I don't understand why a person with a 4 month old would buy a truck instead of a car in the first place. Doesn't make sense to me.

We just don't know her situation. That might have been her only or best option when she was ready or forced to have to buy a vehicle. We just don't know...

She did not say it was new; possible someone gave them a good deal? I used to wonder why my parents bought a VW Bug with 5 kids! Turns out it was to be my older brother's car but the family car died, dad got hurt and couldn't work and they couldn't afford anything else. My daughter's friends mom drives an old Nissan truck because when her hubby left someone sold it to her cheap just to get them from a to b because her new SUV had to go back to the dealership (she couldn't feed her kids and pay the payment). There are a lot of unknowns...

ORIGINAL: MC4JC With the price of gas, even the SUV would not be a good buy! I would not put a baby in the front seat of a car or a truck. And I'm not sure, but I think it would be illegal now to disconnect any airbag. I'd sell the truck and get a better vehicle. I spend about 80 bucks every 2 weeks for gas...it's big, it's reliable, it's safe...insurance is only about 60 bucks a month for full coverage. AND...both my girls are safely in the back seat. You must not drive a lot. I have a PT Cruiser and spend around $45 a week on a low driving week. Of course my kids go to school 20 minutes away and I work... I drive roughly 35 miles a day round trips from my home to the babysitter's to work (in the opposite direction) but, any and all shopping is within 2 miles of my front door. I usually go on my way home from work, just to avoid going out again. (I live just off the "main drag" of our city). NDY

Q7: Can I have a cut-off switch installed in my car? A: A few new vehicles have factory installed cut-off switches for the passenger side air bag. This is allowed only in new vehicles that have no rear seat position or a rear seat that is too small for a rear-facing infant seat. Cut-off switches may be installed by dealers or repair shops for a passenger air bag in older vehicles that have no rear seat position or a rear seat that is too small for a rear facing infant seat. However, cut-off switches cannot currently be installed in any other older vehicles. FROM HERE. quote:

When my almost 23 year old son was a baby we had only a pick-up truck. My ex needed the truck for work and there was no money to buy a second car.

Ok you guys have a point, the OP didn't really clarify the entire story but seems to me that even if someone gave them the truck, they would have known about the baby. Maybe she will clarify it a bit more on the circumstances of why she has a truck instead of a car. But she did say she BOUGHT a truck. Surely the price they paid (whatever it is) they could have found a car instead.

Surely the price they paid (whatever it is) they could have found a car instead. It's possible someone sold her a truck for only $3oo-400. Often someone might have a vehicle that they will sell real cheap to someone they know who is in need. There is no way they could have bought a vehicle for the same price from a stranger. ie. I bought a van from my dad for $500. It has run for more than 18 months. I had some problems this spring but they seem to be over now. I wish I had a smaller vehicle that didn't use as much gas but I never could have found a car that I knew worked and knew the history of for that price

Standingstrong, if you can find the side air bag censor, smack it with a bat to make them deploy. Then you can shove them back in. It is illegal to drive the car with the airbags hanging out. I'm not certain, but there may be another step to making the car start back up after the airbag is deployed. Do you have a friend who is a mechanic? You can deploy the airbags yourself and then have the mechanic make the car run again.

Mrs. X it is a lot easier to just find the fuse box and pull the ones that work the airbag. That is what my mechanic friend told me to do.

Ok, would you all think its any safer to put the car seat on the FLOOR of the truck rather then in the seat. I'm thinking it just might be a little safer there. What is the opinion?

Don't bite me Donna. I didn't know - was thinking it would be away from the airbags - that's all. I do like your idea - maybe there is someone in her church that might be willing to trade vehicles - truck for a car.

ORIGINAL: PrincessDonna You cannot be serious. Are you aware what happens to the floor of any vehicle in a front-end collision? It basically disappears. I've been in a position where what we had to drive was what we had...there was no money for anything else. I would put a rear-facing baby in the front seat of a truck if I was able to disable the airbag(s), but not if I couldn't. If I couldn't disable them, I would not bring the baby anywhere. Period. And I would look for help with getting a more suitable vehicle, even if I couldn't afford it on my own. Have you thought about asking your church? I completely agree. There have been years when we didn't have a vehicle (or family around to help...we are military). We had to rely on friends to get us to the hospital with our 3rd when I went into labor (in Germany, in a snow storm two days after Christmas, when the closest military hospital was a 45 min drive on the autobahn in good weather). We didn't have a vehicle for several years actually, the one year there was the last time we went through that hurdle. For over a year my hubby walked 8 miles one way to and from work every day because we didn't have a vehicle. Someone did give him a bike, so that helped some after that. For years we would walk to the grocery store and catch a taxi back home (we would figure the taxi ride cost into our grocery budget). When we had been in Germany a year, one day a lady from our church knocked on our door (happened to be on my birthday). She said they had bought a newer van for their family, and while what she was offering wasn't in the best condition they still wanted to bless us by giving us their older van. That van got us through in Germany...it died last year (transmission went out) so we recently sold it for scrap. When hubby re-up'd while he was deployed he got a large bonus and we were able to pay cash for a new "used" van for our family, so it is great to have that now...big enough and no mechanical problems like every other vehicle we have ever had (you know the old saying, a mechanic's car never runs...lol). Anyway, I am not sure if that was totally on topic for here, but I did feel like sharing that. God has blessed us many times through the years, even if the blessing wasn't what we would pick out ourselves.

By the way, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT safe to put a forward facing child seat in the front seat of a vehicle with airbags...ALL children should ride in the rear seat. The safest position is middle-rear.

It isn't any safer for them to be rear-facing, though, than to be forward-facing, if an airbag deploys. It's also not safe to have a child out of a carseat but not yet near-adult-sized in a seat with an airbag. To give you an idea, an airbag goes off with the force of a double-barrell shotgun. If you set one on the ground (and they are not light) and it goes off, it will jump YARDS into the air. They are extremely powerful...people who are in accidents with airbag deployment usually incur injuries from the airbag...it's just that they are less severe than injuries from the dash, windshield or steering wheel. Once they put a crash-test dummy's feet up on the dashboard (I USED TO love to ride this way) and when the airbag went off, it's knee went completely through it's skull.

My husband was in an accident where the front end of his car was smashed in...he had no other injuries other than what happened when the airbag deployed... The OP might want to check local laws...here in VA I believe it is illegal for a child under the age of 12 to ride in a front seat of an airbag equipped vehicle. There's a website that gives the car seat/child restraint laws for each state. NDY
