have AMC, FoxMovies, IFC, Sundance, anything like that?

I assume you have the digital music channels (maybe Music Choice?) They are very nice, especially if you have stereo speakers hooked in.

Does DirectTV have onDemand now? Whatever we can see onDemand we generally do (we had onDemand with Comcast and now have it with FIOS)...because commercials are limited or the shows are commercial free!

Are you getting the box that includes DVR? I was a very slow convert to DVRs. We have a DVD recorder, but now that we have a DVR I only "offload" to DVD the things that we want to watch again later. DVRs are so easy to set up and schedule, and most of the boxes now have dual tuners so you can record two shows at once, or watch one network and record another.

The Discovery and Science channel is the only stations anyone needs.

Oh, and the NFL Network. [;)]
